Hermes repeatedly upgrades his body with robotic parts! Discuss!
This was a total 5/5 episode! It was so funny from the moments with Roberto and the moments with Zoidberg and Scruffy! Good god this was a pure classic!
I only caught the last 3 minutes with repeated monster mash references. I said I'd wait until the midnight re-air to vote but I just remembered about that now so yeah....fuck....I liked what little I saw though.
I didn't care for this episode actually. Zoidberg's sub-plot was great (As was the Monster Mash parody), but Hermes plot seemed to be very rushed as he went from one upgrade to the next, not to mention how he turned into such a dickhead that it almost seemed out-of-character. But that's not my biggest gripe with this episode. My biggest gripe is the killing off of Roberto. He was such a hilarious character. Hell, he gave me the biggest honest to God laugh of the episode during this exchange:
URL: "You're goin' straight to the electromagnetic chair."
Roberto: "And then...Imma STAB it!"
So, yeah, that's got me genuinely pissed off. Although there were 4 other darn right funny moments for me.
-Each Scruffy line had me laughing.
-The Robot Devil getting hit by the curry
-The sudden cut to the Professor laughing like a lunatic outside the graveyard
-The Encouragement drill
Also, just while it's still fresh in my head....two gags that I didn't like in particular were The Professor's lips sagging without his teeth and Fry's space suit exploding....simply because it felt like the sort of gag the writers would normally avoid on the basis of "Even non-nerds know you can't breath in space, how are we gonna explain THAT one at Comic-Con?".
So in short...This episode was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not worth 250 Futurama points.
2.5/5 (I'm being generous due to the one Roberto line that got a good ol' belly laugh out of me)

Just be thankful
Alright I just saw it and it was pretty solid throughout. The pacing was a bit fast in act 2 but it was still enjoyable. Zoidberg was great throughout and I loved the Robot Devil cameo. Monster Mash was the best though. 5/5, easily the best episode of the season so far.
the big difference between futurama and modern simpsons is that futurama tells its stories much more cohesively. for example, this one had some great links between the beginning and the end (hermes' spicy skin, roberto).
unfortunately it's not really that funny. this one barely made me laugh at all, and so have the ones preceding it. 2.5/5
and as a side note: does anyone else dislike the score that they use? i mean just like music that introduces a scene or whatever. it sounds really really cheap, i don't remember the FOX episodes sounding like that.

M-E-H...and what's with all this nudity/semi-nudity with Leela and Amy (last night, they were in the shower, last week they were scantily clad warriors and the week before that Leela was wearing a see-thru nightie!)
I really liked most of the gags and Zoidberg was fantastic in it, but I also agree with some of the flaws Shaunbadia pointed out. I seriously doubt they will kill Roberto for real. Maybe him and Calculon will come back in the same episode?
I'd give it a 4/5 mostly because of the original premise, the gags and extremely likeable Zoidberg, but I agree Hermes' characterization could have been better. I guess being more productive is sort of a good motivation for this character to get the implants, but it really seems he should have thought a little more about it during the process.
Also I really liked that Zoidberg didn't actually eat Hermes' organs, that would have been too gross even for him .
My Simpsons homage!
I was enjoying it up until the end where it lost the plot and a robot dissolved after eating some of Hermes' skin. It had gone wrong a bit before that, though which was disappointing.
I enjoyed watching Hermes become more robotic and Zoidberg's attempt to replace what he saw as a lost friend. Starting off with a harpoon instead of the arm/hands to make himself more useful in general was strange, though.
It was okay. The joke about the hot sauce burning through the ground went on way too long - it felt like the run-on joke in Them, Robot. The rest was boring, but not offensively bad. It would normally get a C+, but the Monster Mash song was so entertaining, I'll bump it up to a B-. Second weakest behind Butterjunk.

I thought this was really good. Coming from me, Mr. Zoidberg-Is-Overrated, I gotta say that Zoidberg was the best thing in the episode. He was so happy and optimistic all the way through the episode, it was kind of contagious. His ventriloquism act with Little Hermes was extremely, extremely messed up but is also extremely, extremely funny. It's amazing how that joke being done in The Simpsons would be really painful to watch, but Futurama can get away with it. Being set in the future is a nice luxury.
Nice, cohesive plot structure as well, particularly with the callbacks with Roberto, Zoidberg's ventriloquism skills, and the spicy skin. The Futurama team has that attention to detail that is really appreciated.
I thought the episode went a little off the rails in Act 3 when Hermes was demanding the brain operation, even after LaBarbara showed up. I don't think they did a great job of demonstrating why he thinks taking out his brain would benefit him (since he couldn't experience the result) other than the explanation that "Hermes is crazy now." Obviously, they have to do it to get Roberto's brain in that body, but it seemed pretty forced to me.
Other than that, really solid episode. Best of the season. 4.5/5.
60 Second Simpsons - Ep31 - Rosebud
The odd thing is that this time around he actually does everything right...but it doesn't feel out of character. It feels right. It takes Hermes to die and be turned into a puppet to make Zoidberg a good comedian. Or at least to make his friends in Planet Express laugh at his jokes. It seems that his optimistic nature and his love for his friends literally gets the bets from the worst situation. In other episodes of recent seasons he has saved the Professor or fought with Clamps. I notice they are making him a little more of an hero recently. But it works, cause it's always because he wants to help in a desperate situation. Similarly he never gets the recognition he deserves , here Hermes even discuss with her wife before he even said Thank You to Zoidberg. Everybody still see him as the weird guy at the end. That's why it still works and makes him feel like the same character.
On the other hand, while the whole puppet situation is as messed up as funny, as you pointed out, I think the resolution of just including the brain in his dead body and Hermes being completely recovered is a little too "magical" even for Futurama. It was funny I guess but this doesn't even show the advances in medicine of the future. I mean, they don't show how the operation is done, it's as magical as it has happened in The Simpsons in the present.
It's probably more of a tone change than anything. Zoidberg has always been the super-idealistic guy going "Hooray!" in the background all the time, but in Seasons 1-4, they constantly underlined what a failure he is and how much everyone hates him. And I guess that's an okay starting point, but it also means he's going to be written very one-dimensionally for awhile. Since the reboot, the writers probably looked at the characters they had and decided that Zoidberg had a lot of potential to be fleshed out. Hence, stuff like Tip of the Zoidberg. In addition to the stuff you listed, you have the Zoidberg/Cubert subplot in A Clockwork Origin where he succeeds at parenting, as well as his dance sequence in the anime sequence of Reincarnation.
The whole "Zoidberg is weird and annoying" dynamic on the show got tiring. I like this, "Zoidberg is a weird, annoying badass" dynamic waaaaaaay better.
An interesting take on the Zoidberg-Hermes 'relationship' and I liked Roberto's sudden appearance (he gave us the best jokes in the episode!)
