Two movies with a lot of similarities, but did you really expect that much of a difference in story and direction?
How many times are you able to see Uncle Ben die?
But most of all... which one of the two movies did you prefer?

I'd rather watch the old 1960's Spider-Man cartoons...the one that has the Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can theme song!
Spider Man 2002 gets worse with age. The new one couldn't possibly be worse than 3 and I think 2 is overrated. I probably have a healthy mindset to see this.
The make up effects still look retarded in the commercials though
There's really no contest.

I've only seen the 2002, not the sequels.
I've been trying to see a film once a week or so, and this looks decent. Would I enjoy this folks?

only a lot!
Only seen Spiderman thus far. Have no interest in seeing this at all

Led Zeppelin IV > Houses of the Holy > Physical Graffiti > Led Zeppelin II > Led Zeppelin I > Led Zeppelin III > Presence > In Through the Out Door > Coda
those "old 1960's Spider-Man cartoons" are incredibly boring to me. it's just him swinging from building to building for a half hour.

I like them the same, but for the poll, I'd give TASM a vote.
I liked Garfield's take on Peter Parker better, but the Original SM had a better story.
Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.

Well yeah, Andrew Garfield did a fine job and Marc Webb's directing really shines in the smaller moments, but I don't know if he's that comfortable with doing action scenes. They are acceptable, but he isn't able to add something refreshing. And the texture of Spiderman's suit still reminds me of a basketball.

I always liked that upside down kiss from the first movie.
And I know a lot of people didn't like the way Mary-Jane was portrayed in that trilogy (also because her characterization drastically differed from the comicbook interpretation), but I really liked Kirsten Dunst in the first one.
I actually want to see this film now seeing as Emma Stone's in it. God, I love her, mostly in her Zombieland appearance and Easy A
TASM seriously lacked some Jameson, and needed more poems about spiderman
Spider-man really sucks in keeping his identity a secret in this one.
I thought it was decent (the new one) but didn't really like the character of Spiderman. Particularly early on. Garfield was great though. But yeah, a pretty decent film. I probably prefer 2002 but only marginally.
Also... too many disappearing/deceasing father figures in one movie.

I saw the "amazing" spider-man, it wasn't really amazing.
2002 Spider-Man for me...

Calling it 'the untold story' in trailers makes it even more eyerolling.
And didn't they promise during preproduction that they were gonna skip the origin story? Well, it took even more time than in the original one. And the whole prologue with his parents stayed unresolved and was unnecessary for the storyline in this movie. I guess it's something they want to address in the second one, but why not use that scene as a flashback in the next one then?
I don't watch TASM but I'm sure the 2002 is better since I watch the trailers of TASM...

What I did like about The Amazing Spider Man is that for the most part it avoided the melodrama of the love story from the first trilogy. Andrew Garfield is perfect as Peter Parker, I was never really a fan of Tobey McGuire's overly moody/sensitive portrayal. Garfield really brought the humour out that was in the comics. Martin Sheen was also great as Uncle Ben and they added a nice twist to Aunt May by not falling back on the elderly characterization from the comics/first trilogy. I even liked making Gwen Stacy a match for Peter in the academics department instead of being a bit of an airhead as portrayed in the comics. I think this was required to add some more depth to her character.
I do wish that there was at least some mention of J. Jonah Jameson and the Daily Bugle. It felt a bit weird not seeing any confrontations between Spider Man and J.J. I'm also getting a bit tired of everyone finding out who Spider Man is within the first hour of the movie which the trilogy and this movie are guilty of. I know on the screen having a "secret identity" looks absurd ("why don't they recognize his voice?") but people should be able to suspend their disbelief for two hours. Isn't this the point of seeing a movie in the first place? To escape reality?
The 2002 movie did have a better all around story and a more defined story arc for Peter's character. The first movie seems to flow better and I enjoyed Norman Osborne/Green Goblin more as a villian (the classic Spider Man villian). I would give the nod to the first movie still, but both are great films. This franchise has come along away from those first rumours of a James Cameron/Leonardo DiCarpo effort mentioned in the mid-nineties before they decided to do Titanic together.

I saw the new one the other day (with @eric actually!) and I loved it. I'd want to see the 2002 film again before I say for sure, but I think I like the new one better. It's better-acted, doesn't take itself too seriously, and is just fun to watch.
Garfield > Maguire
Stone > Dunst
Sally Field & Martin Sheen > whoever their 2002 counterparts were
Ifans < Dafoe
Leary = awesome
Dennis Leary actually seems perfect for the Norman Osborne role actually. When he first appeared in the movie that's who I thought it was, then I remembered in the synopsis he plays Capt. Stacy.
I was sad and pissed that they killed Leary's character off at the end. He's awesome and I would have loved to see him in the sequels.
Agreed, as @cinco said, too many father figures died in this movie. Cinco also said how many times do we have to see Uncle Ben die but I don't know what else you could do though as the death of Uncle Ben is essential to telling the origin story.
