Rate and Review South Park: "Member Berries"

Original Airdate: September 14th, 2016. On the Season 20 premiere, Mr. Garrison is still on the campaign trail, as a new American national anthem is made. R&R after airing.

the member berries were, surprisingly, somewhat funny. I initially liked the call back to Douche and Turd, but then they had to keep using it beyond the dinner table segment.

Otherwise just an episode full of nothing. Typical new SP fare although I will say the twist at the end is actually shocking for their standards. Guess we'll see how they play out whatever plot they have until they fumble it badly at the end anyway. 1.5/5 rounded to a....2? on the poll.

why do they try and tackle so many topics in one episode? just makes it all so unfocused.

Decent episode I guess, some of the jokes were funny, but the problem was that had too many stories/subjects for a single episode. It's nice to see a little of what we're gonna see this season, but it definitely was unorganized.

    Merry Christmas!

there seems to be a new terrible show after South Park on an annual basis now

but I did feel like Moonbeam City maybeeeeeeeee could have salvaged something in the long run. This one is a total disaster.

  8. #8

Legends of Chamberlain heights is disappointing. I was looking forward to it when I heard Brad Abelson and bento box came together to make this, but it's utter shit. Even worse it's already got a second season. Moonbeam City was rough but it got better.

Moral: if it's cheap and easy to make, you can keep going.

Was there any change to the National Anthem? I was hoping that there would of been some changes causing outrage.

no but  the joke of the episode was that they enlisted jj abrams to reinvent standing for the anthem, so abrams made it so whether you were standing or sitting or kneeling you were still showing respect for the flag and anthem.

Yep. They're not giving up the continuity.
Is Cartman ever gonna be back to his evil, manipulative self again? I know he still is, but always seeing his plans from everyone else's perspective when he's playing nice has gotten old. Uh, Gerald being Skankhunt is pretty weird. A grown man going on a message boards to bully little girls. Also those member berries were quite creepy. I also get that they wanna comment on politics and all but... That shit doesn't interest me in the slightest. I really don't get the political satire, I focus more on the story itself. I hope we get something simple and normal with the boys instead of politics politics politics.

I had the reveal that it was Gerald behind the trolling spoiled because anti-Semitic dipshits were posting "SOUTH PARK NAMED THE JEW!" with the screenshot of him sitting at the computer everywhere as soon as it finished.

I liked the J.J. Abrams stuff and the Member Berries were funny. I like the idea that Cartman's supposedly trying to better himself because being PC is the new norm in the town since PC Principal arrived yet doing it in a way that's still way off the mark. Little Red Riding Kyle was good. His whole thing about what women's comedy consists of is petty much the same bullshit that I shared in that "Stupid people on the internet" thread.

The Douche and Turd retread was boring, especially when the original episode had a literal giant douche and turd sandwich pitted against each other and here it was just used as a label for Garrison and Clinton. Sharon's voice sounded super off. Hillary looking like a weird cross between a gargoyle and a scrotum was dumb. The whole "Garrison/Trump doesn't know what the fuck he'll do if he wins and secretly wants to lose" bit has been done to death already.

I got a small laugh out of the smash cut to Garrison/Jenner dancing to "Cake By The Ocean".

An iffy start to the season for sure, and I really couldn't care about this election shit with Garrison. Hopefully it can take a backseat and not be part of every subplot we get this season.

2.5/5, 2 for the poll. A mediocre setup with little promise or interesting element outside of the ending with Gerald and the gender war being sparked.

It's not that far out there. I'm sure there's plenty of sad bastards who are middle aged hurling abuse at young girls on various corners of the Internet right now.

i don't know, when was the last time they used gerald for anything substantial? usually they use randy for most of their plots, probably just giving him something to do.

We'll see. I hope they actually thought of a reason it would be him and didn't just pick him to end the episode.

So, this is the episode that kicks off the 20th season and they did so with a pretty average episode. Then again I can't say I was expecting that much from this episode anyways, so whatever. The way this episode started with the whole sitting down for the national anthem was something that I didn't find funny and I didn't really get it either. After that the episode just does whatever the hell it wants and some things work while others don't. The Member Berries stole the show, the J.J. Abrams stuff was pretty funny, Cartman preaching the women are funny stuff was enjoyable, but it did start to get old after a while and the Mr. Garrison stuff was just terrible. Whenever there was a scene with Mr. Garrison in this episode, I felt like I was sitting through the trainwreck that was Where My Country Gone all over again. God, that was one of the worst South Park episodes ever and the montage where Garrison says "Fuck them all to death." was just painful to watch. At least the gag where Caitlyn Jenner runs over people with her car is nowhere to be seen in this episode. On a storytelling level this episode isn't really engaging and it focuses on so many things at once. I will give this episode credit for that twist in the end though which I did not expect. As for the humor in this episode, there are some moments that really made me laugh like anything involving the Member Berries, Butters laughing when one of the girls insults Cartman and the scene where Cartman reads that storybook, but then there were some jokes that just didn't work.

This was just an average season opener that really doesn't feel like a season opener. As flawed as Stunning and Brave was at least it felt like one and was more focused. This is just an episode where they focus on many plot points and call it a season premiere. Still, it wasn't a complete waste and it had some things going for it, but overall it's just a middle of the road episode. 6/10

Well then, I guess we're in for some huge continuity stories dragging on all the way to the end. I actually hoped they'd just do something entirely new, but they just continue Garrisons plot from previous season. Atleast they haven't overdone PC Principal and other stuff from previous season, hopefully he'll just play a small role this season.

The actual episode is about average, maybe slightly below average. The only good laugh I got was at the beginning, tricking me that people yet again don't give a damn about womans volleyball. The Cartman plot was rather good and had some good laughs, yet I have to wait for future episodes to see the rest... I should just accept that this is the new norm by now. I liked how he ''rebooted'' Little Red Riding Hood in the kindergarten class though, and how he thought that womans vaginas have a ballsack below. I guess I'm most excited to see Geralds reasoning for trolling little girls, and how Cartman plays a role in it.

Memory berries and J.J. Abrams rewriting the national anthem were funny little sideplots, I'm usually into these jokes that make fun of nostalgia and reboots. As a sidenote I don't agree that J.J Abrams improved Star Wars.... *hides himself to prevend execution*

The Garrison plot is the one I care for the least, its rather uninteresting where they continue a plot that I've already seen enough in previous season. Bringing back Giant Douche and Turd Sandwich didn't do any good for the plot, little point in bringing it back when they had a good episode around it already. Caitlyn Jenner hasn't been annoying atleast. And I don't get why they decided to draw Hilary Clinton so much different, while previous season she looked exactly the same as in The Snuke. Maybe Hilary is showing a lot of aging these days, I don't keep up.

2.5/5, just barely rounded to a 3/5 in the poll, but I think a 2/5 would be more fitting. While previous seasons premiere was also rather average, it atleast had a more focussed plot.

Exactly, Randy's clearly gonna have a plot regarding the discovery of Member Berries planting thoughts in peoples heads of "The good ol' days" back when minorities and LGBTQ+ groups had less recognition which is what's making them all vote Garrison over Clinton.

I think the last time Gerald had a story was last season in the Yelp episode but before that I'm tempted to say it was like... Major Boobage from Season 12 when he took to the whole "Cheesing" craze and fights Kenny while they're both high and seeing everything like it's Heavy Metal? I know he's been involved in episodes concerning the parents in general like the Murder Porn one and the one where they all dress up like Bane to attack the UPS drivers but outside of that he hasn't really had much in the way of plots solely regarding him.

I'd rather them not turn him into a Randy-level dingbat tbh. Gerald can have his own weird shit, sure, but don't just make him Randy 2.0.

Yeah, I don't know, my main issue with this episode was the format rather than the content. Most of the things they touched on were done fairly well, though I agree that the Garrison-as-Trump bit is not very interesting. But I just don't care for their new format of ten plots stretched over 10 episodes much. No use complaining about it though since that's just the way the show is now. It does at least make me interested to see where they go with this (and I know that's their goal), even though I doubt there's much of a plan involved.

So "Member _______" is now replacing "YAYAYA I AM LORDE" in South Park related comment sections I assume.

    It's better at least.

Yep, before that it was "Boo Wendy Boo!" in Season 17 and of course Season 19 had people posting "YOU PC, BRO!?". Now it's just gonna be "Member _________" any time a reboot of something gets talked about or people are just generally being nostalgic. Saw people doing it already with stuff like "'Member da Powahhh Puff Giiiiirrrls?".
