I was really young at the time of its release. This fat feller scared me every time:

Anyways, Treasure Planet had some of the coolest designs I have seen Disney Animation Studios do in terms of their traditional department, probably because of its steam-punk style designs. Atlantis: The Lost Empire was also one of the more visually stunning designs I've seen from them. Gorgeous matte paintings.

    Atlantis:

    Treasure Planet:

But I did find the story and characters very forgettable and the designs seemed to be the only aspect that stayed in my head over the years. I'd gladly rewatch it again to rehash what happened though.

Plot and characters were okay, setting was cool, action was neat, and animation was excellent.
Also, that theme song is goddamn gorgeous.

maybe i'm a complete idiot but i had this movie mixed up with atlantis: the lose empire for a long time. i don't consider either film particularly special or memorable and feel like they marked the beginning of a new slump for disney. sorry, box.

The weird and the strange aliens and how the movie is confused on whether it should be a 1800's story or a future story is extremely off-putting, though the strong female characters and the mentor relationship between the redeemed villian and the hero is very deep and mature for a disney movie. If the movie could just chose, whether it wants to be a flying robotic like fantasy, or more a traditional pirate epic and just remove the fart jokes, it could of been a solid disney classic.
