In some countries we absolutely do not, and in others it's much closer to equal but there are still problems, e.g. wage gap between two people doing the exact same amount of the same work, entirely based on gender. I cannot bring myself to describe myself as "not a feminist", and if I were a man, I would feel very uncomfortable about saying that because of the implications that make the statement reliant on further justification. Technically, if you believe that men and women should have equal rights, you are a feminist. It's that simple. (I prefer "egalitarian", which includes other groups as well.) I'm not going to tweak out on anyone for saying that they thought men and women had equal rights, especially not being clear on the laws where anyone else lives, but the fact is that you would be wrong for a few reasons. As long as people are seeking equal treatment where relevant, and not preaching superiority, I'm onboard. The people you necessarily think of as feminists are obviously extreme in their views by nature of the fact that you think of them as feminists before anything else.

    I hate that @hammster hasn't done a list.

this bugs me so much. I hate that basic equal rights seems to need a label as though it's some sort of minority

I'm not a feminist, because I'm not rooting exclusively for women. Everyone should have the same rights, and labeling that "feminist" is missing the point entirely

I do hate that, but according to the original concept of feminism that would make you a feminist. A lot of people here seem to be confused about what feminism is. I did say that I hate having to state that I'm a feminist or else explain in many more words that actually I'm just not an asshole - listing all the ways in which I'm not an asshole, which seems moot when the conversation is about civil rights. I hate to be aligned with the stupid fucks who think women are better than men, but since that is not the definition of feminism, I believe that "feminist" needs defending as a sociological term which originated from extreme disadvantage which still exists in the world today. (I study sociology, which is the context I use it in.) The problem is that "feminist" is often used to define a person as intolerant, which is opposite to its academic intention.

Besides, I would have been more specific in that what I actually hate is feminists (And lesbians for that matter) who blanket cover men in general as the worst thing on the planet and hate on them all with a blind rage calling them all oppressors and rapists. I agree with the concept of men and women being treated as equals but I don't agree with the feminists who don't strive for equality, but rather for the shoe to be on the other foot and for them to be treated in a higher regard than men are to begin with. You know, basically becoming the thing they hate.

Thank you Shaun and parklife. Those aren't feminists; they're female supremacists.

No the license to kill was a joke. Women already have equal rights so there is no point in feminists anymore.

Read some more about it, please. It has to do with how women are being treated. (Objectification, rape culture, sexual harrasment, patriarchy)
Most people who hate feminism do it because they don't know how these things are a problem. Please read about it.

(So, was it a joke, or... what? I've seen worse so I thought I might as well reply)

While I would say that it does indeed happen to men too it doesn't happen on anywhere near as big a scale.

So you're telling a man has never been raped, objectified or harassed.

I was using your post as reference against Insomnia's argument about men "never being raped, objectified" etc.

    I thought that was clear

Find out what "Rape Culture" means
    Perhaps by googling?

HINT: It means women get blamed for being raped.

I've been at work all day so I'm unwilling to go into any further details about the similarities and differences between problems that certain humans face. The complexity of wording involved would just walk me into a hole with someone for missing something out. These videos talk about some of that stuff, for instance social and media attitudes to women, and the problems associated with shoehorning people into certain types of behaviour. The second one uses the example of "be a man". Believe me, I know what men can go through and it's equally bullshit. I can see how in some cases, women's rights have been given higher consideration than men's, but it happens in both directions and I find it really fucking pointless to go round in circles about which groups have been persecuted by who, how much and how often it still happens. Accept that people of all kinds can be disadvantaged depending on the situation.

Hate is a ridiculously strong word that takes a lot to warrant using against someone.
