Whoa, whoa, whoa! The Beatles won? Never guessed that would happen. No-one would have predicted that...

  16. #645

    The Beatles [49] +2
    Queen [-1]-3

    1. The Beatles- As expected
    2. Queen- Can you say overrated?
    3. The Who- I'm ok with this, truthfully shoud be #2
    4. Pink Floyd- As well as this should be #3
    5. David Bowie- A bit too high
    6. Led Zeppelin- Even though they are overblown, about right
    7. The Clash-
    8. The Smiths-
    9. The Kinks- A bit too high
    10. The Rolling Stones- A top ten band even though I'm not a big fan
    11. Fleetwood Mac- A real surprise, I dare say a bit too high even though they are one of my favorites
    12. The Cure- overrated a bit
    13. Kate Bush- Dig her stuff too but still too high up there
    14. Cream- A top ten band easily, silly people
    15. King Crimson- On the outskirts of the top ten for me, but still a good ranking
    16. Joy Division- Overrated
    17. Radiohead-
    18. Elvis Costello- Overrated
    19. Eric Clapton-
    20. New Order-
    21. Black Sabbath- Much higher, you guys blew it on this one
    22. Genesis- Slightly higher for me but still ok
    23. Blur- Eh, not a big fan
    24. PJ Harvey- Overrated
    25. Depeche Mode-
    26. Pulp- A bit too high
    27. Manic Street Preachers-
    28. The Fall- Overrated
    29. U2- If this were 1980-1991 U2 I would disagree. They have been very inconsistent since so I can agree with this
    30. Iron Maiden- A bit out to lunch on this one, much too low
    31. The Slits- I may have been a bit harsh since I helped eliminate them, could be higher I suppose
    32. Elton John- Ridiculous
    33. Deep Purple- Will this band ever get it's due? They still put younger bands to shame even today
    34. The Jam- I guess so
    35. The Stone Roses- Surprised they aren't higher up
    36. The Libertines- Meh, lower I guess
    37. Echo and the Bunnymen- Lower
38: Dire Straits- Could be higher up, Love Over Gold and Making Movies are stellar to go along with the more familiar debut and Brothers In Arms
    39: The Zombies-
    40. T Rex- Still overrated
    41. Yes- Another personal favorite, could be higher up but this ranking is understandable
    42. Arctic Monkeys- Who?
    43. The Buzzcocks- Another target of mine, about right
    44. Super Furry Animals- Zuh?
    45. Oasis- I grew out of these guys in 1996, next...
    46. Motorhead- Much higher another blunder
    47. Status Quo- Middle of the road, shouldn't even be here really
    48. The Specials-
    49. Muse I think they get too much flak but what can you do?
    50. Jethro Tull- Never really got into this band but my Dad would be pissed if he saw this ranking
    51. Judas Priest- Higher, like Halford's voice, once you get past "You've Got Another Thing Coming" they have some great material
    52. The Moody Blues- Perenially underrated, early prog at it's best
    53. Duran Duran- Pure shite
    54. The Travelling Wilbury's- Again, don't really deserve to be here
    55. Mumford & Sons- Shit
    56. The Sex Pistols- I didn't give them a fair shake but I had visions of The Sex Pistols vs The Beatles in the final two. I had to nip that in the bud
    57. Coldplay- And equally like me with the Sex Pistols Coldplay got the shaft from other certain voters

Conspicous by their absence: The Police, The Yardbirds, The Animals among others

Personally I think the Traveling Wilburys should've got higher, though Vol. 1 was their only good album out of the two and they only lasted a few years.

Genesis, Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues, Elton John, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple should all be way the fuck higher. Even though I actually like The Beatles and they were obviously going to win from the start, part of me is annoyed that they did.

Though granted, The Who, Pink Floyd and David Bowie were way too high in my opinion. Not sure about Queen.

the great thing about these games is that we come up with a list that everyone considers mediocre! yay!

here's my personal ranking of these artists (after the top ~25 or so, it gets less precise):

    1. The Fall - The best band ever. Seriously.
    2. The Kinks
    3. King Crimson - Probably the best (relatively) popular prog band. Managed to be very, very good in the 80's!!
    4. New Order
    5. David Bowie
    6. PJ Harvey
    7. Radiohead
    8. The Beatles
    9. The Who
    10. Joy Division
    11. Elvis Costello
    12. Super Furry Animals
    13. The Cure
    14. Blur
    15. T. Rex
    16. Pink Floyd - syds solo albums are better
    17. Kate Bush
    18. The Slits
    19. Black Sabbath
    20. Pulp
    21. The Specials
    22. The Zombies
    23. The Smiths
    24. The Clash
    25. The Buzzcocks
    26. The Rolling Stones
    27. The Stone Roses
    28. The Jam
    29. The Sex Pistols - public image ltd are much better
    30. Oasis
    31. Echo and the Bunnymen
    32. Genesis
    33. Fleetwood Mac
    34. Depeche Mode
    35. Cream
    36. Yes
    37. Jethro Tull
    38. Duran Duran
    39. U2
    40. Manic Street Preachers
    41. Eric Clapton
    42. Motorhead
    43. Arctic Monkeys
    44. Status Quo
    45. Led Zeppelin - Made Only One good song, then started ripping off better artists and ruining the music industry for everyone
    46. Iron Maiden
    47. The Libertines
    48. Dire Straits
    49. The Moody Blues
    50. Travelling Wilbury's
    51. Judas Priest
    52. Deep Purple
    53. Coldplay
    54. Elton John
    55. Queen
    56. Mumford + Sons
    57. Muse - Everything I hate about Music.

All in all, this list was very limited in its selection. too many boring dinosaur bands and nme hype stuff for my liking. Electronic music is especially lacking.

  24. #652

Sorry, but these "dinosaur bands" and what not had a much bigger impact on British music than electronic, indie, alt bands had.

EDIT: There still needed to be some more representation from these genres however, but then this list would be a mile long.

you could argue that but i don't really see many new bands coming out that sound like deep purple et al.

  27. #654

Influence and impact go beyond sounding like another band otherwise music would be pretty boring. In Deep Purple's case almost every aspiring guitar player's first riff was Smoke On The Water plus Jon Lord innovated the use of the Hammond Organ as a heavy instrument. Ritchie Blackmore's classical influence inspired many bands and artists like Yngwie Malmsteen and Jason Becker plus more recent artists like Symphony X and Circus Maximus. Deep Purple also came around shortly before Zeppelin and Black Sabbath so they were some of the earliest pioneers of what would become heavy metal and still today are putting out solid albums, outlasting most of their contemporaries. They got a big shot in the arm when Steve Morse and Don Airy joined the band and are probably playing better than they ever have.

Metal: A Headbanger's Journey and to a greater extent the TV series Metal Evolution did a real good job of exploring the early heavy band's influence and eventual creation of Heavy Metal. Here is a taste of Deep Purple's (among others) influence and the bands they inspired.

  29. #656

So I did my own list of 60 acts, some of which don't appear on the original list. I tried to focus more on impact, legacy and influence rather than my personal favorites (which is also how I tried to base my votes). Here are the results:
