Not so much a grammatical question (it's more of a punctuation issue), but what does everyone think of using an exclamation mark and question mark at the end of the same sentence. Example: "WHAT THE?!"

I used to hate this but I've noticed that it's become rather acceptable, especially in postmodern writing.

EDIT: Just so you're clear, the fact that it's a question must first be acknowledged. So the question mark must always come first.

    Interesting. That does make sense.

Something that bugs me is when people call this: / a backslash. It is a slash. THIS: \ is a backslash.

The best English teacher I had at high school hated this too. Every now and then he'd go on a rant about common mistakes he hated. They were great!

Here's a controversial topic: the Oxford comma. I am strongly in favor it. When I write in Newspaper class, we use AP style so we have to omit the Oxford comma. I hate doing that. I think it's just to save as much space as they can.

The Oxford comma is a comma just before 'and' in a list, right? Like:

"To my mother, Ayn Rand, and God"

If that's what it is, I'm in favour.

I had an English teacher who marked me down for using it in a test. I almost went up and contested it, but I didn't think it was worth it.

You should have. Did the teacher say outright which style he/she preferred? If not, you had every right to.

If I recall correctly, the question itself was an unpunctuated statement for which we were asked to insert the necessary punctuation. There was a viable opportunity to place an Oxford comma; I did so and it was marked as wrong. I suspect that it contradicted the marking schedule as she didn't go into specific detail about it. She just circled it, which is teacher shorthand for incorrect here.

Incidentally, I came first in my English class that year, so it wouldn't have mattered too much.

As my papa used to say: always put an Oxford comma, son. Or you're a degenerate.

I hate the Oxford comma. I used to use it but have since been advised by both high school teachers and university lecturers to never use it. I think it's one of those things that's dependent on where you live.

EDIT: Okay, I don't hate it per se, but I'm not a fan of it since being marked down for using it. Quite frankly, I think the Oxford comma is unnecessary and looks better without it.

I think the Oxford comma clears things up. There are some instances where not having it makes sentences more confusing. For example: "I am going to the game with my parents, Bob, and Jill." The lack of the Oxford comma will make it seem that your parents are Bob and Jill.

Or, if you talk like some of my teachers, it can make it look as though you're talking to Bob and going with your parents and Jill.

I don't use the Oxford comma, but examples like the one from @Financial Panther do make a good case for it.

Can you guys use "who" and "whom" correctly? I can tolerate when people use "who when they should use "whom," but when people do it the other way around, I hate it. It shows they're trying to sound intelligent but don't know that the words aren't interchangeable.

I think I can use the two correctly. This reminds me of another topic:
@Financial Panther, do you go completely crazy when you see a sentence ending with a preposition?
