Hmm... this episode's hilarious, but IMO it has problems with pacing, so I'm giving it a 4/5.

BTW, it's unfortunate that this was J&R's swan song. O&W ended their run with a few lackluster episodes, but made up for it with Lisa The Simpson, which is a perfect episode.

Just like I voted - Exsellent!
The Lenin cameo is my favorite part, but rest of the jokes are great. I wish Apu would do more then just two lines...

The Soviet Union thing is insane but brilliant, as a whole though the episode isn't fantastic.

I caught a repeat of Simpson Tide the other day and realised I hadn't seen it in a long, long time. I realised whilst watching that the amount of cutaways, meta referencing and pop culture references made it seem like an early Family Guy episode, despite airing long before it. In the Navy, Soviet Union's return, ship full of penguins, Do the Bartman... the script could have easily been a Peter Griffin adventure.

I don't really like this episode. 2.5/5, maybe a 3/5 on the poll.

I DO like the Mr. Moe thing though.

5/5 and I would give that alone for the following:

Drill Sergent: All right, Simpson. I don't like you, and you don't like me.
    Homer: I like you.
Drill Sergent: Um, all right. You don't like me, but I don't like you.
Homer: Maybe you would like me if you got to know me.
Drill Sergent: What are you, a comedian?
Homer: Well, I'm no Margaret Cho, but I do a pretty fair Columbo impression. Eh, one more thing One... I should get a glass of water.
    Drill Sergent: Aaaarrrggghh..!

The funniest episode of the season 9, however the Soviet Union part is completely insane.

never been that keen on it really, was completely surprised by the love it got when I first saw the reviews. It's not really that funny and it's almost too wacky; I don't like the Soviet Union part. The whole episode just ends up feeling like some stuff that happened. In fact I would probably label this as a gagfest that didn't quite work. 3/5 because there were some funny parts (Homer dressed up as a communist etc).

The Swan Song of my namesakes Al Jean and Mike Reiss and one of my absolute favourites by them. Others have referenced the cutaway gags and general zaniness as a weakness, but I think it was Jean/Reiss' greatest strength. Not an emotional episode, but if you're looking for a good laugh this ones a winner.

    Best Quotes:
    Homer: It's my first day
Mr. Burns: Since I've never seen you before, maybe it is your first day. Very well. Carry on.
Smithers: Uhh Sir, that's Homer Simpson. He's been working here for ten years
Mr. Burns: Ohhhh really. Why did you think you could lie to me?
    Homer: It's my first day.
Mr. Burns: Well why didn't you say-AWoooo You're fired

Commercial: ...America's 17th line of defense. Between the Mississippi National Guard and The League Of Woman Voters. After basic training, you only have to work one weekend a month. And most of that time you're drunk off your ass...
Homer: You know Lisa, I've taken a lot from this country. Maybe it's time I gave something back.
Lisa: Are you thinking of joining the Naval Reserve?
Homer: Would you be proud of me?
    Lisa: Eh, sort of.

    Homer: There's a question that's crossed out.
Recruiter: Well, due to a recent presidential order, we're not allowed to ask that particular question.
Homer: Oh I think I can make it out. Are you a homosexu-
Recruiter: Oh for God's sake. Don't answer that, I could go to jail!
Homer: but I'm not a homo-
    Recruiter:LlalalalalalalaI-am-not-listeninglalalala
Homer: Nice fella. I wonder if he's gay

Crewman: We've been hit by an officer.
Officer: they're gonna fire on us. We'll respond in kind. Fire..not me, a torpedo

Grampa: My Homer is not a communist. he may be a liar, a pig, an idiot, a communist, but he is NOT a porn star

Ralph's "My neck hurts and my ear hurts. I have two Owies"

Highlights include Homer's clapper lamp, Donut Court, Rock Em Sock Em Robots, Do the Bartman(That is so 1991), JFK's terrible secret, In The Navy sequence, Moe and Apu thinking about their loved ones, as well as the Soviet Union scene (Must. Crush. Capitalism.), the Deer Hunter sendup, and the whole Crimson Tide parody.

Wow, haven't reviewed this one yet? Excellent episode. It gets a bit wacky at times, but it's very enjoyable throughout. 4.5/5, rounded up to a 5.

Overly boring with very few great jokes. However, I did enjoy it enough to warrant an "okay" rating of 3/5.

This episode is pretty good until the submarine goes to Russia, then it just gets wacky and stops making sense. Maybe it is my lack of knowledge of the military, but I have no idea why they would go there in the first place (I would think they would surface to look for land before deciding which direction to go, and failing that, wonder why they hadn't reached land yet and figured they were going in the wrong direction before they got to Russian waters), or why that would be considered treason. And it continues to get wackier when Russia becomes the Soviet Union (which, by the way, is never resolved). 4/10

Great episode. The whole navy plot was perfect. Bart's subplot was also good. Definitley one of the best episodes in Season 9. A

I feel like there were some jokes that didn't really work and the ending was kinda lazy. It had some good gags too and it's overall wackiness is what makes it good. 4/5

Bart: Hey, Homer, bring me back a torpedo.
    Homer: No.
Bart: But Flanders got his kids torpedoes!
Homer: Oh, he did, did he? I'll show him! I'll bring you a weapon of unimaginable destructive power!

Congratulations! You are now world war one historical re-creationists!uh-oh..

overall, great humour and basic storyline. just a shame about the careless 3rd act and stupid ending. but probably my favourite season 9 episode.

This was actually hilarious despite the absurdity, or maybe it was because of it. To bad there weren't any more Jean/Reiss episodes after this.
One thing I wonder, how did the line "I'll plug your hole!" Get past the censors? That sounded wrong on so many levels.

I'm not a fan of wacky episodes, and this is one of the wackiest up to that point. This one also has pacing issues especially in the first act. Things happen extremely fast for no apparent reason, it just feels like a collection of rushed scenes whose only purpose is to get Homer in a submarine. The scene at Moe's in particular, I guess it was the point but it just felt lazy to me. There are a lot of jokes, many of them hit (the WW1 reenactment club, Homer's archive photo, "my Homer's not a communist", "Sherri but not Terri"...), but some were just awful (the In the Navy bit, the dinner scene with the captain, the whole Soviet Union thing). The ending felt like a copout too. Despite its flaws it's not that bad of an episode, I just think it's overrated. 3/5.
