Its based on a book and looks generic.

I saw it and was okay. Nothing too crazy. It's just the usual "quirky" American indy film. The only cool parts are the films they made.

"As bad as some are saying"? I've heard nothing but praise for it!

it's just a really good genre picture. friedkin is great at getting tension out of those long scenes of the cops following their target. there isn't necessarily a lot going on in those scenes, but his staging and camerawork is so magnificent and seamless you become immersed in it. and you can't talk about the french connection without mentioning the car/train chase, which was as great as it's reputation. i guess the only complaint i have is that gene hackman's character felt really underdeveloped. they were trying to make him this sort of sleazy, anti-hero type but i never really believed it or cared, and we're living in the age of the television anti-hero and it's been done better a million times since the movie was made so it just came off as lame. didn't really bother me much though, it's really more of a nitpick.

i liked it okay. i would imagine it's one of the better high school comedies out there, although i haven't seen a lot of the really shitty ones so i can't say for sure. it definitely feels like a perfect mid-90s time capsule and i almost feel like it knows it. it was cool seeing paul rudd when he was younger, and he was still the most goddamn pleasant human being on the face of the earth even then. i liked seeing dan hedaya, wallace shawn, that dude from scrubs, and billy from six feet under, and alicia silverstone really surprised me and i thought she was pretty much perfect in her role. i chuckled a few times and i do think it grasps the dynamics of high school better than most movies i've seen, but i can't say it was ever more than mildly entertaining.

from what I've read apparently Gene Hackman kept nagging Friedkin for more insight and depth into the character and Friedkin would just stonewall him and say he's doing fine
Also Eddie Egan who Doyle was based on was quite simple and one minded in his personality and his job so the lack of depth may have just been trying to mirror the reality of a man who seemingly had little to begin with

in an era where television antiheroes are given so much to work with I could see how Doyle could seem kinda thin in that area

My summer movie winners are Age of Ultron (saw it 5x) & Mad Max: Fury Road (saw 6x)
Now that Jurassic World (3x) is finally showing at the discount cinema I can see it a few more times on theater screen before it disappears forever to DVD
