Ironically, despite not caring about Solo at all during its production, I think I'd have a lot of fun with it simply because from what I understand it's a nice self-contained story without the stakes being the universe (as they usually are). Still, I'm not seeing it until they put it on Netflix.

As an aside, would there be enough interest if I were to make a Star Trek thread?

@korusan, I'd be one of those interested in an Star Trek general thread. Go ahead and make one if you'd like to(I've actually been thinking of making one myself but never got to it).

One box office disappointment and all aside from the saga films are shelved. Ouch.

Good. Solo wasn't even out yet and they were already talking about like, a billion sequels that no one wanted

Yeah I haven't even seen the spin offs that are out yet and I'm already overwhelmed at the idea of the milking of spin offs for characters that, while I like them, I really don't need to know more.

I finally got around to watching The Last Jedi. I don't get the scathing reception this has gotten from a sizeable chunk of SW fans. It was an enjoyable movie. I liked how the movie tried some new stuff and new angles instead of just rehashing an older movie. My major complaint is that the end really drags for a while. 2 hours in, and you'd think that the movie is going to end because it feels like that. But no, the movie keeps on going and then it finally ends after 30 unnecessary minutes.

The movie is overall a 7.5/10.
Simpsons Season 30 Ratings: Bart's Not Dead: 3/5(B-) Heartbreak Hotel: N/A My Way or the Highway to Heaven: 3.5/5(B) THOH XXIX: 2.5/5(C+) Baby You Can't Drive My Car: 3.25/5(B/B-) From Russia with Love: 4/5(B+) Werking Mom: 3.5/5(B) Krusty the Clown: 3.5/5(B) Daddicus Finch: 5/5(A) Mad About the Toy: 3.5/5(B)

Yeah, I watched it again last night and...

@mods please remove my vote so I can change it to TLJ. The movie has a few flaws here and there but its execution and subversion of any predictability is brilliant, and Kylo Ren is easily the best Star Wars villain. Bite me, fanboys

I have rewatched TLJ as well a few days ago and I still like it. I too appreciated that they did a lot of new things and deviated from what was expected and all of that makes me look forward to the next part even more (don't get those who say it completely killed their interest in future SW; if anything a movie like this should make one even more excited for the continuation/conclusion).

It's not perfect as I does have a few minor issues with it and the biggest (and only real one) is that it does feel overlong and overstuffed and has some pacing issues; I think they could have trimmed it down here and there to give it a better length.

So at the ongoing San Diego Comic Con this trailer was screened today.

I guess it's back for an encore. I like that a lot.

I Love Star Wars, one of my favorite franchises ever, when it comes to the movies, I love both the Originals and Prequels, Not really a fan of the Disney stuff, I kinda enjoyed Force awakens and Solo, but Rouge One, and last Jedi, were awful.

I’m actually surprised people in this thread actually enjoyed Last Jedi (probably even prefer it to the Prequels), when practically no one else did, but you can like what you like, I did actually liked the Casino planet setting, atmosphere, and music, but the Plot, no way.

Seems like the Episode IX trailer is scheduled for tomorrow Friday as part of the Star Wars Celebration convention's (back after a two year hiatus) Ep IX panel. Looking forward to see a glimpse of how the last episode of the main saga will look like and hopefully I'll be able to catch it on the live stream like the Ep VIII (Last Jedi) trailer (and hopefully some other neat stuff they have planned).

Speaking of the theatrical movies, how would you guys rank them? It's been a while since the last time we ranked them.

My approximate list from the top of my head (also warning for some surprises; I wouldn't say anyone of the movies are bad, well, except for the bottom one which isn't all that good).

    Empire Strikes Back
    Return Of The Jedi
    New Hope
    Phantom Menace/Force Awakens
    Revenge Of The Sith
    Rogue One
    Last Jedi
    Attack Of The Clones
    Solo
    Clone Wars Movie

Have been watching the Episode IX panel of Star Wars Celebration and the teaser trailer premiered at the end as expected:

A very good and interesting one, I must say. I like the title among other things.

I think the most intriguing part of the trailer was the last shot before the title reveal  with the Death Star wreckage on the coastline followed by a dark screen with the emperors laugh (which makes me guess that he'll be involved somehow) . That certainly increased the hype.

I'm interested by that trailer. I wonder how this movie will answer to the whole message about "learning from the past" of The Last Jedi.

By the way, Rian Johnson's tweet about the trailer is wonderful, I love this guy. And since he seems to not complain about anything, even the shots that left to some fans the feeling of retcon, I'm less worry about it, I really want that this new Star Wars follows the themes of The Last Jedi and that seems to be possible, much to my delight (because I'm a part of those who think The Last Jedi is an excellent Star Wars and who love its themes).

@Wile E. the Brain, I suppose you mean this tweet, which I like too. Figured he'd be pretty excited.

    https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/04...-first-trailer

I too hope they'll continue from what they have and doesn't do too much retcon and much "damage control" (seems that term pops up a lot concerning the upcoming movie nowadays). The Last Jedi, which is a really good film with a lot to like (everything with Rey and Luke on Ach-To was great, for instance), made some surprising and interesting moves and introduced a lot of intriguing stuff and made me wonder where they will take the story next; I don't get all of those who say the film killed all their interest in the series going forward (and even the franchise) when I found it to be a perfect example of a film that really makes you wonder about and long for the next one to see where it all goes.

Speaking of wonderful things, I dunno if you guys saw the IX panel but it was pretty heartwarming that when Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico ) entered the stage the crowd kept cheering on her and chanted her name, a pretty obvious response to the horrific bullying she suffered last year on social media by those toxic fans (I remember when I saw the film in theater I enjoyed her character and then I was taken aback when I saw the online hate towards not only the character but also the actress). It's great to see her get a lot of support.

Me neither, I think I'll never get the hate toward The Last Jedi. It had some of the most interesting stuff in Star Wars since years in my opinion.

That was one of the first things I thinked about when I saw her on stage during the panel. It was such a relief to see her as enthusiastic and the crowd so supporting toward her after all the awful cyberbullying she was victim of and that she didn't deserved at all (even if I wasn't a huge fan of her character, I liked her and she didn't do anything to be such a punching bag for the toxic fans). That warmed my heart to see her get a lot of support by the fans at the convention, too.

Trailer did nothing for me. The title and hint at Palpatine just makes me think they're about to put out some bad ideas

The Last Jedi was fantastic. Lot of humor, great visuals, fun characters, poignant at times. I loved that it did away with the Who Is Snoke (why can't it just be some guy) and Who Are Rey's Parents theories (for a revelation to have any effect on a casual audience the list of candidates is very, very small). Seeing Leia use the force for the first time (onscreen at least) to save herself from the vacuum of space is a very beautiful moment and seeing it mocked and memed by "uhhh, science much???" guys upsets me. I like the interpretation I read somewhere that the sequel trilogy is basically about millennials trying to find their way in the face of resurgent fascism after baby boomers and institutions failed them. My main gripe is that the "uh oh our space ship is out of gas!" plot kinda feels like something out of a filler episode of Rebels

I liked Solo, it's fun, the actors were great, the change in directors is not obvious the way it is in Justice League. But the story is mostly checking boxes off a list (everything always lines up just a little too neatly in prequels), his name didn't fucking need an origin, and the reveal of you-know-who to set up a sequel that will never happen now was incredibly goofy (I like the cartoons but some things should just be contained to them... here's hoping nobody told JJ Abrams about the world between worlds). Overall it just feels pretty disposable

hello leia-dies and jedi-ntlemen, id like to blather about some intriguing possibilities for star wars episode ix: the rise of skywalker. my worries for the nebulous jj-helmed episode ix have been substantial following the brilliantly subversive and overarchingly important the last jedi, which i not only love for the bold questions it asks and the smart omissions it posits from the chosen bloodline way of thinking, i genuinely believe it better understands the totality of the lore and the inherent flaws of the jedi order moreso than any other film in the franchise. it used the difficult ideas the prequels observed but managed to do so without falling prey to a number of errors in performance, visual design, writing and so on and so forth. essentially: the very nature of the jedi atop a hierarchy guarantees that hierarchy will always crumble under their own weight, a hubris of man kinda thing. it echoes palpatine but turns the sights directly on our supposed greatest jedi for his own faults based on following these archaic ideas. it affirms a notion of erasing these hierarchical structures, to welcome all to face the struggle. anyone can wear the mask, as a similarly uplifting work of art of 2018 proudly asserted, and if anyone can, many will. rey is important not by name but by passion and will and heroism that need not apply a hallowed moniker to legitimize any of that. essentially, you dont have to be a Skywalker to be a hero.

so...the rise of skywalker. ominous title to be sure. let me try and offer a few scenarios where it could all be okay though! first of all i do in a vacuum enjoy seeing a star wars movie, the final in its fourty year saga no less, actually use the name skywalker front and center, but doesnt it immediately contradict the relinquishing of familial importance and chosen ones to put such value on the name? well let me try to navigate a scenario i have thought of and another i read that might could suggest otherwise, keeping in mind that i only know as much as you with concrete certainty. okay so, consider first the disparity of this title against the others, not exclusively based on the specificity of the Skywalker name's inclusion, but the implications of such a choice. think about past titles and what they evoke: a new hope, a signal of Good to triumph Evil; the empire strikes back, a signal of Evil's triumph over Good; return of the JEDI, and inversely revenge of the SITH; similar evocations with force awakens specifically pointing to rey and the last JEDI again pointing towards a single faction. however of course as with so many factors of TLJ the connotation is very different, the word jedi not reading under its context as the brave heroes but as a broken frail system that has proven itself faulty in an ongoing cycle for many years and multiple generations now. its the only title that promotes an ambiguity in its presence, dissolving some of the good vs evil to begin inquiring for balance, to cease the cycle that has built every side of this war. every side. the Skywalkers may not be the most important people in the galaxy based upon some shallow notion about bloodline, but i put it to you that they have essentially become the inheritors of the great imbalance that leaves the galaxy in such unrest. the rise of skywalker puts the name in the center of the belief system that has consecutively caused this imbalance so as to assert that their existence within this allows them an intimate understanding of how to dismantle these rules and guide to balance, to not assert light and dark, good and evil, to not assert who is worthy to hold them and know the force within. TLJ made it clear luke knows all of this too well and both rey and kylo are clearly aware of this imbalance as well. when kylo said let the past die his intentions to burn the very nature of order to the ground to erase the tug and pull in his head were irrational, but his core sentiment came from the very same place as luke's upon the devastation wrought by following the old ways, by following the ways that begat the struggle we continue to witness. something is wrong, and every skywalker is suffering the blow.

so who does the rise of skywalker refer to? well while alot of this coooould be wishful thinking i feel this is a pretty safe bet: it's kylo. ok it could be kylo and rey but it's definitely kylo. this is jj's star wars after all and while TFA was a playground of pure joy that seemed to get why star wars was fun and also why it could be engaging and impactful, even it's fans would struggle to deny outright the ahem borrowed beats from the original trilogy. i dont even mind it either, the usages are mostly contextualized and appropriate, but its still there and it seems like a fair place to parallel from. soooo we know the emperor is back presumably in ghost form, and he is gonna be trying to turn kylo into his next apprentice. so logic would suggest under the jj star wars brand this will end to some effect with kylo seeing the error of his ways and overthrow the big bad PALP. cool, see this is derivative but i dare say its a little perfect. in one grand move, kylo can redeem himself, luke, renounce the dark side's overt grip, and reject palpatine's effort to perpetuate the dreaded cycle he set in motion so long ago. its difficult to imagine an ep ix where kylo doesnt change his ways but giving him the emperor to waste is both perfectly fanservice for jj star wars and fittingly full circling as a final gesture for the skywalker saga, by another skywalker clawing his way back to the surface to erase that which has plagued his family for so very long.

so thats about all i have personally conjured but i read one particularly intriguing theory that could add yet one more layer onto the possibilites here, and i hadn't even considered it beforehand but it actually falls neatly in line with the previous observations of the titles. perhaps we have been looking at Skywalker a bit too rigidly, asking who Skywalker is, which Skywalker. lets entertain the maximum wishful thinking and say episode viii wasnt lying. the jedi will end, and in its place after those who helped dismantle the systems they let themselves fall prey to, a new name for a new more inclusive breed of world protector. what the concrete differences would be between a Jedi and a Skywalker are impossible to say, but one could assume a new name implies a new system, new laws. to omit entirely the old ideas could logically include everything down to the descriptor. jedi vs sith could become mere history, maybe to title the movie with a keyword that has more ambiguity than every before could COULD imply that they who must right their wrongs exist in both factions and represent the balance toward a better future once done. everything could change, and what a nice way to leave the name that brought this this series its light and its dark some significance as its titular saga closes.

or itll just be return 2. but a man can dream.
