I remember this year's as well as the following two year's Halloween specials as being mediocre at best. The Mr. and Mrs. Smith nonsense being a big factor. However I gotta admit I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this one on my re-watch. The same will be said of another episode in this clump. I think the middle segment may have been the best as it did have some cool atmospheric and ominous shots when everyone meets at Burns' Manor. Although the Halloween costume party, while hardly an original idea, was certainly put to good use and felt both in the spirit and quite funny. I still think the Bart robot story is kinda weird, but seeing Bart chop Homer in half with no hesitation was pretty great. Not one of the best, and certainly not one that immediately comes to mind when discussing the THOH episodes, but XVI was pretty good.

I have always enjoyed "See Homer Run." Combined with "Marge's Son Poisoning," which is a bit better, we get a good Homer and Lisa and a good Bart and Marge episode from this season. The Homer and Lisa pairing has been utilized well often from the early years of the series. Much like this season's THOH this one gets washed away in the grand scheme of things but it is rather funny and sweet. Homer as the Safety Salamander seems like a stretch, but his sincerity makes it work. Plus I love the set-up for it with Lisa's home-made gifts. There are even some pretty funny political gags here. Certainly better than the political episodes in Seasons 19 and 23.

"Regarding Margie" was the second episode I actually enjoyed more than I was expecting on this re-watch. I find that Homer is characterized very well throughout and a joy to watch. The amnesia-stricken Marge is also enjoyable. The concept for the idea is hardly original, but like the costume segment of the THOH I liked where they went with it. The episode's weakest portion is easily the first act but ya know what? I really didn't mind that much either. In fact it was pretty good. This season seems plagued by some poor Homer and Marge outings, but this isn't one of them.

As we move on the episodes tend to get more "forgettable" from here on out. Luckily for "We're on the Road to D'ohwhere" however it still has at least two things that jump out at you...or well me at least. The first thing is the "controversial" ending where nothing is really resolved. As I think I said in the episode thread if this were a common occurrence it might bug me here, but it really isn't. So instead it actually helps me remember the episode as I actually liked the admittedly rushed ending. It wasn't anything great of course I mean a 3/5 is a 3/5, but pretty cool. The other thing here is that I can't help but think of The Simpsons Movie with the way Homer and Bart play off one another in this episode, at least at certain parts. The scene at the diner is probably the prime example of this. It works for me, most of the time at least. The Homer on the cliff runner is where it wears itself thin a bit.

Finally we have "The Last of the Red Hat Mamas" which is an alright Marge episode, but one which I'm having a difficult time remembering. The Lisa and Milhouse sub-plot seems to stand out more. The heist at Burns' Manor and Moe suicide attempt were enjoyable as well. I'm honestly blanking on much of the rest of the episode though I'm afraid. Considering this made the upper half of the season that probably isn't a good thing.

I think your giving "See Homer Run" too much credit. Its a season 16 holdover though, so I can except that you like it this much. The scene with Jimbo's political ad was rather amusing.

Dohwhere's gloomy "controversial" ending make me chuckle.
