ok let's vote before I pass out

    Match #1
Mega Man X - “Boomer Kuwanger”
    vs.
The Neverhood - “Battle of Robot Bill”
(this was pretty easy, MM music rocks and the quirky vibe of the latter just couldn't match)

    Match #2
    Sonic Spinball - “Lava Powerhouse”
    vs.
Kirby's Return to Dreamland - “Icy Cavern”
(I have a bad feeling I'll be the only one voting for this. I love the tension felt by the Kirby track, although Spinball definitely gives it a run for its money)

    Match #3
    Xenoblade Chronicles – “Gaur Plains”
    vs.
    VVVVVV - “Positive Force”
(the chiptunes of the latter are always a funky enjoyable listen, but godDAMN that xenoblade track... so wistful and harmonious)

    Match #4
    Pokémon Blue/Red - “Lavender Town”
    vs.
    Punch-Out!! - "Staff Roll"
(Lavender Town is obviously quite well-known, and it's for a reason: it sets a nice, eerie mood. The Punch Out track is just kind of a mediocre rock track... nothing makes it really stand out)

    Match #5
    Gremlins 2 - “T.V. Set”
    vs.
Retro City Rampage - “Title Song”
(very, very hard match-up... gremlins 2 is fun, but RCR is just ever so much more fun especially in how it builds in frenetic activity towards the end, augh love it)

    Match #6
Journey to Silius - “Stage 2 (Underground Concourse)”
    vs,
Red Dead Redemption - “Far Away”
(look, RDR is nice for the game it's for but in terms of pure VGM... come on this one is easy)

    Match #7
Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?! - “Party in the Clouds”
    vs.
Little Big Adventure - “Funky Town”
(wow, an AT game having an amazing 16-bit-based soundtrack?! no wayyyyy... at least the LBA track lives up to its title, but well it got sadly slammed)

    Match #8
Dragon Age: Origins - “I Am the One”
    vs.
    Shovel Knight – “The Defender”
(easiest match-up of the round... dragon age is a snoozefest while the shovel knight is just... I should buy shovel knight)

man saturday is too long away I want moar

    1. Mega Man X - Boomer Kuwanger
Always been a favorite MM song. That entire game has amazing music, I would put it right behind 2 and 3 in terms of MM soundtracks. Great choice, whoever picked this.

    2. Kirby's Return to Dreamland - Icy Cavern
Fun song. I've never played this game (yet) but this music makes me want to. It sounds very Kirby-esque.

    3. VVVVVV - Positive Force
WHOEVER NOMINATED THIS IS THE SHIT! I love this game, and the music is great. I actually bought the whole soundtrack and have it on my iTunes.
Very honorable mention to the Xenoblade song, though. I really want to pick that game up.

    4. Punch-Out!! - Staff Roll
Another to whoever nominated this. I love the Wii Punch-Out!! game, and this is a great closing track.

    5. Gremlins 2 - TV Set
Oh man, this was a tough choice. Ultimately I went with Gremlins, because I remember better tracks from RCR than this one. Still a good tune though. Dat chiptune

    6. Journey to Silius - Stage 2
PFFFFFFFFFFFFFT this was easy. I love the music in this game. One of Sunsoft's finest. Fun fact: I can play this song on guitar. Not that it's that difficult.

    7. Adventure Time
This is a fun track. I like the 8-bit backing.

    8. Shovel Knight
Jesus Fuck I want this game. Easy choice.

    1. Mega Man X - “Boomer Kuwanger”
    2. Sonic Spinball - “Lava Powerhouse”
    3. Xenoblade Chronicles – “Gaur Plains”
    4. Punch-Out!! - "Staff Roll"
    5. Retro City Rampage - “Title Song”
    6. Red Dead Redemption - “Far Away”
    7. Little Big Adventure - “Funky Town”
    8. Dragon Age: Origins - “I Am the One”

Only match I had a tough time choosing between in this round was “Stage 2 (Underground Concourse)” vs. "Far Away". Because I've listened to every track already I feel like I won't have as much to really say about them. Also, just a weird side note, does anyone else think “Boomer Kuwanger” sounds a lot like the porno music from the Futurama ep "A Big Ball of Garbage" (For those who can't remember the scene, I'm talking about the end of the video Professor Farnsworth shows the crew when the two scientists suddenly begin to strip).

Fave tracks of the round? “Gaur Plains”, "Staff Roll", “Stage 2 (Underground Concourse)”, "Far Away" and “Funky Town”.

Tracks I didn't particularly care for very much? Just “T.V. Set”, I guess. I also didn't really like "Positive Force" very much when I first heard it upon submission but listening to it again it's not that bad.

I'd be lying if I said there weren't several tracks that I looked at upon receiving them and thought "Oh, for fuck's sake".

maybe i'm missing something here, but 46 songs in round 1 will give you 23 in round 2, and 23 is an odd number. you could make one of those a 3 song match-up, but that's kind of unfair to those songs and anyway leaves you with the same problem in round 3 (11 songs). it's probably easiest to just add two more songs and make it 48 > 24 > 12 > 6 > and a 3 song final

Mega Man X - Boomer Kuwanger
    v
The Neverhood - Battle of Robot Bill
Neverhood has an enjoyable and catchy vibe to it. A very fun song helped by the instruments.

    Sonic Spinball - Lava Powerhouse
    v
Kirby's Return to Dreamland - Icy Cavern
Powerhouse definitely has that music you'd imagine hearing when playing pinball and it has that calm but epic demeanor about it. Icy Cavern has an enjoyable use of the instruments to create what you'd expect from an ice world in Kirby (anyone remember that Crystal Shards world with snow? Strikes me as a song you'd hear in that level). A tough one...Powerhouse is the one I dig the most out of the two though.

    Xenoblade Chronicles - Gaur Plains
    v
    VVVVVVV - Positive Force
Positive Force is a very enjoyable song, especially for its time but Gaur Plains feels way too engaging to be rejected. The harmonious but pumping nature of this song makes it an epic.

    Pokémon - Lavender Town
    v
    Punch Out!!! - Staff Roll
I've listened to Lavender Town many times throughout my life. The song is still very eerie considering everything, especially the town's setting and the events that took place there. For that to be in a Pokémon game and in glorious 8-bit makes it a fantastic creepy track. Punch-Out!!! Staff Roll is certainly a very calm and catchy tune but Lavender Town just sticks out more. Maybe a little biased here but hey ho!

    Gremlins 2 - TV Set
    v
Retro City Rampage - "Title Song"
TV Set is a fun and awkward little song but it does seem to get repetitive, doesn't it? Retro City on the other hand is rockin' from the get go!

Journey to Silius - Stage 2 (Underground Concourse)
    v
Red Dead Redemption - Far Away
Not a big fan of VGM with lyrics, and compared to the very mysterious atmosphere driven track it faces Far Away does seem to fall short.

Adventure Time - Party in the Clouds
    v
Little Big Adventure - Funky Town
Adventure Time the surprise of the showdown so far. It has a lot of energy in it that is enjoyable to listen to. Funky Town is certainly funky and somewhat relaxing but I do find it a little bit boring compared to Party in the Clouds.

Dragon Age: Origins - 'I Am The One'
    v
    Shovel Knight - The Defender
It actually starts off a bit messy for me, but beyond that wow what a track. I Am The One is alright, but I feel it pales in comparison to The Defender.

#1 The Neverhood - “Battle of Robot Bill”
Haaarrrrd. Mega Man rocks, man, but the Neverhood one sounds really cool

#2 Kirby's Return to Dreamland - “Icy Cavern”
    So delightfully Kirby (>'O')>

    #3 VVVVVV - “Positive Force”
I feel like I need to meet this game. Recommended? Xenoblade has some great atmosphere, though. Maybe I should meet that game as well.

    #4 Pokémon Blue/Red - “Lavender Town”
This music made me nervous. I like when VGM does that.

    #5 Gremlins 2 - “T.V. Set”
It's like NES metal vs NES metal I enjoyed Gremlins more, though, rocking that NES sound-chip. Which brings me to

#6 Journey to Silius - “Stage 2 (Underground Concourse)”
Daaamn how did Sunsoft get this kinda sound way back then?
The Far Away track sets a great mood for the game, though.

#7 Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?! - “Party in the Clouds”
Little Big Adventure, such a great classic from the past. But I reeaally enjoyed the Adventure Time track! I don't have a 3DS, but how does that Wii U dungeons game compare to this one?

#8 Shovel Knight – “The Defender”
Is the european release date known yet?! I'm standing here waiting!

1 & 3 were the hardest for me

Didn't take that into account. To be honest I've been so sick since Sunday I kind of just stopped giving a shit.

HERE'S YOUR CHANCE TO PICK ANOTHER SONG FOLKS! FIRST COME FIRST SERVE! 1 EXTRA SONG PER PERSON! WE JUST NEED 2!

Edit: That was fast. @Dobbie and @Matty both at the same time within moments of me posting this.

1- The Neverhood - “Battle of Robot Bill” - That Megaman track is pretty bad, so was the other one but I found it a bit more original.
2- Kirby's Return to Dreamland - “Icy Cavern”
    3-Xenoblade Chronicles – “Gaur Plains”
4-Pokémon Blue/Red - “Lavender Town” - I had a strong feeling someone was gonna choose this song. I'd say it's a bit too popular for this but anyway it was better than the Punch Out! track. There's lots of better song in that game.
5- Gremlins 2 - “T.V. Set” - Hard to choose between those 2, found this one a bit better
6- Journey to Silius - “Stage 2 (Underground Concourse)” - The other one was sleep inducing
7- Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?! - “Party in the Clouds” - That's my favorite so far
8- Dragon Age: Origins - “I Am the One” - The appeal for Shovel Knight is a mystery to me. Found the other track a bit better.

    Match #1
The Neverhood - “Battle of Robot Bill”
MM track is all right but doesn't really stand out for me. Battle of Robot Bill has some rockin' progression to it despite sounding a bit odd.

    Match #2
Kirby's Return to Dreamland - “Icy Cavern”
Lava Powerhouse's instrumentation very vaguely reminds me of a track from the Genesis Beavis & Butthead game. However, I have a really hard time denying high BPM Kirby music.

    Match #3
    VVVVVV - “Positive Force”
I love VVVVVV's soundtrack...appropriately titled PPPPPP and containing tracks that start with the letter "P." Discovered this through GFF a few years ago, entire soundtrack makes me happy. Gaur Plains is wonderful, though. It feels like the perfect music for running around on the field, and I love the underlying bass and drum work.

    Match #4
    Pokémon Blue/Red - “Lavender Town”
Not super into Staff Roll. It's all right, and certainly inoffensive, but it doesn't do a whole lot for me. Lavendar Town will forever creep me out, but that's what's great about it. It creates the appropriate atmosphere for the area despite being so simple.

    Match #5
    Gremlins 2 - “T.V. Set”
Both of these tracks are not my faves from those particular soundtracks, but they're both still all right, moreso T.V. Set. Ventilation Shaft is my fave from Gremlins 2, but I love the instrumentation and chiptuney goodness that T.V. Set brings. Dat bass. That said, I have played the shit out of Retro City Rampage and loved it. The title song was the one I had heard the least because I didn't have to spend much time in the menus to do what I wanted. I love the lead-in, but the rest of it loses my attention.

    Match #6
Journey to Silius - “Stage 2 (Underground Concourse)”
The Journey to Silius track is a favorite of mine, so I know it quite well. The sound quality is amazing. Sunsoft always has such awesome soundtracks for their games. As soon as Far Away started up in-game I almost lost it. The entire sequence leading to its use is incredible and I was totally immersed in it. Still, as a standalone VGM track, I much prefer Stage 2.

    Match #7
Little Big Adventure - “Funky Town”
Damn it, this one was fucking hard. As said earlier, VIRT. I LOVE. He did a great job on the whole soundtrack, especially the Ice Kingdom music. Party in the Clouds really feels like some old school RPG battle music which is part of why I enjoy it so much. But Funky Town is so, so good and I love me some funk music. I much prefer listening to Funky Town on repeat at the moment.

    Match #8
    Shovel Knight – “The Defender”
I really like Inon Zur but I rarely ever am interested in credits songs. This one was actually very pretty, and hit the right tone for the end of that game, but is not keeping my attention. The Defender has good energy and tension to it, plus that intro is great. The instrumentation bugs me a little at some points but overall I prefer it.

I have a feeling voting is going to be even more painful than in the regular showdown for me.

    1. The Neverhood - “Battle of Robot Bill”

The Mega Man X song is just a classic. I really don't have anything to say about it. The whole MMX soundtrack is pretty untouchable. However, I have to vote for The Neverhood... Whoever nominated it gets major props from me. I first heard it on Ray Barnholt's old "The Sound Test" podcast he did back at 1up.com and loved it. Not familiar with the game at all, but definitely want to learn more about it.

    2. Kirby's Return to Dreamland - “Icy Cavern”

I don't remember that much notable music from Sonic Spinball... I played it all the way through exactly once and never want to do it again. This track is nice, though. Has a nice grooving Genesis bassline. I have to admit, this matchup is a little unfair because I have a natural bias toward voting for Kirby music. Never played this particular game and am not that familiar with the soundtrack, but this song makes me want to check it out. Nice driving Kirby beat... I wish the samples were a little better, though... That trumpet... Yeesh.

    3. Xenoblade Chronicles – “Gaur Plains”

I didn't even re-listen to the Xenoblade track. I know it by heart. Xenoblade is the only soundtrack I've ever imported from Japan and every penny was well spent. I will say, I'm just a little tired of Gaur Plains, as that is the go-to track that everyone picks. I think there are 5 or so songs I think I prefer more now, but some of that might be from getting tired of it. You'd think all of this gushing for Xenoblade means I nominated this, but for once, I resisted. For VVVVVV, I always have trouble listening to the main themes (including this one) without thinking of Balrog's theme from Street Fighter. The melodies are so similar to me. Not that that's a bad thing. I really love this song... It's just something that always gets to me when I listen to it.

    4. Punch-Out!! - "Staff Roll"

Lavender Town has never done anything for me. It is an interesting song because of that whole rumor legend about Japanese kids committing suicide because of it, but eh. The Game Boy chipset is a little too harsh for me to feel creeped out by it. The Punch-Out Wii song basically wins by default. I've never played this game (like Kirby, its on my list of missed Wii games), but am familiar with the soundtrack. There are a couple of other songs (boxer themes mostly) that I like more, but I'm happy to see this song was nominated. I feel like this track kind of captures the general feel of Little Mac as a champion and stuff.

    5. Gremlins 2 - “T.V. Set”

I am so frickin' happy this Gremlins 2 track was nominated. Gave me the biggest smile of the list. It's a song literally no one ever talks about, but has a lot of that great Sunsoft 8-bit greatness. I've only played the game a little but remember it to be pretty good... Something I probably need to track down again. I've always really liked the Retro City Rampage song... Really reminds me of the Konami soundtrack for the original TMNT game. Nice grindy bassline and stuff.

    6. Journey to Silius - “Stage 2 (Underground Concourse)”

I was so going to call foul if this were the Stage 1 song. I like this more downbeat variation of the theme, as well as that quick one-two-three-four-five bassline. It's always surprising to me when the NES puts out such a rich sound, as this track demonstrates. For the Red Dead Redemption track, I wish I could like it more because it really is well-produced... The vocals are just so Simon and Garfunkel-y, and those kinds of vocals just do nothing for me. I feel kind of bad for not digging this one more because the guitar work is great.

    7. Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?! - “Party in the Clouds”

Oh, virt, you are such a god among men. I feel like I need to do another line of cocaine after listening to his music. This track is just basically more fast-paced 8-bit goodness. Liked this one a lot. I'm a little familiar with Little Big Adventure as a game (I think it's European-made? or Canadian?), but not the soundtrack. The song itself is solid enough, I suppose. Kind of industrial, kind of funky bass. Interesting sound... Not a combo you hear together much.

    8. Shovel Knight – “The Defender”

The Dragon Age track is some nice fantasy vocal stuff. The strings are nice and the vocals have an airy quality to them that is appealing. It doesn't stand out to me compared to other songs in a similar ilk. For Shovel Knight, I'm saving myself until I play the game to listen to the whole soundtrack... But this song is really nice. Very upbeat, almost uplifting in its melody. Solid stuff.

Wow, voted for way too much energetic 8-bit stuff in this back half of voting.

    1. Boomer Kuwanger. The grittiness of Robot Bill’s theme sounds cool, but Boomer’s melody just sounds so catchy.

    2. Lava Powerhouse. God, that base reminds me of something I’ve heard in the early 2000’s, can’t remember though. Anyway, both are good songs, but I just like Lava’s base over the energenic Kirby sound.

    3. Positive Force. Oh God was this tough. As much as I love the orchestration for Gaul, Positive Force just barely beats it (VVVVVV’s soundtrack is just hypnotizing whenever I play it).

    4. Lavender Town. Punch Out’s Staff Role just sounds like a generic fighting track. Lavender Town just has so many memories for me, and is just a great, creepy theme.

    5. T.V. Set.

    6. Far Away.

    7. Party In the Clouds.

    8. The Defender.

1.The Neverhood - “Battle of Robot Bill”
Boomer Kuwanger is the kind of song I can enjoy while playing a game. Battle of Robot Bil is a song that I would not only enjoy playing to, but that I enjoyed as a song on its own.

    2. Sonic Spinball - “Lava Powerhouse”
Couldn't really get into Icy Cavern, but I really enjoyed this.

    3. Xenoblade Chronicles – “Gaur Plains”
Really enjoyed this, it fits really well in with the video game music I most prefer.

    4. Pokémon Blue/Red - “Lavender Town”
Staff Roll was pretty boring, to be honest. Not bad, just not interesting. Obviously not the case with Lavender Town.

    5. Retro City Rampage - “Title Song”
Both songs were a lot of fun. Liked this one better.

    6. Red Dead Redemption - “Far Away”
Once again, this is a case of would enjoy playing to it vs would enjoy listening to it.

    7. Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?! - “Party in the Clouds”
I really enjoyed both of these but just couldn't resist this one, it's so much fun.

    8. Dragon Age: Origins - “I Am the One”
Didn't absolutely love either song, but I found I Am The One to be really pretty. Didn't anticipate my vote going for this because even though I enjoy playing Dragon Age, the soundtrack isn't anything special for me. Perhaps it is striking me in a certain mood more than the other one?

I agree. While I do like the song that was nominated, there are other tracks from the game I like more. I actually really like this theme:

That whole soundtrack is glorious... One of the hidden gems OSTs on the Wii. I think having so many different boxers from all around the world gave them a good license to do a lot of crazy styles and stuff. The original NES game had a really limited number of songs, so it's awesome that Next Level Games took the effort to make each boxer feel even more unique than they are already.

    Match #1
Mega Man X - “Boomer Kuwanger” - dripping with tension, the skittering synth notes that initiate the track and the harsh key stabs give way to much more inviting synth melodies and expressive drum fills. it's like an embrace of adventure, despite the possibility (and likelihood) of danger. very fitting, initially uneasy but very soon energized.
    vs.
The Neverhood - “Battle of Robot Bill” - an ethereal woodland freakout, oblong and quirky, full of very malleable textures. good-natured, playfully epic. it's like bite-sized goofball prog. what you'd expect from a Doug TenNappel project really. that's a good thing.

    point goes to The Neverhood.

    Match #2
Sonic Spinball - “Lava Powerhouse” - texturally harsh and gnarled, constantly bubbling under like the constantly threatening pools of acid that awaited you to slip up on one of those flippers. fittingly restless and splattered in dark sounds, cold kick drums and a main synth line that sounds like a calculated musical Tesla coil. there's this sound that sounds like a rhythmic iron-lung in there, you know the one, that really breathy one. I love that. this music really does evoke the sense of being a guinea pig in a warped experiment, which is what Spinball seems like.
    vs.
Kirby's Return to Dreamland - “Icy Cavern” - fittingly redundant but pleasant, high energy and full of constantly shifting focal instruments to supply the melodies. keeps pace and uses many different mixes of colors and different brushes to place them on the canvas. this is a bad analogy. fun tune, keeps my interest.

    point goes to Sonic Spinball.

    Match #3
Xenoblade Chronicles – “Gaur Plains” - simultaneously sweeping and danceable, without seeming ridiculous. high-octane beauty. this could be a tournament highlight. I've gotta get this fucking game already.
    vs.
VVVVVV - “Positive Force” - nothing about this stands out to me. it's fine, decent melodies and all that but I can't really pick out particular high-points.

    easy, Xenoblade.

    Match #4
Pokémon Blue/Red - “Lavender Town” - somebody hold me.
    vs.
Punch-Out!! - "Staff Roll" - I'm half-expecting Michael Stipe to start singing any minute now. a fine rock instrumental, with or without vidya game accompaniment. love the smooth piano and rhythm guitar, not crazy about the cheesy lead and organ noodling.

boring/predictable pick but eh, Pokemon Blue/Red.

    Match #5
Gremlins 2 - “T.V. Set” - just ace chiptune, masterfully textured, not a sound outta place here. exciting and moody, full of so much more depth than one would expect to emit from a NES chip. using those limitations.
    vs.
Retro City Rampage - “Title Song” - bit-crushed 80s cheese metal. cool soaring guitar solos, pounding thrash percussion. the shredding bit around 1:30 is so fiery and unexpected. chiptune shredding. good stuff.

so damn hard, but I'm going Gremlins 2.

    Match #6
Journey to Silius - “Stage 2 (Underground Concourse)” - see Gremlins 2. seriously, Sunsoft had this incredible ear for what textures fit where and when. they didn't use that chip as an instrument, it's practically a sonic weapon. this is as intense and emotional as many legitimate sci-fi movie soundtracks. this muster every ounce of the tension of danger lurking around every corner and the concept of survival. I'd say a modernized version of this would be cool, real instrumentation and all, but it would almost detract from the glory of the original. to achieve this with the NES is astounding.
    vs,
Red Dead Redemption - “Far Away” - the stuff heart-breaking credit sequences are made of, a beautiful and somber acoustic tune that provides evidence of the desire for movie-like scope from a game like RDR. the entire track, both in hushed guitar and haunting whisper of the vocals, is spookily quiet, and seems to act as a musical epitaph. gripping by not attempting to pull you in. when people whisper, you lean in to hear. and in this case it's hard not to keep leaning closer and closer.

one of the toughest matches so far, but point goes to Journey to Silius.

    Match #7
Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?! - “Party in the Clouds” - Anamanaguchi-esque chip-rock, definitely captures that retro quality whilst achieving a fuller sound. I have to imagine the soundtrack is the best part of this game, not that licensed games have to be shitty, but this is an expression of real love and care being put into the soundtrack regardless of what it's attached to. every color of the rainbow, soaring across the sky in pixels. s'pretty.
    vs.
Little Big Adventure - “Funky Town” - cave-dweller funk, there's something very calculated and industrial about the percussion and some of the backing instruments but it more supports this bizarre funk tune than compromises it. the grooves obviously slip into the brain pretty immediately, but the distorted guitar blasts and steady mechanical drumming is what sells this for me. it's pleasingly anachronistic in contrast of tone and texture.

point goes to Little Big Adventure.

    Match #8
Dragon Age: Origins - “I Am the One” - not gonna lie, was expecting generic "epic" sweeping string score but to my shock this is far more nuanced. the strings delicately flutter and cry, light flourishes helping elevate the large strings in the forefront, which sound spiritual and as though they're attempting to lift something.like attempting to restore life, very pure, yet dripping with a slight despair. not gonna lie though, as this built I began thinking more and more of Seal's "Kiss From a Rose". I'll let you decide whether this is good or bad. either way, this was a shocker. so many imitations come around you can forget that "sweeping movie-like score" is not a pejorative.
    vs.
Shovel Knight – “The Defender” - I wish I had more to say about this. I love the little "dun da da!" part with the lead synth at :26, where the synth elevates, and then calls back in higher pitch. that's lovely, and alot of this seems like the product of old techniques being used in an era where they're no longer such a foreign tool for musical creation as the NES chip was in it's advent. it's very simultaneously then/now. very fun and energetic, feels like a perfect boss tune for Mega Man, had those games given bosses individual themes.

tough pick, but I think I'll go Shovel Knight.
