Digital Press is a collector's 'zine that's been around since 1989.

Last summer, members were asked to give their own top 25 lists, which were compiled into what you see here.

Just to give you an idea of how nuts some of these people are, Pen Pen Tricelon (a Japan only DC launch game where you race penguins) received SEVEN votes.

But seriously, unlike many top lists in gaming mags this wasn't just a bunch of mainstream reviewers sniffing their own rosey farts. This represents rabid enthusiasts from tons of different catagories.

Meh, I only glanced at top 50 or so but it already reeks of hardcorism to a silly degree. The NES Legend Of Zelda for example was great for its time, but it's nearly unplayable today imo, and you would have to be looking through severely rose tinted glasses to say it's the tenth best game ever made, or that it's better than all of the 3D Zelda's bar OOT.

Nice to see Metroid that high, I think it's easily the best nes game.

Top is typical, for a reason, though it doesn't really bother me. I'm more interested in seeing the rest of the list and what kind of games people pick aside from the obvious all time greats, even if it's friggin nearly 800 games. But it's nice to see Kirby's Avalanche and Valis 3 are mentioned at all. And Mickey Mouse's Castle of Illusion, too :x

That's why it's called the top 800 games of all time. Not the best games right now.

Zelda is my all time favorite series but let's face it, the only ones that aren't overrated are the ones that aren't even rated at all.

Overall the only omissions that really bothered me were Oblivion and Road Rash II

The thing is games don't usually age well in the way that movies can. that's not to say that aren't plenty of brilliant old games that stand the test of time, but I think a lot of the voters must be picking games based on their nostalgia for playing them at the time as opposed to being more objective.
And possibly because they like to think their cool for being ultra hardcore old skool and cynical about new games.

But games age in a similiar fashion as film. Earlier generations innovate while later generations refine. But sometimes important things get lost along the way.

Current games can either do old ideas the right way, do them in an overzealous or careless way, or come up with new ideas.

Being an overbiased fanboy, I am stoked to see that Nintendo games dominate 90% of the top 10. Kind of a massive list, though. Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't consider it a very dubious distinction if my game was ranked the "741st best game of all time".

No I don't really think you can compare, games that seem great today can look incredibly limited by the time the next generation comes around and I don't just mean in terms of graphics. But it doesn't really happen with film, Citizen Kane doesn't look bad just because it's in black & white, it still looks great and the technolgy doesn't affect the writing, The 2nd star wars trilogy isn't a better set of films just because it has more expensive special effects, because the story is ultimatley the most important thing.
But with games, technology can hold back ideas that developers have and they can be impossible to carry out.

But as far as technology holding back ideas? That happened in the nineties with 3D games too. Remember all the N64 platformers that recycled maybe twelve levels if you were lucky, forcing you to go back and collect shit? That's a good example of technological limitations holding back good ideas. Imagine all of Mario 3 or Mario World rendered in 3D space. That would have been impossible on the N64 and probably would have taken an insane amount of resourses on CD. Even now it would be an extremely difficult undertaking to make such a large game.

One of the many reasons why 2D games don't always transfer well into 3D

Mediocre technology doesn't always keep games from having depth. Just as high technology doesn't always insist that the game must be deep. There are good games now that aren't as deep as their predecessors, but are still incredible. GTA and Zelda have many common qualities, but A Link to the Past still has more real depth than San Andreas does, and it's all a matter of design.

And even some of the more innovative things being done now could probably have been done years ago. Guitar Hero? In the arcades? Using laserdisc?

All I can say is, often when I go back to old games, they seem terrible by today's standards, but films that are classic in their time, often stay classic.
It's a lot more rare for games to stand the test of time, even if a fair amount of them do.

Some of the games may not hold their fun over the years, but think of them as sports atheletes. Sure, 10 years after they retire, they suck. But they still get voted as the best ever and get into the hall of fame.

people who revisit older games tend to typically focus way too much on how they look and sound...not on how they play. those old nes games are about as well made top to bottom as it gets. yes by today's standards they look ridiculous, but take yourself out of being critical of the looks and just play the game. your experience will be as satisfying as most of the games you have played during the last 5 years or so.

Well I'm not guilty of that, as I said there's plenty that do stand the test of time. But people can be too dismissive of the importance of graphics, yes gameplay is all that matters really, but better graphics can create a more clear world, so it's easier to suspend belief so you can be more invested into the world.

Uh, Nearly unplayable? Such an ignorant remark leads me to believe you have a shallow taste in video games.

The top 10 is a little jumbled around, imo, but most of those games are certainly worthy of the top 10, my top 10 anyway. Super Mario 3, Mario World, Super Metroid, Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Zelda: A Link to the Past especially.

Well, I'm at least glad to see Shenmue make the top 50.

i searched and found no return to castle wolfenstein which is my favorite game of all time and one of the most underrated multiplayer games ever.
