What was Nelson's last name? Did my subtitles say Nelson Prince or am I going crazy...

And Nelson did kind of use his trademark haw haw in this episode, in the Bart's dream of big Nelson chasing him around.

    Episode: 4/5.

I just had to say something about this episode that I just rewatched with my DVD player today. It's my second favorite episode in Season 1, the first one being The Call Of The Simpsons. I just like the overall atmosphere in this episode and the ending is really great with Bart's huge army that gives a lesson to Nelson.
I also really like the way they introduce Herman (the way he tells Bart why he should never stick his arm out of a school bus is hilarious). I also like Abe in this episode. The scene where he's typing on his machine is great.
    Very enjoyable episode!

3/5 In the bottom 5 of the season 1.
Good references to Full Metal Jacket.

"Well it was good, but not great" is pretty much how I feel about this episode. More entertaining and dramatic than some of the early episodes but it wasn't as funny as it could have been, though there were amusing moments with Homer. Good Bart characterisation as well. Also I really liked the tense music here too. Overall, a fun episode but not a classic.

    B+.

My favourite season 1 episode. I always watched this one when it came on TV.
The homage to Patton and the references to Full Metal Jacket and Cool Hand Luke are brilliantly done.
I was born 3 days after it premiered, which makes it feel a little extra special to me

    Best Quotes:

Bart : Uh oh, a cold wind.

Nelson: I'll get you after school, man.
    Bart: But-
Skinner: No no no, he'll get you after school, son. Now hurry up, it's time for class.
    Bart: But-
Skinner: Scoot, young Simpson, there's learning afoot.

Skinner: Goodbye, son. I guess you were right, all that homework was a waste of your time.

Lisa: Bart, here's that cupcake you wanted. I can't help but think that if I had just given ot to you in the first place, this whole horrible tragedy could have been avoided.
I know you can't eat it now, so I'll just place it lovingly on your forehead.
Nelson: Hey look, they got food at this thing.

    The rules of the schoolyard:
    1. Don't tattle
    2. Always make fun of those different than you
    3. Never say anything unless you're sure everyone feels exactly the same way you do

Homer: Well, thank you very much Mrs. Maharishi Gandhi.

Bart: I'm here to see Grampa.
Receptionist: Half the people here are named Grampa.

    Herman: Hello, young American.
Bart: Hello, Sir. Uh, Mr. Herman, did you lose your arm in the war?
Herman: my arm? Well, let me put it this way: next time your teacher tells you to keep your arm inside the bus window, you do it!

Herman: The key to Springfield has always been Elm Street. The Greeks knew it, the Carthaginians knew it, and now you know it.

Bart: I can't promise you victory. I can't promise you good times, but the one thing I do know- Wow wow, alright! I promise you victory! I promise you good times!

Bart: What's the matter with you, Soldier?
Soldier: It's my nerves, Sir. I just can't stand the barking anymore.
Bart: Your nerves (slap) I won't have cowards in my army- (slap)
Grampa: Sorry, Bart. You can push them out of a plane, you can march them off a cliff, you can send them off to die on some God forsaken rock, but fior some reason, you can't slap 'em. Now apologize to that boy, right now.

Bart: ..is it OK if they say Happy Birthday on the side?
Herman: I'd rather they say "DEATH FROM ABOVE", but I guess we're stuck.

Homer: You, up in the tree. The tall gray-haired kid! Get your butt down here, right now!

Highlights include the 3 roads to success, Bart's daydream nightmare, Bart imagining his funeral, Homer "grieving", Nelson giving him "one for the road", Homer drying Bart's tears, Homer teaching Bart to fight dirty, the failed fight, Grampa's letter, Jasper bullying Grampa, The training sequence, BATTLE STATIONS, the kissing sailor (Eww, knock it off), and Bart's epilogue.

4/5. Not quite as funny as some of the peak years, but a good episode that didn't rely on "random event random event incoherent plot end" style.

Story: Very solid and well-crafted. I thought the army training went on for too long, and that prevents the episode from being flawless, but the rest was all good. Bart's moral speech at the end breaking the 4th wall was a bit odd, but I didn't mind.

Characterization: Excellent. No complaints here. We keep finding out more about the supporting cast and OFF are in good shape (particularly Homer and Bart).

Jokes: Homer kind of steals the show here, with his hilarious lessons to Bart (“Bart! You’re saying butt-kisser like it’s a bad thing…”). I also liked the visual of Homer drying Bart's tears with the hairdryer. The scenes at school and at the old people's home are touching and/or funny (like Grandpa Simpson writing his complaint letter). I also liked that they followed up the joke in Homer's Odyssey about a student losing his arm in the school bus. Funnier than average in season 1.

I liked this episode just because it was fun, and had a great storyline. The whole sequence where Bart trains the kids to fight against Nelson. Also what happened to his two old toadies?

A great season 1 episode and a great indicator of the upward direction that this show was heading. Great plot, storyline, dialogue etc and I could relate to the circumstances of the episode very strongly 5/5

One of my favourites from season. It doesn't quite beat episode one, but it's damn good.

What is that? A fat joke (over the internet)? What's your issue, bitch? Got daddy problems?

Need to settle your ass down, get over your "clinical" depression, understand that it's not going to get better til you grow up.
