    Lion King (2019)

Have not seen the 1994 film in two decades (hyuck), but of course I was just imagining throughout the whole film how much better this would be with 2D animation. The CGI animals are impressively made, just not appropriate for this story, retelling with realistic animals that can’t really express and look similar to each other, a lot of grey and brown backgrounds that are boring to look at.

Besides the animation and being (I assume) mostly a complete retread of the 1994 film, the plot is competently told and the songs are still catchy to listen to. Well except whatever they did to Be Prepared. The idea of turning the song into a serious speech/march I didn’t mind, that could’ve been cool if they actually kept the songs full length. Instead we get a really short song (kind of) that starts and ends awkwardly.

Voice acting seemed solid. James Earl Jones had a little old age rasp to him, but was ignorable enough that he still does well as Mufasa.

Perfectly fine if you have to watch, but afaik there is no reason to watch over the original.

Good film to start 2020 with.
Just because I'm stupider than them, they think they're smarter than me!
