This thread had great potential but only a few users have taken it seriously.

@Financial Panther I don't have a problem with split infinitives because they're easy to use. I actually use them a lot. That said, I'm not a great writer. Comma splices on the other hand need to to die. You shouldn't be afraid to use the full stop more often. If a sentence doesn't sound right with a comma then try splitting it with a full stop and reread it back to yourself. Most of the time when I find myself doing this the full stop is the answer. What do you think of split infinitives, though?

I'm a terrible grammar learner (especially with all the terminologies). I just pace a sentence out exactly like how I say it without bothering much with precise placements of punctuations, or whether it's the correct way of using it.
Also, some of my serious posts don't make grammatical sense due to how hastily I may have typed it.

It doesn't really matter to me as long as it's eligible and not completely retarded. I pretty much post on No Homers the same way you do, Ernie.

    Perfect typo.

When I post on forums I don't form sentences as perfectly as I might try to otherwise. What really annoys me is when people online defend their txtspk with "its the intanet, not a Inglish lssen!" Fair enough if you can't spell, but the idea in society is to make a similar effort to what others extend to you. There is no point posting if it's going to take people a lot of extra effort to discern some meaning from your post, especially in a place such as Youtube where instinct says it probably wasn't interesting enough to bother translating.

I always thought of "e.g." as "eggsample", which made the differentiation pretty easy.

A simple semi-colon can fix a comma splice with ease.

"I am a member of No Homers, it is a shit site."
    becomes
"I am a member of No Homers; it is a shit site."

When I was about thirteen I was obsessed with semi-colons. No one else in my class knew what one was for, and they didn't teach that, but it turned out my intuition was decent as far as fixing comma splices. (I didn't know "comma splice" was the term though.)

I always liked semicolons as well. When I was ten or eleven I always used to get bonus marks from my English teacher for using them when no one else in my class had any idea what they were.

Yep, exactly the same for me. And now that I'm in high school, everybody uses them incorrectly.
@Knightboat, I don't have too much of a problem with split infinitives as long as they don't make the phrase sound too choppy or awkward.

@Financial Panther, would you mind filling everyone in on the difference between "breath" and "breathe". It is one of the more common mistakes I see around here and it annoys me

Oh, that's easy. Breath is a noun. It's what you exhale. "He has bad breath." Breathe is a verb. It's what people do to sustain life. "Those with Ondine's Curse must think to breathe."

I think the serious posts in this thread are funnier than the joke posts.

Nope. It was meant to stop the derailment of the Kinsey scale thread.

    The thread is still breathing.

    By god...

And looking on the past page, the thread's actually talking about grammar.

Alright then. One thing that ticks me off is whenever anyone screws up their there's.

Except it has now been derailed by a discussion about the Leisure Suit Larry Games

    Oh, and while I'm here.
