Sigh... Celebrities from Classic and Modern Simpsons.

After the last Celebrity Guest Appearance, Lady Gaga, I thought, the episode could do the plot could do it without her, just give the self-esteem role to one of the less-appeared Simpson Characters, give them, a role. Yeah.. and then I remembered Michael Jackson voicing Leon Kompowski. That was not only a great Celebrity role but the plot could actually work. Now I'm thinking, "Modern Simpson, your funny, you do have occasional touching emotional moments..." but when I see a bad plot (hell, a reused idea is much better) or worst of all, a celebrity making a pointless cameo or a big role on the episode... I think... "Modern Simpsons, what happened?". Yep, their were some celebrities who the writers penned in to make the plot and role work together in the Modern Simpsons, even cameo's, a good example is Keifer Sutherland who appeared twice, but mostly they seem to be pointless at times. Believe me, the Simpsons staff doesn't do it for the money but sometimes I think they just want to meet famous people after the last interview I heard. If they were to put back good celebrities... they should put classic and elderly wise people up in the episode. We've seen a lot of that in the Classic Simpsons, and so far we've seen Modern Celebrities who don't seem to blend well in The Simpsons. What do you think?

I think why is this not in Simpsons General Discussion?

Keifer Sutherland has appeared on the show 3 times, maybe 4.

In general, the fact that the celebrities are more "modern" doesn't usually seem to make much a difference. It really depends on how they use the celebrities they get.

If they build a plot AROUND a celebrity, it's generally pretty bad.

Brief cameos that add nothing to the story can be pointless. It's especially annoying when a character says something like "[gasp] *insert celebrity name here* *brief description of celebrity* What are you doing here?" If it actually makes sense to include them (Like in The Book Job), it can be good.

They sometimes manage to use the celebrities well though. It's usually best when a celebrity is playing a character IMO. Unfortunately, I can't think of any good recent examples right now. There's Glenn Close, Kelsey Grammar, and Joe Mantegna, but their characters first appeared during the classic era.

Martin Landau gave a fine performance in The Great Simpsina...but then they shoehorned in other magic stars playing themselves although they weren't too bad I guess.

Nothing more annoying than a celebrity who appears on a show and has a pointless line. Ronaldo appeared twice in an episode and added nothing at all!

Today they tend to use that 'one line' celebrity pretty much all the time. While the Simpsons do abuse the 'guest star' role, they sometimes work with the plot and can add an interesting dynamic to an episode.
