Usually I'd leave my thoughts on songs during the rounds they first pop up in, but I don't really have the energy for that right now, so I'll just be posting my votes on this occasion.

    1. Eddie - 10pm
    2. Starfunksingles - Turasuba
    3. Tadeusz Klimonda - Creme De Menthe
    4. Madlib and J Dilla - The Message

    1.
Eddie - 10pm: Cool musically, but the singer is like 4 years old. Is this shoegaze?
    vs.
My Dad Is Dead - The Quiet Man Great lyrics and music (despite a drum machine). Somewhat relatable lyrics as well.

    2.
Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No, No, No): I generally dislike reggae, but this is pretty good. I liked when the bass came out of nowhere.
    vs.
Starfunksingles - Turasuba: This one is also pretty cool, I think it's better. I'm not familiar with either genres.

    3.
Tadeusz Klimonda - Creme De Menthe: This is straight up from a porno. Wanda whipped many men,but her song couldn't whip me.
    vs.
Takeshi Terauchi & the Bunnys - Kanjincho: This is straight up from a Tarantino film (one point higher than porn). I didn't know the Japanese played surf, but it's pretty good.

    4.
Lee Hazlewood - My Autumn's Done Come::
    vs.
Madlib and J Dilla - The Message: On tier with the one about autumn. Loses by an unviewable amount.

    5.
Kate Tempest - Circles: I wanna hate this, but i like it.
    vs.
Bruce Springsteen - Kitty's Back: I wanna like this, but i love it

    6.
Jawbreaker - Kiss The Bottle: I've always loved rough vocals over rough and melodic music. I love the verses, and choruses, and outro, and the lyrics.
    vs.
Dr. Dog - Unbearable Why: I thought this was going to be hip-hop judging from the name, but it's a 60s lovin indie band. It's OK I guess, but I can't imagine listening to it again. The singer should of expressed more emotion.

    7.
Urbangarde - One Piece Double Suicide: I hate this so much
    vs.
John Adams - Phrygian Gate: I'd expect better from a founding father, but I like it enough.

    8.
Ratatat - Falcon Jab: what the hell was that
    vs.
Frank Turner - If Ever I Stray: Really good, I like it. This is best non-mine one here. I might check it out.

All right, time to put on the headphones and see if I can listen to all of these before the board goes down again

    1.
    Eddie - 10pm
I enjoy how mellow 10pm is set up, but it's like it stays the same throughout to keep that mellow. The kid's voice makes it a bit unsettling to me. The performance on The Quiet Man just sounds kinda unexcited.

    2.
    Starfunksingles - Turasuba
I liked the Dawn Penn track. Very moody. Nice bass, brass, percussion. Turusaba also has a lot of cool instrumentals going on. I particularly enjoyed whenever the clarinet came in. I think both tracks could've been a little shorter, though.

    3.
Takeshi Terauchi & the Bunnys - Kanjincho
Someone's sure trying to seduce us with the Creme de Menthe, but I appreciate the effort that went into it. Last minute was the best part, very cool. But surf mixed with a Japanese sound sure makes for a fun surprise. Guitar playing is solid too.

    4.
Madlib and J Dilla - The Message
Lee Hazlewood sounds great in STEREO. I wasn't feeling it that much, but I can see how it could tug on your heartstrings. Dug the other one slightly more.

    5.
    Bruce Springsteen - Kitty's Back
I didn't particular hate the other one, I just didn't love the music or the vocals. Everything about Kitty's Back is awesome, so I gotta vote for it. Couldn't help but tap various body parts to the beat.

    6.
    Dr. Dog - Unbearable Why
Liked both a lot. I enjoyed the optimistic vibe of Unbearable Why slightly more. Fun arrangement to listen to.

    7.
Urbangarde - One Piece Double Suicide
At first I thought a VGM Showdown track got lost. I would've enjoyed it more without the J-POP vocals. I really love listening to piano music, but Phrygian Gate was just too minimalist for me. At 10 minutes, it then gets exhausting.

    8.
    Ratatat - Falcon Jab
When If Ever I Stray started, I thought at first there was a youtube commercial playing and I went to look for the skip button. Of course, then the music started and I felt dumb. It's a strong song, but something about that voice just doesn't click for me. Falcon Jab is just well put together and sounds very cool. Electro that gets me groovin'

pleasantly surprised at the genre variation this round (that might sound odd coming from the guy who's running this, but i listened to very few of the tracks beforehand). some good listens so far. dawn penn is my favourite this round.

    -------

    1. eddie vs. my dad is dead
neither particularly caught my imagination. eddie was very smooth and listenable, but at the same time repetitive and kind of soulless. my dad is dead sounded a lot like joy division but without the passion. i liked it as a low key melancholic song, but it never particularly struck a nerve.

    2. dawn penn vs. starfunksingles
i really love the bass on the dawn penn track and the way the track just slowly flickers for 4 minutes. it's pretty dark and understated, i like that. it would fit very well in a smokey basement bar. maybe a little long. i liked starfunksingles a lot more than i thought i would but i'm digging the vibe of dawn penn too much.

    3. tadeusz klimonda vs. takeshi terauchi and bunnys
i am an absolute sucker for that 50s/60s americana stuff and the takeshi terauchi track just hits that spot for me. creme de menthe didn't grab me like other funk tracks have in the past

    4. lee hazlewood vs. madlib and j dilla
love the baritone on lee hazlewood, loved the track overall, sent shiver up my spine. liked 'the message' but i've heard better madlib.

    5. kate tempest vs. bruce springsteen
i've always associated bruce with bombastic american dad-rock (i know very little about bruce springsteen), and whilst "kitty's back" is about as un-hip and 70s as you can get, i'm digging it. just a lot of fun. circles was decent but it feels like a bit of a by the numbers pop track in comparison to 'kitty's back'.

    6. jawbreaker vs. dr. dog
    i didn't care for either

    7. urbangarde vs. john adams
i have to concur with zach that this is the most hilariously bizarre matchup ever. you couldn't get more different. the urbangarde track was a lot of fun, i will admit. usually that hyperactive pop stuff turns me off, but it didn't here. but i also legitimately enjoyed the john adams song too, and, like the pretentious dick that i am, i'm going to give the points to musical artistry here rather than fun.

    8. ratatat vs. frank turner
didn't care for either and kind of hated that frank turner track, so ratatat it is.

votin! will post more thoughts if i have the time.

    1.
eddie - 10pm: chill instrumental hip hop, flutes and vocal samples are nice, a good relaxing head-bobber.
    vs.
my dad is dead - the quiet man: dl-ed on the spot. proto-post punk vibes w/ a drum machine makes for a rather unique take on a sound i really dig so that's a huge plus. the vocals are just haunting enough but the effects aren't overwhelming, which stands out in a world of reverb-coated vocals. love this, whoever nom'd it rules.

point goes to my dad is dead.

    ----

    2.
dawn penn - you don't love me (no, no, no): reggae rhythms huh? not really my thing, one of the few genres where i could pick a very limited selection of tunes i legitimately enjoy from it. nothing bad tho, pleasant and makes me wanna sway back and forth to the calm and steady rhythms. vocals are a high point. decent, not exceptional.
    vs.
starfunksingles - turasuba: i like post-rock but this doesn't seem to lift off the ground much, whereas the best post-rock is explosive and transcendent. this just chugs along for six minutes, which is unacceptable length when the music hasn't anything to say for that long. sounds like if tool tried to make a post-rock record (and hired some brass players, which are the highlight). not bad, but hardly what i'm looking for in this sound.

    eh, i guess dawn penn.

    ----

    3.
tadeusz klimonda - creme de menthe: gee i wonder who nom'd this'n! as sexy and groovy as music used in a porno should be. alot of components working well together to create a great porn-funk tune that rides it's groove smoothly yet never hits any sort of specific climax, just riding out until it fades away. the tease! good stuff.
    vs.
takeshi terauchi & the bunnys - kanjincho: i think i'm surfing japanese, i really think so! killer guitar work here, plucking the life outta those strings, and man is it fun. a good steady surf rhythm fronted by fierce lead. nothing much else to say but this is good.

tough, but i'ma go with tadeusz klimonda.

    ----

    4.
lee hazlewood - my autumn's done come: zzzzzzz, huh whuzzat?! sorry but i dunno this does nothing for me. threatens to dissipate altogether.
    vs.
madlib and j dilla - the message: don't. push. me. just. cuz. we. close. to. the. edge! two incredible hip hop talents together here, can't possibly go wrong.

    point goes to jaylib.

    ----

    5.
    kate tempest - circles
    vs.
    bruce springsteen - kitty's back

    ----

    6.
    Jawbreaker - Kiss The Bottle
    vs.
    Dr. Dog - Unbearable Why

    ----

    7.
Urbangarde - One Piece Double Suicide
    vs.
    John Adams - Phrygian Gates

    1.
Eddie - 10pm: just boring to me, but i'm picking it.
    vs.
My Dad Is Dead - The Quiet Man: hate, hate the drum machine. even more than i hate the vocals, which i also hate.

    2.
Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No, No, No): thought it was gonna go into some deep funk at first, guessed wrong. not a fan of reggae, but.
    vs.
Starfunksingles - Turasuba: this type of music does not benefit from being instrumental.

    3.
Tadeusz Klimonda - Crème De Menthe: you cannot beat late 70s library music. the music builds up perfectly, it's a shame it's as short as it is. definitely the sleaziest track used in Wanda Whips. most of the other tracks are detective funk, which is fitting for the plot of the film.
    vs.
Takeshi Terauchi & the Bunnys - Kanjincho: good surf stuff. too bad it's up against something better. hardest match-up, wish this was paired with something else.

    4.
Lee Hazlewood - My Autumn's Done Come: quite the snooze fest.
    vs.
Madlib and J Dilla - The Message: not digging the beat, or the rapping, but i'm picking it nonetheless.

    5.
Kate Tempest - Circles: this is just straight up garbage.
    vs.
Bruce Springsteen - Kitty's Back: decent.

    6.
Jawbreaker - Kiss The Bottle: this is so lame.
    vs.
Dr. Dog - Unbearable Why: eh, it's fine i guess.

    7.
Urbangarde - One Piece Double Suicide: haha, this is ridiculous.
    vs.
John Adams - Phrygian Gate: you couldn't get a weirder match-up if you tried. this is track useless.

    8.
Ratatat - Falcon Jab: well i hated every single effect in this.
    vs.
Frank Turner - If Ever I Stray: no good.

    1.
Eddie - 10pm - i quite liked this. it wasn't mindblowing or whatever but it was relaxing. i don't think it's a song i'd ever desperately want to hear but it made for a pleasant 3 minutes. promising start to the round.
    vs.
My Dad Is Dead - The Quiet Man - i also quite liked this. not much to separate the two here in that i have similar pros and cons down for both really. gonna go with the other one.

    ----

    2.
Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No, No, No) - boom. well into this.
    vs.
Starfunksingles - Turasuba - genuinely can't work out if i like this or not.

    ----

    3.
Tadeusz Klimonda - Creme De Menthe - well, i know who nommed this. i like it a lot too
    vs.
Takeshi Terauchi & the Bunnys - Kanjincho - most interesting match up. pretty tight but this probably edges it.

    ----

    4.
Lee Hazlewood - My Autumn's Done Come - zzzzz
    vs.
Madlib and J Dilla - The Message - de-fault! de-fault! (it was also good)

    ----

    5.
Kate Tempest - Circles - i listen to this anyway and i do that because it is good and i like it
    vs.
Bruce Springsteen - Kitty's Back - kinda alright. bit boring.

    ----

    6.
Jawbreaker - Kiss The Bottle - not my thing
    vs.
Dr. Dog - Unbearable Why - yeah sure, this is fine.

    ----

    7.
Urbangarde - One Piece Double Suicide - well, this was a lot of fun.
    vs.
John Adams - Phrygian Gates -well, this was not a lot of fun

    ----

    8.
Ratatat - Falcon Jab - was super excited by this when it started and then it didn't quite build how i was hoping but enjoyable nonetheless
    vs.
Frank Turner - If Ever I Stray- kinda dull

    I will finish this later.

    1. Eddie - 10pm
I liked both songs, but I found this one to be a bit more interesting and I found it really nice to chill to.

    2. Starfunksimples - Turasuba
Well first off I noticed that the name of the band was put in wrong, so that's a bit odd there. Anyway, I really love this track, the clarinet is a nice/surprising touch. I did like the other track, just not quite as much. Did find myself kind of moving along with it though.

    3. Takeshi Terauchi & the Bunnys - Kanjincho
Creme De Menthe was a pretty cool track overall, I really liked the tone of it. I just found Kanjincho to be a lot more interesting, really liked everything about it.

    4. Madlib and J Dilla - The Message
I liked both tracks but I got into this one a lot more. I found with the other one I was waiting for it to end towards the last minute of it.

    5. Bruce Springsteen - Kitty's Back
I liked both songs a fair bit but this one won me over a bit more. I feel like the other one is the kind of thing that would need a few more listens for me to get fully into.

    6. Jawbreaker - Kiss The Bottle
I do actually quite like both, but I adore Jawbreaker.

    7. John Adams - Phrygian Gates
I think this is probably a mood based choice more than anything. This track is really pretty and lovely and soothing. The other one is not bad, just not for me at the moment. Also, as has been mentioned, weird match up.

    8. Ratatat - Falcon Jab
I actually really liked both of these tracks quite a bit and I feel like it really could have gone either way for me. Going with the track that was a bit more unique.

well no one's forcing you. kinda weird though that you'd sign up and submit a song with have no inclination to listen to anyone else's.

Well first off I noticed that the name of the band was put in wrong, so that's a bit odd there.

It's nice having the showdown back because it gives me something to listen to while I work on videos and stuff.

    1.
    Eddie - 10pm
    vs.
My Dad Is Dead - The Quiet Man

Like the breath-y quality to the Eddie track, with the jazz flute flutters thrown in. Really nice and relaxed vibe. I always keep half-expecting some sort of rap to come in or a verse, but it just kind of grooves along. Nothing necessarily wrong with it just staying a trance-like sound, but I kind of wish it went to more places. Heh, for the My Dad is Dead song, I immediately looked up and wondered if I clicked on a Talking Heads song by mistake. I really enjoy the chord progression in this one, the clanging guitar really works with the punchy percussion. I like the vocals too. They kind of clash just a little with the vibe of the song but I feel like they work.

Close call, but going with the latter song. It grew on me more as it went along.

    ----

    2.
Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)
    vs.
    Starfunksimples - Turasuba

Love the raw, echoey sound of the guitar in the Dawn Penn track. Really keeps the track going. I just wish there was more energy to the vocals. I get the vibe that they're going for against the hooky guitar, but it feels just a little too lifeless and echoey for me. The trumpet livens things up, though. For the second track... Are those woodwinds playing against the wubby guitar sound? Such a weird combination. The heavy guitar sound has never really been my thing in general, so I don't enjoy it as much when it's just them. They do hit some nice grooves, however (like around the 3:00 mark). I don't know, I like how it builds and the instrumentation is interesting and unique... It's a little uneven.

Not in love with either but going with the weirdo instrumentation.

    ----

    3.
Tadeusz Klimonda - Creme De Menthe
    vs.
Takeshi Terauchi & the Bunnys - Kanjincho

The first track just feels like classic 1970s disco funk to me. It's got the bass, it's got the rising strings, it's got the chord progression. Good stuff, in general. The only thing I wonder about it is whether it's too paint-by-numbers. I feel like I've heard a lot of songs like this one by now and I'm struggling to find something that stands out about it. For the second track, I had such a goofy grin on my face when the surfs-up guitar started going through its first couple of riffs. The general vibe is very familiar to me, but the guitar work just lifts this song up so much. You can just picture the guitarist moving his hands up and down those frets during those licks. Great stuff.

    ----

    4.
Lee Hazlewood - My Autumn's Done Come
    vs.
Madlib and J Dilla - The Message

Haha, the album cover of the Lee Hazlewood track is hilarious to me. That upward look he gives.

The song reminds me a lot of all that pre-Elvis 1950s crooner stuff I would hear on the oldies station when I was little. I enjoy the nostalgia and old style of it the most, but other than that, it's a little on the dull side for me. The melody droops downward so much I kind of feel like I'm lulling off to sleep. For the Madlib and J Dilla, I find myself wanting a little more from the background hook, but the flow of the lyrics makes it up for me. They do a good job of pushing through but mixing in offbeats and stuff to keep me on my toes. Some of the vocals feel a little muddled in places, however. Still, a nice solid track.

    ----

    5.
    Kate Tempest - Circles
    vs.
    Bruce Springsteen - Kitty's Back

Much like the last song, I really like the flow of the Kate Tempest vocals. There's a sort of lilt to the syncopation, double-timing in the second half of most lyrics. I also like how it pushes straight through to the chorus. The synth background generally works for me, although I always find the chorus a little discordant. They do a lot of fun tricky stuff with the background stuff, which is fun. On the Springsteen track, I like the opening guitar section. The vocals work for me, and really love how it builds to the chorus. They play with the tempo a lot in this number, so it sometimes almost feels like a medley of several individual songs. Then, an organ solo? Yeesh, Springsteen.

Was honestly expecting to vote for Kate Tempest when I listened to it but The Boss won me over. Really enjoyed both.

    ----

    6.
    Jawbreaker - Kiss The Bottle
    vs.
    Dr. Dog - Unbearable Why

The Jawbreaker track didn't get off to a good first impression for me... It's just so discordant. It definitely picks up for me when the vocals come in and the guitars drives a little more. The vocals have the raspy quality that this kind of song needs. Weird. The Dr. Dog song also got on the wrong foot for me. That opening vocal just kind of hits you. But then when the descending piano and the background chorus come in, the vocals start working for me. I like the way they layer the vocals in general... Feels a little Beach Boys'ish in terms of the layering sometimes (in a good way). This song kept getting better and better for me throughout.

    ----

    7.
Urbangarde - One Piece Double Suicide
    vs.
    John Adams - Phrygian Gates

What the hell. How do you guys even find this stuff? Anyway, I have to say one of my secret shames is my fondness for this kind of happy hardcore dance music. Maybe I have just played too many Japanese video games, but stuff like the Urbangarde track is so much fun. I thought the John Adams piano track was fine. I don't know, I've just never been a solo piano guy in general, so this song is tough for me. I can appreciate the technical skill and the musical phrasing but it's just a little too dry for me.

    ----

    8.
    Ratatat - Falcon Jab
    vs.
Frank Turner - If Ever I Stray

What is that percussion? A zither? A washboard? Nice way to start the Ratatat track. Swipe-swipe-swipe-swipe-swipe. Wow, this song really goes places in general. Gets really funky, then kind of grindy and electronic. It's a very interesting fusion of different styles and I dig it. The Frank Turner song sounds like someone, but I can't put my finger on it. It starts out kind of blah, but it picks up more when he starts exclaiming his lyrics and hits the big chorus. He does a good job in general mixing in his regular singing with the manic stuff. Some people pull off that stuff well. Thought this one got better and better as it went along.

Another super-super close call, but am gonna go with the more oddball song again. Both were great.

    4. The Message

    5. Kate Tempest - Circles

    1.Eddie - 10pm
I can see this one making it far...the other one I didn't like so much

    2. Dawn Penn - You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)
    This round ...zzzzz

3.Tadeusz Klimonda - Creme De Menthe
I didn't like either so I guess the first one

    4-Lee Hazlewood - My Autumn's Done Come
A bit better but still can't say I like these two

    5- Bruce Springsteen - Kitty's Back
The first one is kind of neat but I can't say I really liked it, the Springsteen track was a pretty enjoyable listen

    6-Dr. Dog - Unbearable Why
I like the sound of the second one better and that's about what made it win

7-Urbangarde - One Piece Double Suicide
    Weirdest match-up

    8-Ratatat - Falcon Jab
Tough choice as both were pretty good and it’s a good thing you don’t have to vote for the video
