Didn't realise how early Herman was introduced to the show. No couch gag, Homer rejecting a cupcake at the very start of the episode? This must be old. I have some pretty mixed feelings on this episode. I think we see a lot of Jerkass Lisa. I mean, she gave Bart a cupcake which she dropped on the floor. Not even Homer would do that. But yeah, I liked this episode, A classic 3.5/5

    Best parts of the episode
    Bart's funeral
    'Ask anyone!' *awkward silence*
    The happy birthday balloons
    Lisa's kiss
    Bart's speech about war

This is a great episode, but it isn't as good as I used to think it was. Compared to even the episodes in Season 2, it feels very old (perhaps even like a Saturday morning cartoon from the 70's. I know it's not nearly that old, but that is what it reminds me of). It is still a great episode, though, and that even gives it a certain charm. 7/10

The best episode of the season, along with Moaning Lisa. Maybe not the funniest episode, but still one I always enjoy watching. 9/10, 5/5 for the poll.

This is an episode i have always enjoyed. There are some awesome stuff here, like Bart walking with the other kids singing. Bart looking at everyone and it reflecting in his glasses. The ending with Barts speech. The "Water Baloon" fight. Barts Funeral. Bart fighting Nelson in his imaginations at school. Hermans comment about keeping you arm out of the bus. Grandpa writing on his typewriter words he never wants to hear again. Bart coming home after being beaten by Nelson. Bart and Lisas exchange at the bus are all hilarious. The plot is solid as well, and never went off-topic, it was always concentrated at Bart beating Nelson. The caracterizetions were spot-on. Overall an great episode. Grade:A

A benchmark of the early seasons are the rather simple problems and their rather simple solutions. This episode is wish fulfillment. Bart has a bully and he is defeated by use of force. That’s not a knock against it by any means. On the contrary, it opens up a world of military parody, and some wonderful animation.

Homer is in full Walter Matthau mode in this episode, starting at the beginning when he sits Bart on his knee and gives him some salient advice on ‘greasing the wheels’ when he learns Lisa has made cupcakes for her teacher. Lisa is wonderfully manipulative in the way she coerces Bart to pay her compliments in payment for said cupcake. I can tell you it’s a trait most little sisters possess. She takes it a step further and gives him the one that fell on the floor.

There follows a superbly animated and directed fantasy sequence in which Bart tries to fight off Nelson. In fact, this episode is filled with great animation. Sure their mouths don’t always line up with what they’re saying. They get it right where it counts.

Homer’s next piece of advice to Bart is that sometimes to win, you have to fight dirty. There’s no shame in hitting a man when his back is turned! And a trick that has apparently been around for generations involves the ‘family jewels.’ I will point out that Bart asks for Homer’s help, crying, fully clothed, in the bathtub. It makes more real the trauma that bullies cause.

Grandpa makes his first appearance in this episode after Homer’s tactics have failed. He’s introduced writing a complaint letter about the elderly being displayed as energetic and joyful. He also gives a list of words he never wants to hear on TV again: Bra, horny, family jewels. Here we have an early instance of the show making reference to itself as a show.

The show also continues to build its own mythology. Upon meeting Herman, Bart asks if he got his arm ‘blown off in the war’ and is told that “when your teacher tells you to keep your arm inside the bus, you’d better listen.” This recalls a moment in Homer’s Odyssey, when Ms. Krabappel warns that “everyone knows what happened to that boy who didn’t keep his arm inside the bus.”

The military parody is ratcheted up in the third act, the music even takes a militaristic tone. There’s marching and military planning, (apparently the Greek and Carthaginians have invaded Springfield before) and general hilarity throughout. Nelson is vanquished by way of water balloons and an armistice treaty is signed. In the end, everyone gets a cupcake.

Nelson here has his two henchmen with him, jointly titled but otherwise unnamed, “The Weasels.” Eventually being abandoned for Jimbo, Dolph, and Kearny, they serve the same purpose, to increase the sense of the bully’s menace, though they serve Nelson whereas the others can operate independently. They are a force in the school that Skinner either accepts or is ignorant of.

The episode ends with a monologue by Bart declaring that there are no good wars, with the exception of the American Revolution, World War II, and the Star Wars trilogy. On that I will judge him: correct.

My favourite Season 1 episode. 5/5
