My Simpsons Ultimate Episode Ratings and Rankings: Introduction

Rate this Entry
Ask any fan of the Simpsons what he or she's favorite episode of the series is and you'll likely get an answer. Ask them to make a top 5 or 10 and, while less likely, you still could get your answer. But what about asking them what their 179th favorite episode is, or 350th? For a series as long as the Simpsons, one of the most difficult tasks for a fan must be ranking favorite episode from 1 to 486(as of now). And that is just what I intend to do.

I joined nohomers 31 days ago, but I stalked the forum for well over 2 years before. The reason I didn't join? It was the enormous negativity I felt this board had regarding the post-classic era of the show, a time I consider to be Seasons 9 through the present. Now don't get me wrong, I know how bad some of these episodes can be, but I would read some comments here and get pretty upset by the way people would so very nonchalantly toss an episode aside, calling it utter garbage sometimes over an aspect I would consider a nitpick. I feared that I would get into senseless arguments and come off as something of an oaf who can't make good arguments and is blind to mediocrity when it is present. However I think, for the most part, I've managed to hold my own in discussions here so far.

Anyway to get back to the point, it was days after joining that I was inspired to re-watch all of Season 15 of the show, a season which while many would consider "good" compared to its contemporaries, one which few if any would look twice at over the classic era. You may have read some of, if not all of my reviews for the season in their respective rate and review threads. I'd say it took me about 28 days or so to watch them all, considering I took 5 days off between episodes 20 and 21, and watched 21 and 22 in the same day. I mention this only to acknowledge how very unstable my schedule for watching the episodes really is.

What I write now is merely an introduction for a multi-part blog which will share my final ratings and rankings for all of season 15. I will not review every episode here again as that is what my entries in their respective threads are there for, rather I might offer final lingering thoughts on some episodes, or may even ignore some of them completely. However, at the end I will have all 22 episodes ranked from favorite to least. Are you starting to get the big picture here?

If I apply this to all of the post-classic seasons I can eventually get a rating and ranking of all 486 episodes of the Simpsons! Why would I do this? I suppose the largest reason now is boredom, followed closely by curiosity and a sense of accomplishment. Beginning with the next blog entry I shall rank season 15 in 4 to 5 parts, and then I will take what I presume to be a month to pick another post-classic season and watch all of its episodes and add more blog entries. I will do this for seasons 9 through 22.

Now for some guidelines:
First, all of this is subject to change. I may abandon this entire thing or just drop it for weeks only to pick it up again. It is merely a whim.
Second, I am NOT going to go in order. I have no idea what my next season may be, but am leaning towards season 16 right now.
Third, I may take days to upload the next blog entry, or might do it the same day. I will however NOT start a new season before finishing the previous season's blog.
Fourth, My grading will be on a post-classic era scale and number from .5 to 5/5. I may later explain what each specific number grade means, but have not decided to do so as of now.
Fifth, because I have two grading scales and things may get confusing(for me) I will only be rating and reviewing the 307 post-classic era episodes as of right now. Probably, a long, long time from now, I will do the classic era and then attempt a mixture of the two. Thanks Jamie for getting me to point this out.

To conclude I say that if anyone is interested then I do not encourage you to over analyze these blog entries or anything, they are after all mere opinion. Honestly I don't expect anyone to take these things seriously, I just use them to alleviate boredom and have a little fun. But, if one day you are browsing the board and notice I have updated my blog I would be happy to see you found the prospect of reading it interesting enough to waste 3 or 4 minutes of your life.

I must conclude with one final confession. At my current pace this project will take me over a year and a half. I honestly doubt I will finish. Who knows if I will even be alive then? Will the Simpsons still be on? If not, will this board no longer even exist? Regardless of all this uncertainty I will plunge forward and begin this epic journey with Part 1 of my Season 15 episode ratings and rankings soon enough.

PS: If anyone actually read all this I commend you......................................................... ............................................................ ..............................and you have no life!

what would a 5/5 post-classic episode be rated in classic era scale?

Whoa, never expected a comment so quickly...or at all! It really depends on my sentiment regarding the episode and whether or not it gives that classic vibe. Some, like Season 16's "Don't Fear the Roofer" I actually view as on the same level as certain classic era episodes...or better gasp! Others, like the same season's "Fat Man and Little Boy," is probably only a 4/5 in Classic Era terms...simply put, it varies which is why, as of now, I will only be ranking the 307 post-classic episodes. At worst, a 5/5 post classic era episode will be 4/5 in classic era standards, no less....according to my opinion of course

You have most certainly held your own on the board so far. This seems like rather an epic project but it'll be interesting to watch unfold - do you think you'll be satisfied with your final rankings?

And also, I tend to dismiss post-classic era episodes myself and then re-watch them at some quiet moment and enjoy the episode nonetheless, even if it's not to classic era standards of plot and humour. I'm probably not the only one who does this either.

Thanks! Honestly, I get the feeling that my rankings for episodes will change over time, at least until the end of this. I mean, if I watch a Season 19 episode and remember giving a Season 15 episode I liked less a higher grade, I'm gonna need to do some editing, or vice-versa, you know what I mean. I personally tend to judge the post-classic era on humor and characterizations above all else, notably plot and satire. As a result, I'll likely be giving episodes most would consider bad or merely ok far better grades then they'd expect. But that's the thing really, its all opinion and opinions were made to be disagreed with.

I think I'll be able to rank the 307 post-classic era episodes easily enough though, and on a consistent basis. It's just gonna take a long time....the real test will come when I blend in the classics.

This looks like it's going to be a really interesting project! I love that you are doing post-classic eps, it's always a little saddening to see the way they are destroyed at times. Good luck!

Thanks for the support. I agree about the post-classic era. Some deserve to be forgotten, but others shouldn't really be so overlooked!
