If you knew it was a bootleg when you bought it, that's one thing, but if you paid some exorbitant price for it because the seller was advertising it as OOP, then you got ripped off.

the activities department at my job was clearing house of its vhs tapes and i snagged a few.
i pretty much stopped with vhs last year (like 10 years later than most) but i couldn't help grabbing a couple

I grabbed Men in Black and Independence Day as the boxart on the ones I'd watched repeatedly as a kid were pretty beat up
also dr. strangelove cuz the box art was awesome
a retrospective tape of the blue jays world series win eons ago for my dad
and 2 movies I haven't seen but looked interesting: melvin and howard and the boys from brazil

oh and i bought the complete series of frasier last week too

Sweet. Arrived one day early as well compared to the previous crappy seller (who didn't send it to me at all). Gonna enjoy this!

Curb Your Enthusiasm's sets are generously cheap on Amazon so in preparation for tonight's season 9 premiere, I scooped the last 4 remaining seasons that I was missing and watched the entire series over again for a second time. Looks like my brief HBO subscription (through the Playstation Vue app) is going to be put to good use as I watch David Simon and George Pelecanos' The Deuce on Sundays at 9 pm, followed by a new Curb airing directly after. Can't wait to see what season 9 has to offer.

EDIT: So...how does everyone else upload embedded images these days? I used to use photobucket but now they want me to pay.

The worn edges are neat. Are they naturally formed or part of the box art?

You're BoJack Horseman, no cure for that.

pretty awesome lineup from criterion announced today:

some nice surprises! will eventually pick up the scorsese film (i assumed they'd get to after hours before this, but no bother), as well as king of jazz, which i've only read about in gary giddins' bing crosby book. seems to be right up my alley. looks like giddins is doing an intro and commentary for this release, so i'm very excited about that. i'd be all over dreyer's masterpiece too, but i already have eureka's oop 2012 release and it's definitive enough for me (steelbook + 100-page softbound book in a handsome slipcase). what a cover, though!

here we go, top ten releases of 2017 in alphabetical order:

    - buster keaton: three films (eureka)
    - his girl friday (criterion)
    - the long, hot summer (twilight time)
    - mildred pierce (criterion)
    - mullholland dr. (studiocanal uk)
    - ocean waves (universal)
    - peyton place (twilight time)
    - the thing: remastered special edition (arrow uk)
    - twin peaks: a limited event series (cbs/paramount)
    - the violent years (agfa/something weird)

2017 was another great year for collecting classic films, thanks to some amazing boutique labels.

i'm still holding out hope that hbo releases six feet under on blu, and that we see it sooner rather than later. that's like a holy grail release for me at this point.

That Keaton set looks great! Plus it has probably my 3 fav films of his. How's the booklet that comes with it?

honestly, it's not as nice as their booklets usually are. i generally prefer the essays/writings that they select over criterion's, but there's fairly minimal text here and the archival photographs supplied by the keaton family are sized a bit too small. still nice to have and flip through, though. the books that eureka included with their early murnau and keaton short films box sets are far more comprehensive.

the new 4k restorations are incredible. these discs blow the 2010 kino blu-rays out of the water (although kino set the bar pretty low).

Damn, I want that Keaton set now. Those three are also among my favorites (The General tops it, although I love Seven Chances at second), and watching them restored would be incredible.

I unfortunately gave up on the Six Feet Under blu ray and got the complete series dvd set as a Christmas present. I probably should have waited, but I really want to watch it for a second time already. I just started watching the Twin Peaks limited event series blu ray set. I feel discouraged to post in here these days because I can't post pictures correctly, but here's another complete list of my TV collection. New stuff over the past year are bolded.

    Better Call Saul seasons 1-2
    Bob's Burgers season 1
    Breaking Bad seasons 1-5 (5a and 5b)
    Curb Your Enthusiasm seasons 1-8
    Deadwood seasons 1-3
    Dexter seasons 1-8
    Everybody Loves Raymond seasons 1-9
    Fringe seasons 1-5
Futurama seasons 1-7 (all volumes and movies)
King of the Hill season 1
    Lost seasons 1-6
    Louie seasons 1-5
    Mad Men seasons 1-7 (7a and 7b)
Malcolm in the Middle season 1
    The Office (US) seasons 1-9
Parks and Recreation seasons 1-4, 7
    Rectify season 1
    Scrubs seasons 1-8
    Seinfeld seasons 1-9
    The Simpsons seasons 1-18
    Six Feet Under seasons 1-5
    The Sopranos seasons 1-6 (6a and 6b)
Twin Peaks seasons 1-2, limited event series
    The Wire seasons 1-5

It's time to get into another classic actor, so I got this today.
It's a set of 7 assorted John Wayne features, both well-regarded and more obscure ones.

    Rio Grande
The third in John Ford's unofficial cavalry trilogy. This looks pretty good. I don't know quite what to expect yet, since I haven't seen anything from John Ford either. This is arguably one of the most professionally produced of the bunch.

    The Conqueror
Oh man... The infamous movie where John Ford plays Djingis Khan. This should be... quite something.

    The Barbarian And The Geisha

A bit of an obscure one, which explores the cultural differences between the US and Japan in 1858. Wayne also attracts the love of a geisha, but primarily this is a lowkey war drama.

    North To Alaska

The first of two comedies on the box. This was higher rated than I expected. Karl Swenson from Little House On The Prairie has a role.

    McLintock!

Now we're really talking! This is one of John Wayne's most wellknown comedies. And it looks like a lot of fun, maybe something in the line with It Happened One Night.

    Circus World

    A circus romp. Huh.

    Hellfighters

Finally we close it off with Wayne kicking fires' ass.

wow, it seemed like nothing was going to top indicator's boetticher and fuller box sets in 2018. sold off my bergman stuff last year in preparation for something like this, but i never imagined something so extensive. this has to be one of the greatest all-time releases.
