    The Simpsons Vs. Family Guy

You know the thread where we voted for Simpsons and South Park-episodes with similar plots which one was best?
Well, why not one with Family Guy? Several plots they have have either been made before or after The Simpsons.
I'll start with some classic episodes at first.

There's No Disgrace Like Home VS. I Never Met The Dead Man

    Simpsons: 0
    Family Guy: 0
SIMILARITY: Both episodes are about getting rid of the TV to create more quality time with the family.

The Family Guy-episode is funny, but I've always found it very overrated while the Simpsons-episode is pretty underrated, so the choice was not hard.

Never seen or heard of the Family Guy episode, so I'll pass on this first one.

After just rewatching both episodes back-to-back I'll probably vote for the Simpsons. Both episodes are funny but "There's No Disgrace Like Home" just feels like an overall better written episode. Some of the characters' personalities are a little odd, but it was the first season. If this episode was done a few seasons later, Marge would be the one who is ashamed of the family. Still I could see the Homer from seasons 2-8 wanting to better his family after realizing how dysfunctional they are (which is why I'm not crazy about the Sherry Bobbins episode). Maybe he wouldn't pawn the TV but what's so great about many of these season 1 episodes is just how real they seem. I'm so invested in the story that everything just feels so natural despite the fact that many of the characters are still in their early stages. "There's No Disgrace Like Home" is also probably one of the funniest episodes of the season, nicely satirizing the "ideal family" image that was seen in so many sitcoms prior to the Simpsons. And then there's the electric shock scene which is just classic and every bit as funny as I imagine it was back in 1990. Just brilliant stuff. 5/5

That's not to take away how good "I Never Met the Dead Man" is though. Family Guy had one hell of a good first season, even if the humour never reaches classic Simpsons quality. Jokes are abundant and for the most part quite funny. The characters are still in their early stages but in a lot of ways, this is a good thing. Peter is very likeable throughout, even if he's very much a clone of Homer. A TV obsessed, idiot who loves his family, where have I heard that one before. Still they both have their own shades of man-child intelligence and while Peter isn't the most human character, he's very enjoyable to watch in these earlier seasons. One thing I especially like is how serious Lois takes Peter's homemade, cardboard TV thing. She treats it like any real wife would, which is that her husband has lost it. It's resolved a little too quickly but little moments like that would never happen in the Family Guy of today. The pacing isn't always the best and I think there were a few too many cutaways, but overall it's a fun episode. 4/5 (by Family Guy standards)

Season 1: The humble beginnings -- Seasons 2-8: The classic era -- Season 9: The first season where noticeable flaws began to appear -- Season 10: The last decent season -- Season 11: The first BAD season -- Season 12: The last season with episodes worth watching -- Seasons 13-Present: Zombie Simpsons

That Family Guy episode is actually okay'ish... but The Simpsons is beast. Don't expect me to vote for a FG episode over the Simpsons..... but there's a certain one where I'll vote for FG instead which is a really rare occasion.

I've barely watched any Family Guy episodes, and it's not really fair for me to vote for The Simpsons every time without even watching the Family Guy episode, so I'll sit out unless a match comes along where I've seen both.

I really hate the subplot from The Man Who Grew Too Much, though.

I'll go with Family Guy. While they there cleverly satirize pro-abstinence propaganda, The Simpsons just had finger puppets fucking around just... because? When you think about it, isn't it very out-of-character of Marge to bring Homer to the education just to show them two as puppets having sex??

A subplot vs. an entire episode isn't a fair matchup, IMO.

I just thought the sub-plot to The Man Who Grew Too Much was so memorably horrible I wanted to see if people still really still the Family Guy-version is worse or not.

I'd probably vote for the Family Guy episode on the basis that it is a whole episode, while very little happens in the subplot. If I were basing this on "The Man Who Grew Too Much" as a whole, I would vote for The Man Who Grew Too Much.

This was not a very good pick when I think about it. I'll start with some other two episodes instead.

I couldn't another one good enough to sum up the episode. Google only showed lots of pictures from Life Of Brian instead!

I'm curious to see if there is any matchup in which I will vote for Family Guy. Dog of Death is mediocre for the classic era but Dog Gone is pretty annoying throughout.

Just looking at that picture makes me want to vote for The Simpsons. I haven't seen the Family Guy episode, though, so I won't.

EDIT: Nah, Dog of Death is just too good. There's no way Family Guy could compete with the emotion in that episode.

I came here to R and R other animated shows. The forums I used to go to became inactive, so I'm here now.

I'll throw my vote here as well.

    The Simpsons: 5
    Family Guy: 0

Family Guy's eighth season, aside from some flaws, was not too bad, but when it comes to classic Simpsons-episodes, most of them still beat out very many Family Guy-episodes. And I really like "Dog Gone" a whole lot, but you just can't beat this wonderful:
"Well, he's got all the money in the world, but there's one thing I he can't buy." "What's that?" "A DINOSAUR."
