    Moana

Looks like Princess Moana is here so I figured I'd get a thread started. Voiced by a 14 year old local girl from my current neighborhood

Unsurprisingly, I am very excited for this to come out and hope they do the Polynesian culture justice. Voyaging is a huge part of the culture so I love that this movie uses that front and center. Maui the demigod is well known to all the local children in the islands since he is the star of many different story books for us, and in this movie he will be played by The Rock.

Whoa, from your neighborhood? Very cool.

I've been intrigued by this ever since it was announced. I quite like the character designs so far.

Not Pixar,.. Walt Disney Animation Studios... Looks good!
Cant wait to see how they represent the people who invented "Dead reckoning navigation".. I predict lots of charm & excitement.

I have been interested in this since I first heard of it since it both looks and sounds interesting (and it's a Clements & Musker production too so it oughta be good); I like those character designs (and since the titular character's VA is from your neighborhood, @cujodog, do you know her personally?)

I'm very curious to see how this one will come out, I love how WDAS has learned their lesson to give their films variety due to the musical/storytelling burnout of the late 90s. and I'm really glad that lin-manuel miranda's music will be sung by characters instead of by him phil collins-style, not that I dislike his voice, it's just that kind of thing is one of my least favorite animated film tropes.

the one thing that makes me roll my eyes is the encouragement of a "healthy" fanbase from way back from just the announcement of the film (and no actualized images of the character)... almost all the "fan art" from prior to this year's D23 (with the official images) just depicts some polynesian chick in a bikini because that's exotic, not erotic as I'm sure those pervy deviantart kids were thinking. pure speculation disney pseudo-toon porn has gotta be up there.

@CountMerl I do not know Auli`i Cravalho personally, no. But if she's in my neighborhood, there's only so much to do there so no doubt she hangs at the Town Center a lot, especially if she goes to the HS right across the street.

    Ron Clements and John Muster

Good to see another film from them. Their track record is pretty good.

I'm way more excited for this than Zootopia.

I do think Zootopia looks interesting too (speaking of which; where's the thread for that one? The first trailer is out and all).

Looks much better than Zootopia, Dwayne Johnson is a bit of an odd choice though.

He is of Polynesian descent. Royal Polynesian descent, even. He lived in the islands early on and even went to my alma matter. He's gonna play King Kamehameha so it doesn't surprise me he is also demigod Maui. Seems like a fine fit to this local girl. Dude's a gentle giant.

Huh, I could have sworn I posted in this thread back when it was first made. I certainly know I had seen @kupomog's mention of the girl that lived on the same street as her. We must have talked about it in Tinychat or something around the same time.

Anyway, critics are giving the Disney shit because Maui is supposedly offensive to Polynesian men with his overweight design, which is apparently a stereotype I was unaware of.
The depiction of a Polynesian character in a Disney film has prompted anger across the Pacific islands, with one New Zealand MP saying the portrayal of the god Maui as obese was “not acceptable”.

Jenny Salesa, who is of Tongan heritage, shared a picture on her Facebook account which said Disney’s rendering of Maui in the film Moana resembled a creature that was “half pig, half hippo”.

“When we look at photos of Polynesian men & women from the last 100-200 years, most of our people were not overweight and this negative stereotype of Maui is just not acceptable - No thanks to Disney,” Salesa wrote.

According to 2014 data from the World Health Organisation nine of the ten most obese nations in the world are Pacific Islands.

Samoan professional rugby player Eliota Fuimanono Sapolu also expressed his disgust at Disney’s portrayal of Maui, writing on Facebook that “Maui looking like after he fished up the Islands, he deep fried em and and ate em”.

In Polynesian mythology Maui is a heroic figure who created the Pacific Islands by fishing them out of the sea.

Will Ilolahia, from the Pacific Island Media Association, told Waatea News that Disney’s version of Maui did not fit with his heroic endeavours in Pacific creation myths.

“He is depicted in the stories that’s been handed down, especially in my culture, as a person of strength, a person of magnitude and a person of a godly nature,” Illolalia said.

“This depiction of Maui being obese is typical American stereotyping. Obesity is a new phenomena because of the first world food that’s been stuffed down our throat.”
Full article, which includes counter arguments that Maui's character looks strong and powerful: https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...a-sparks-anger

Personally, I'm with the "He looks powerful" crowd. The term I keep seeing popping up is that he's "Strongfat", which, yeah, he's a hefty lookin' guy but he still looks like he could knock ten shades of shit out of whoever he wanted, not to mention the size of the hook he's holding in most of the promo stills makes him look even more powerful on top of that. What gets me about some of these comments about the appearance of of Maui is that they seem more like hurtful fat shaming jabs than anything else (He deep fried and ate the islands, huh? Please, tell me more about how much this overweight animated character disgusts you Mr. Rugby Player).

Maybe I'm in the wrong here, because as noted before, I was unaware of this supposed stereotype regarding Polynesian men being overweight, but I'd like to think that Maui is portrayed fairly positively in the movie and that people are being quick to jump the gun in being so pissed off about this.

good address of the specific situation within the context of the group it arose from, not at all an excuse to posit a whiny blanket statement that ignores the details to take a platform that condemns the idea of being offended by anything at all.

people are so easily offended these days, especially children who have no social understanding or context who get pissy when anyone DARES be perturbed about something they cdont understand so it must be stupid. you're not offended, why should they be? everyone should learn to be more like you, this us how we have conversations. all great change in this world starts with a socially myopic twerp goin LOL CALM DOWN.

    CALM SUCCINCT ALTERNATIVE POST

you are alllowed to find an individual issue to be questionable in regards to its importance but you should never ever impulsively strike down these conversations because that benefits nobody. shaun actually assessed the situation and theorized a bit, gave context, his contextualized informed and relevant opinion. shooting people down is not a way for anything to develop, spouting EVERYONE GETS OFFENDED AT EVERYTHING is a good way to guarantee a bad attitude that breeds a fingers-in-the-ears approach to social conversations, and makes you look like a child.

you're not cool for not caring, and you're embracing ignorance under the guise of being too good for a conversation just because YOU dont agree with it. kill your ego, life is Mostly not about you.
