AD isn't going to be cancelled because of this show. It has had terrible ratings for years. It's not even on hold it starts airing new episodes again next week I am pretty sure

I really enjoyed this. It was generally pretty funny, except for a few jokes that fell flat, namely the crotch joke, and I think the characters of Bob, Gene, and the younger daughter (can't remember her name) have real potential. The plot could've used some work, particularly the cliched anniversary thing, but I really liked this. Don't know why people are complaining so much.

I think partly because it's new, and new things are scary.
"Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the object worship of the state. It will prescribe for every one where they are to work, what they are to work at, where they may go and what they may say. Socialism is an attack on the right to breathe freely. No socialist system can be established without a political police. They would have to fall back on some form of Gestapo, no doubt very humanely directed in the first instance."

I don't know why people were expecting something so great out of a pilot episode. For me, it was just okay, but that's about all you can ask for at this point. I'll continue to support it in hope that it gets better (thought I never cared much for Home Movies or KOTH). Of course, it will probably take more episodes than Fox will allow for them to make the show good. Unfortunate.

I was simultaneously reading scripts, in an AIM chat and flirting with a girl I met on a dating site while watching last night and still cracked up just by hearing the familiar voices of Ron Lynch, Fenton, Paula's boss and McGuirk. Re-watching with full focus, it was rather bumpy in parts but at least had a straightforward plot that allowed itself to keep the Bouchard-esque meandering dialogue-driven comedy in place despite being surrounded by the gag-oriented MacFarlane shows. Even the attempt at cutaways worked (mostly because they were actually funny), which must have been a pace up-kicker to keep the executives pleased and happy. Honestly, the plot at times was a little too overwrought (c'mon, the coffin bit?), but I'm sure everything will be smoothed over in later episodes.

Also, I'm not so sure the great ratings is a good thing. The highly-rated Jets game skyrocketed practically the entire block, lord have mercy on the show next week, because it may see a massive drop. Regardless, I'm sure I'll enjoy every single one of its guaranteed thirteen episodes whenever they air, whether they be the rest of this spring, burned off in the summer, or next year on Adult Swim.

Yeah kind of worried that they'll be a massive drop in ratings next week. Still it's cool that nearly 10 million people watched a Louren Bouchard produced show starring Jon Benjamin, even if it did bore most of them.

Pretty much seconding everything Kiyosuki said. A fixer-upper for sure.

I feel like this show has the exact opposite problem that The Simpsons has with humor. The pacing of the jokes are generally great, but the subject matter itself is either unfunny or unpleasant. There was a great deal of low-brow toilet humor, complete with a running gag about an itchy crotch. To be fair, however, it is fairly realistic that their son would be obsessed with fart noises and whatnot... On the other hand, they could probably tone it down a bit. I'm not against all low-brow humor or anything, but they probably need to figure out something better to do with the kids than try to gross us out.

Still, they have nice snappy dialogue going, so it gives me hope that they could knock it out of the park with better joke subject matter. After watching The Simpsons manhandle so many good joke ideas, it's nice to see a show that at least knows how to tell a joke.

Hey guys... people had the same reactions to American Dad's pilot episode, too.

Overall, I enjoyed the episode, but it just made me wish Home Movies was back. They also chose some very strange jokes to start a series on... I can tell this show isn't going to last. FOX viewers just won't get this style of humor.

I can see this getting good. Last nights episode wasn't bad and had some hilarious gags. But as most said it has a few holes that need to be fixed up so it can stay in the Sunday night line up. It was the best show of the night I thought(not that that is really saying much).

Not sure where I sit with this show.

First episode didn't blow me away... some slow bits, some characters I didn't care for (at points, I just wanted Bob to slap one of his moron kids)... but the parts that worked, were interesting and funny. Some unique humor stylings and darker than I expected.

I'll give it more time... probably more than Fox will if the #'s aren't good... but we'll see where it goes.
I've been accused of vulgarity. I say that's bullshit!

I thought it was ok - very much in the vein of Home Movies and with a mix of dark, weird and subtle humor.

Very little made me laugh though (except from the flashbacks) and some of the dialogue was really awkward: "What are you a dirty burger inspector?" "Erm...yeah".

Probably watch the next episode during my lunch break or something...

Saw the pilot for American Dad a short while ago and it was pretty bad. It had at least three cutaways, proving that at the time writers were very uncomfortable with changing anything more than the cast of the show to differentiate it from Family Guy.

And I liked Bob's Burgers. I think I laughed out loud several times every act besides the third. I'll be watching as it improves.

No they don't. Come on...shut up.

    Bingo

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what there was in this show to laugh at or enjoy; it was straight up shock/grossout humor hold the wit. Fart jokes don't become funny just because they're "ironic." I admit I couldn't finish watching it but I watched up to the point where the health inspector comes in and I didn't smile once. The only thing that almost got a chuckle out of me was the health inspector's partner not understanding the child molester joke (funny, since the child molester joke itself was terrible).

The dad's deadpan delivery would have been very funny if he had anything actually amusing to say.

you're not, this thread actually seems pretty evenly split between people that love it or at least are sort of intrigued by it, and people that despise it or just don't really like the type of non-gag driven humor. At least from what I've seen too, it seems similar in other places as well. Opinions are pretty polarized on this so far, at least from my view.

It's probably not going to win out the general audience but you never know, it may have some small chance of carving out a decent niche for itself. It's all up to where these guys take their show now I think.

You should watch Home Movies, Eddie.

I thought this was great. Was pleasantly surprised to hear Sam Seder and Ron Lynch. Hope they recur.

Yeah the American Dad pilot wasn't so good, and the following episode was even worse. "Francine's Flashback" was the first episode where I thought the show had promise. The "Stan of Arabia" two-parter made me a lot more hopeful. AD was uphill from there.

Pretty much my experience with AD, which I've since rediscovered on Netflix in the past two days. Terrible pilot, even worse second episode, then a string of mediocre episodes leading to end-season highlights: A Smith in the Hand and the solid 2-parter. Since then, the show's been consistently entertaining enough to tune in, I'd say.

Bob's Burgers seems like it has some promise at the moment. I was moderately amused throughout, although I feel that something is lacking with the setting and general "feel" of the show. It's sort of bleak and dank, and not really in a fun way. But at the moment, I'll keep tuning in to see how it evolves.

True, but American Dad had (and has always had) the aegis of being a Seth MacFarlane brainchild, and, as you said, it was awful in the beginning. Anyone saying bad things about AD after the pilot would have been right to do so. I didn't see any "promise" in AD, but that show underwent an amazing metamorphosis and became much cleverer and much more plot-driven, and perhaps most importantly, distinguished itself from Family Guy.

I suppose the same thing could happen to this show, but AD is the exception, not the rule. The rule as far as I'm concerned is that bad shows are bad.

I still think American Dad is pretty awful.

Personally, if I had to name an awful animated pilot that became an amazing show, I'd probably name South Park. Although I'd also have to acknowledge that South Park was a (commercial) hit right out of the gate regardless.
Two eyes, two ears, a chin, a mouth, ten fingers, two nipples, a butt, two kneecaps, a penis. I've just described to you the Loch Ness Monster. And the reward for its capture? All the riches in Scotland. So I have one question: why are you here?

I can totally understand that--it took me an extremely long time to warm up to American Dad, even while catching some of the better episodes along the way. But I think actually sitting down and catching several episodes in a row (all of them are available through Netflix's instant-streaming, making it simple to watch on the Wii) allowed me to become accustomed to the cast and the style of humor.

Of course, it's not going to be everyone's thing, but as a guy who's always disliked Seth MacFarlane, and has never been a fan of Family Guy or Cleveland, I have to admit I can see a lot of strong elements in American Dad. That said, I don't think it's a great show overall--many of the side characters are still too shallow and/or unlikable, the art style has always remained pretty generic, a lot of the jokes can be cheap shock gags about rape, etc--but it does have a very large amount of clever ideas, and dare I say, moments of brilliance.

Incidentally, South Park was a show I just didn't like for awhile as well. Around the 8th season or so, I started watching some of the S3-S8 stuff and gradually got hooked on it. Sometimes it takes some time to get used to the feel of a show, especially if it can have shocking or disturbing idiosyncrasies that can be off-putting for the uninitiated. I.e. "Did that guy just shove a hamster up his gay partner's butt...!?" And so on.

Well they'd probably have to switch to flash animation but I doubt you would see any difference. However ironically I think the show is more old-school adult swim and not like their current absurdist, off-the-wall programming that seems to be raking in their ratings. They could take it on, maybe.

Yeah American Dad's first steps were pretty atrocious, if it weren't for the fact it was made by Seth McFarlane it probably would have been cancelled really fast.

I got into South Park late too...first saw it around the fifth season, and didn't really start watching it regularly for a few years. As a general rule, I think seasons 6+ are the best ones and opinions about the superiority of the earlier years completely baffle me, even though I do mostly enjoy them.

The shock stuff never bothered me that much, though. I did (and still do) always appreciate that the show so often does things that I just cannot believe they are getting away with airing on television. The shocking-ness of it was never a concern or negative for me, but I didn't like that so much of the first season or so felt like it was consciously trying to be shocking while not actually being very shocking, which incidentally is how I tend to feel about MacFarlane humor in general. In the South Park pilot it appears that they thought just saying "dildo" was inherently funny. Ah, how quickly that show evolved from there.
