This one is saved by some good joke writing and a well-structured story. The ruination of Hoemr's character is just beginning here, but mercifully Bart still had about a season to go before they watered him down, and that strengthens this episode a bit. 4/5

she didnt exactly read shrek the 3rd, which apparently exists as some sort of companion book for a pixar movie. no, this would probably take several minutes (perhaps 10), and would have ultimately depricated the shrek 3 cinematic experience

she merely looked at the book

she saw it, perhaps in the childrens section of a barnes & noble, registered it in her mind as being in existance, and filed it away for later as the subject for a post on BOOKS YOUVE READ. only she just looked at it. and it was shrek 3

in a way its the saddest post ive ever read

Its a shame this was executively produced by the person that it was, but anyway, it's a great episode and, unlike some of season nine, I have no problems with characterization and such. I dont think Homer was being a jerkass in it, even with all his Flanders bashing and stuff.

I liked this one. It wasn't great, but it had some good moments. I enjoyed the C-U-P joke, even if it was basically toilet humor, and as annoying as Homer was, I did chuckle at the cut joke, the first couple times.

Not perfect but certainly passable. 4/5.

Kids, let me tell you about another so-called ``wicked'' guy. He had long hair and some wild ideas. He didn't always do what other people thought was right. And that man's name was...
I forget. But the point is... I forget that, too. Marge, you know what I'm talking about. He used to drive that blue car?

    3.75/5 ----> 4/5

The episode is decent and it has some great gags (Homer calling Mr. Burns, the health fair, and Homer bashing Flanders as a coach). Still, I can't help but feel that the episode is a little flat. The Homer and Bart relationship stuff lacks the punch of earlier episodes (though it's better than the next Homer/Bart episode King of the Hill, which came later that season).

I'm extremly surprised by how liked this episode is here. not because I dislike the episode, but I've never heard such positive remarks about the episode. Homer was a jerk for a bit too long, but I really felt sorry for Bart. I love Home shouting "FLAAAANDERS!" when in the crowd. A good episode, and okay for a second episode by a new showrunner. 4/5

C- 2/5. Terrible season 9 episode. Any potential good jokes are ruined by the sheer amount of childish gags, character bastardization, and predictable story.

This is not at all a bad episode, it has several really good jokes, gags and bits, like when Homer calls Mr. Burns, the story itself is good and it's also an rewatchable episode. The thing I don't like that much is that Flanders seemed to get mad at Homer very easily in this one, when Homer has in earlier episodes behaved much worse to him and Flanders did not react like he did in this episode at all. I also didn't mind Homer's jerkassness in this one.

    4.5/5 or simply 4/5

Very funny episode, but Homer is irritating in his favoring Bart and forfeiting when Bart couldn't play (I know he's supposed to be irritating). It also feels a bit "by-the-numbers" simply because it's a sports episode. 3.5/5

It's like 'Lisa On Ice', what with an irritating Homer as a satire on those types of parents, but then with a lot less good jokes, and not nearly as much reason to sympathize with Bart.

Homer was far too annoying for me and that is what dropped it down. I love football and I loved that portion of the show. Many good jokes, but Homer was...gahh.

I find it bizarre how episodes like this are rated equal to above-average recent episodes, though it's clearly miles and miles ahead. If it were to come out today, people would wonder where the humor came from. The episode has a logical plot that is followed through to the end, a solid attempt at an emotional story, a ton of great jokes, and SKITTLEBRAU. The characterizations are off, so that brings it down a point, but overall it's great. 4/5

A strong indicator of what was to come in the rest of the Scully era... you have Jerkass Homer, an out of character Flanders and a lot of failed jokes. Utterly forgettable.

Meh besides the Joe Nameth's 'vapor lock' bit and Millhouse kicking Bart in the groin, I didn't find the episode particularly engaging and the 'cut' joke grew tired very quickly, on the other hand I did chuckle at the whole 'big quitter' line 2/5.

This is where Homer's swift decline in characterization under Scully first showed itself for any length in time. It's a wonder how the Cartridge Family didn't manage to be with its premise, but nevertheless Bart Star is what I would nominate for the inciting episode that really moves toward the obnoxious Homer becoming the norm.

On the plus side, we've got some nice jokes that I'm sure the majority of people love. This is the case with most of Scully's season 9 work, where there are laughs to be had even if some elements appear to be faltering.

Considering this came out in 1997 this is incredibly mediocre in its historical context and may have arguably been one of the weakest at the time. Flaws aside, this still isn't a trainwreck and it'd most certainly be a gem today. 4/5 (B-)

It totally bored me while watching it again today.
Like other episodes in season 9, it shows the beginning of the series' decline.

One little bit of continuity: Nelson's dad the way he was depicted in "Brother from the Same Planet".
