Ice Age - When should they have stopped?

The first movie, released in 2002, was pretty well-liked by many, some even went so far as to say they loved it. Personally, I really like it. It's just a cozy little funny (but also dramatic) animated film.
The sequel, while fairly entertaining, didn't live up to the first and introduced two very annoying characters (Crash and Eddie), and also wasn't as funny. I enjoyed it, but I didn't think it was good. Nevertheless, I would say they should have stopped with this one. You don't always need 2 or more sequels.
Dawn Of The Dinosaurs is often considered to be the second best, but I don't like it. I really don't. The plot is incredibly stupid, not to mention it introduces another annoying character: Buck.
Part 4? Just a bad movie. Now we have more annoying characters than ever and it's so dumb sometimes that I just shake my head over what I'm seeing.

And now... A FIFTH ONE IS OUT. That's right, fifth! Why, oh why? WHY, WHY, WHY?!

Anyway, my question is: When should they have stopped? When did the series lose its value for you? Maybe it actually didn't? Vote, dear readers.

Lol just a specific thread title.

I did briefly catch glimpses of the second a third, personally liked them better than the original

Here are my thoughts on the Ice Age franchise.

There's an unwritten rule about animated sequels. 90% of them seem to follow it. The rule is that animated sequels are about one of three things:

    1) A secondary (or sometimes main) character from the first movie falls in love. (Madagascar 2, Cinderella 2, Mulan 2)

    2) The protagonist is the child of the main character from the first one. (Lion King 2, The Little Mermaid 2, Lady and the Tramp 2)

    3) The second movie takes place during the first movie. (Tarzan 2, Lion King 1 1/2, The Fox and the Hound 2)

Ice Age has never had a sequel that took place during the first one, so we can cross off 3. Manny has a child, but she doesn't become the main protagonist, so kudos to Blue Sky. But number 1?
EVERY SINGLE SEQUEL INVOLVES A CHARACTER FROM THE FIRST MOVIE FALLING IN LOVE.
In Ice Age 2, Manny falls in love. Then Scrat in Ice Age 3, and Diego in Ice Age 4. And in Ice Age 5 SID gets a girlfriend. That's right, Sid!

    Ugh.

It gets to the point where every movie adds so many characters it becomes exhausting to be reintroduced at the start of a new movie. Here's a list of all the characters we're supposed to follow along with in Ice Age 5:
    Manny
    Diego
    Sid
    Scrat
    Buck
    Ellie (Manny's Wife)
    Crash (Possum #1)
    Eddie (Possum #2)
    Peaches (Manny's daughter)
    Shira (Diego's wife)
    Granny (Sid's Grandma)
    Julian (Peaches' fiancé)
    Brooke (Sid's girlfriend)

That's insane! You can't have that many main characters in one movie.

All in all, I don't hate the Ice Age franchise. When they movies focus on humor, it's pretty funny. For example, the stuff with Scrat trying to get the acorn always makes me laugh. But when they try to be dramatic and emotional, the quality goes way down. I just hope in the future they focus less on giving every single character a love interest, and more on just writing a fun story.

The first movie was enjoyable but they should had stopped it after that. The sequels all seem pretty lackluster from what i have seen. Ice Age was nice as a movie but it really did not need a sequel.

What it really needs is a rerelease of the first and make the animation better. The movie is good but the animation makes it so unwatchatble.

    And efter the first.

Disagree, I think the animation looks the most charming out of all of them. I feel the same about the first Toy Story, I like old CGI animation the best if only because it offers the funniest (and weirdest) facial expressions.

The only one I can honestly recall all that well is the first. Had it on a VHS tape as a child. I've seen snippets of the sequels here and there but nothing sticks out as memorable.

I think the fifth will be the last, though. It's slogan is "Kiss your ice goodbye" and the title is Ice Age: COLLISION COURSE, so it's obvious the film will end with an asteroid hitting Earth and everyone dies.
You're a dolt with the IQ of a peabrain that probably loves lowbrow sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory, Frasier and Seinfeld to not grasp the biting satire and wit of the classic 65 (Rugrats).

I can't remember much or anything from the sequels. I'm pretty sure I've only seen 1, 2 and the dinosaur one. But from what I remember of the first, it's pretty good. Sid feels like a character I will hate now, being the annoying comic relief and all. And the baby's design is ugly as hell.

And I say it again. Dat fucking animation.

honestly rather shocked ice age managed to be a huge franchise, because i remember going to see the first one in theaters thinking it was going to be the next shrek and i walked away thinking it was fairly mediocre.

They'll keep making Ice Age films until we reach the next Ice Age.

I saw the first one as a kid, but I haven't watched it in years. No idea if it holds up.

I watched the first one once a decade ago. It was...fairly average at best.

Never watched the sequels and I have no interest to. Honestly I am surprised it has five movies. This is the sort of series you'd expect them to have one, maybe two at a push kind of deals.

Seriously, I'll never understood how this franchise got so popular. I only saw the first film in class as a kid once, and the only thing I can remember is the when they find a ufo and the kid gives the Vulcan salute. But like Open Season and Alpha and Omega, they somehow turned a mediocre film into a franchise and make a crapload of sequels.

Actually, that might be an insult. At least the Ice Age sequels are still shown on theaters and haven't been demoted to direct-to-dvd like Open Season and Alpha and Omega were.

As much I don't think a fifth Ice Age movie is needed, I'll probably still see this movie and still enjoy it.
