THat was a fun episode, although I think I would have liked if they made an A-plot out of Haley grief

    rip jeff fischer

    gone forever

I don't think I ever laughed harder then I did at that. Hysterical ep, 6/5
Also nice that they didn't screw over Steve. It was getting annoying to see him always end up losing a girl/failing/getting, well, screwed over.

I loved this episode! I'm a spelling bee winner myself, so I could relate to Steve to some degree. I liked how, unlike Family Guy, this show can teach a message without being preachy. It was great to see Steve get his girl for once (although who knows if the writers will keep this relationship), and it was sweet how he and Akiko kept messing up for each other at the end. Libby was cute, the words Francine put in Steve's dirty magazines were hilarious, and I even thought it was funny when Toshi's mom was surprised to learn that Francine was adopted by Chinese parents. At first, I didn't like how they used a montage of pictures instead of Steve and Akiko, as it seemed FG-esque, but I actually don't mind it now.

I would also have liked to see Hayley's grief as an A plot, but it was still good as a B plot. Hayley beating Roger up and his and Stan's RIP Jeff Fischer video were priceless. I also liked Roger's costume during the video. I think my favorite part, having taken several psychology classes, was Roger saying that he is the reason Elizabeth Kubler Ross dealt with and wrote about those stages. These days, FG could never pull off something that clever. I was also pleased to see Hayley win against Roger and Stan by taking their shuttlecock ring, thus ending the reason they were badgering her. I would have been livid if she had given in to them.

I think the best part about this was that Steve and Roger were mostly separate from each other (not that I have a problem with them as a duo) and both of them had a direct connection to two things I love: psychology and spelling.

Pretty good. Picked up a lot more once it got into the second half of the episode. The ending was pretty sweet though, which I enjoyed. And Francine's psychopathic nature here was pretty entertaining. I don't get the whole "steve has no talent ability" thing though. They're kinda disregarding continuity there. It's been shown that he has various talents. He sings very well, can play the cello, can dance (usually), i'm sure there's a few other things i'm missing....but still. Francine saying steve has no talent whatsoever is more in tune with stan's personality than hers. She isn't known to put steve down like that.

Is it just me or does Akiko sound really sound different in the episode? Did they change her voice actor again.?

Also I like how Steve is "finally getting the girl" in this episode but knowing ad they probably won't continue it all that much. I'm guessing steve's relationship status will be back to normal come next new episode unfortunately.

The one thing that really caught me off guard here was that picture montage joke they did. What in the fuck was that???? Just so stupid. I'd have much preferred a montage with akiko and steve spelling.

    Overall score 4/5

to add to the no talent apparently making realistic mask is not a worthy talent

It doesn't have to be funny. It's a montage to progress the story along nicely. They kinda butcher it and confused me with the random unfunny pictures.

Don't full like making a full review. So I'll just say it was a HUGE improvement over the last episode and I give it a 4/5. Lot of emotional and funny moments even if Francine was sorta out of character but in character at the same time.

I have no idea why us Americans are so enamored with spelling bees. And I agree with Redem and Knifey on the "no talent" thing....Steve has MANY talents. In addition to what Knifey_Spoony mentioned, he's also a straight A student and good at acting. And making realistic masks is a definite talent!

Deep and substancial, with lots of Steve/Akiko-shipping if that Halloween episode awhile back wasn't enough.

@Redem I told my sister that they purposely added that cameo to remind the audience that Francine was adopted by Chinese people in case they had forgotten.

I still can't get really small Akiko from her first appearance out of my head when she's on screen so their relationship seemed kinda creepy to me. I saw much of it during Walking Dead commercials and it was decent. Reminiscent of Blowfish and Spelling of course, did Steve win then? Did he get his face on a mountain we'll never see again?

This might have been my favorite episode of the season. Almost every aspect of it was clicking beautifully, and about 90% of the jokes hit for me. The characters were in great form tonight, and Steve was about as likable as he's been in a long time. Like in "Ad-ventures in Hayleysitting", his flirting is adorable...I loved his "Scott Caan with a cello" impression. The material with Toshi and Akiko and they're mother was also fantastic, I especially liked her questioning why the hell Toshi speaks Japanese. All of the spelling jokes were great also, like the porn magazine and Klaus's reaction to his bowl label.

I thought Francine was great tonight, perfectly in character. A little crazy, a little stupid, but ultimately a mother looking out for her son. Her obsessiveness was very on par with her character from "Iced, Iced Babies" so it didn't feel new at all. The Steve/Akiko romance was sweet and one Steve's most memorable love plots, with a nice touching ending for them, and also a nice wrap-up with Frannie. The B-plot was great too, to of my favorite moments in the episode were the Jeff montage and Roger quickly going through the 5 stages at the very end.

Finally, the cameos and callbacks in this episode were great. Greg and Terry and their baby, Francines parents, Robbie, Beet Man, the Langley waterfall, and a quick, funny Principal Lewis cameo.

    Definite 5/5.

Special shout-out to the Spelling Bee moderator as hilarious guest character. "I guess I'm not gonna make my date tonight. We just started having sex, so...that would have been fun".

Also, about Steve's singing, sure he's great but this was more about an extracurricular activity. I guess he could have joined choir, but this was something new for Steve hes good at, which is refreshing.

I noticed all of the callbacks, too....so many in one episode! I love how AD! writers remember stuff from previous seasons that other writers created.

I like how Steve was more himself in this episode. Like MindQuad said, he was more on par with his sweet side here, instead of the more predictable horny as hell teenager that he tends to be in recient episodes. Yeah he has always been pretty "hormonal" but reciently they use that and disregard other aspects of his personality and that's all he becomes (like in episodes like Max Jets). The writers often forget that he's just a kid who wants to do best by his parents. And he's often really sweet and emotional. Some of my favourite moments come from him trying to live up by his parents expectations as opposed to the "get the girl" or "lose my virginity" plots because those are generally all very similar. I love his relationship with francine as well. She seems very protective of him (again like mindquad said, this reminded me of of ice and men. We havent got a lot of francine and steve centered episodes since then actually, which is sad).

Also, callback to "Con Heir" with the glass-cage in the basement she put Akiko in. That was awesome.

I think American Dad and Bob's Burgers are the only shows on this site that barely get 2's and 1's. The lowest I ever seen was a 3.

Good ep. Enjoyed both plots very much. Loved that Stan and Roger are just chilling in the backyard while all this spelling bee stuff is going down. Super lolz at Roger as Braddah Iz.

    Yeah that character was brilliant.

Anyway this is 5/5 material for me. Not among my all-time favourites but still really, really good. It was just so great to see Steve win (Not the spelling bee of course, but Akiko's afections. I really hope the writers stick with this).

Really good ep. Loved the montage cheat, and the decided continuation on Jeff's disappearance, and not showing him at the planet just yet. 4.5/5.

I actually disagree that they will necessarily drop the Akiko relationship. While I can see it ending perhaps sooner than Debbie out of lack of interest, I don't think it will be status quo'd because he's liked her for a while, so that makes no sense. Nice to see a consistently funny episode showing Steve and Francine's relationship and a few callbacks. I think that for a "typical" (non-alter-ego) episode, Roger in the background works better because then more of his lines can be good rather than annoying. Not having to fit Jeff in in person seems to help the show, as it doesn't come off like they have a lot of conflicts left for him now that he's mostly accepted into the family. In a similar way, I can see Hayley being worth more at this point used only where it really counts. I'm not saying don't use those characters, but I would like to see them used better and not just strung along because they're "supposed" to be there. I liked the resolution, as well as other things like the porn mag and Francine behind it all that could be seen from a mile off.

None of the stuff others brought up really bothered me about this one, although I wasn't optimistic in the first couple of minutes until around the point with the poop hoover, mostly because I personally felt that the Asian angle was overdone up until they pulled the rest of the episode off. Agreed on Steve's talentlessness as a weak point though - he has plenty of talents. I don't consider spelling very long words to be an academic skill worth having in this day and age, and it is actually a skill I have and would be happy to trade for something like an incredible vocal range or better motor control. Got to disagree with wanting Hayley's grief for a main plot - wouldn't have wanted to see them try to stretch ten minutes out of that if I'm honest. Steve's plot was worth the focus in this case. Nicely done, American Dad - more like this please?

Agreed with you completely. I don't think the could have stretched out hayley's plot over 20 mins or so...it fit a lot better as a side story because there wasn't that much conflict involved. The funniest part of it for me was Roger going through the stages so quickly after hayley stole their prize anyway. It didn't have enough material to suffice an A plot.

I wonder which other episodes suffered because they had to match two good/funny plots on length... maybe they were written to complement each other and use all the characters, and maybe I'm being cynical, but I just bet we're going to get a really lame one because whether they put these two together from the start or not, they used too much good material. -shrug-

Considering that Lesley Wake Webster has never written for American Dad! before, he did an excellent job! At first I was going to give him the benefit of the doubt about saying Steve has no talents since I obviously didn't know how knowledgeable he is about the show, but with all of those callbacks and EXCELLENT characterization he must know a lot about it. He still added yet another great episode to a sublime season....it's pretty sad when a first timer did better than writers who have been working on the same show for years.
