This was not a really funny episode.

Besides, I don't like the theme of "Lisa is an unhappy girl" in the show and this episode is particularly depressing.

Watched it yesterday, only to find it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. That still doesn't mean it's good though. The episode had a couple of funny jokes here and there, but the ridiculous plot and Gaga ass-kissing makes bad moments stick out like a sore thumb. Overall, it's extremely flawed and the plot is ridiculous, but it has a couple of moments that manage to save it from Beyond Blunderdome levels of awful. 2/5, 4.5/10 (extremely flawed).

It's still so awful it's mind-blowing, but now the third worst, not the worst ever.
However, it still is so bad it's iconic.

I liked this episode too. It isn't the type of satire I like on the show (although they did a bit of that with GaGa's over the top outfits, trained hummingbirds, the train, etc) but the show was funny. Not every episode has to be the the stratospheric achievement of a statement about humanity or the cruelty of society. Why can't some just be fun?

Also Lisa's rant at GaGa is one of my favorite Lisa moments.

I normally enjoy Modern Simpsons episodes in some kind of aspect, because they usually have some good jokes here and there, even if the episode itself is garbage. This episode, however, has absolutely no redeeming factors whatsoever. It felt like a 22 minute commercial for Lady Gaga. Pure shit. 0/5

My feeling is when someone doesn't like an episode they weren't the intended audience for it. In college I hated all the new episodes without realizing they were dealing with experiences I hadn't had.

This is a meh episode for me, I actually think Lisa made some very valid points when she called Gaga out on her BS- It's easy to "love yourself!!" when you're beautiful and popular and rich, much harder when you're just an average dorky kid in a small town who gets bullied every day and has no one to turn to. And I also respect the way Gaga was willing to make fun of herself here. But even with that in mind, so much of this episode was super cringey: the kiss was totally unnecessary and did nothing to further the plot or add to the humor and I really feel like it was just done so people on tumblr could make .gifs of it and get people talking about the episode, the singing was nauseating and the Moe joke was pretty cruel imo, no one should be 'beyond help'. I know it was just a joke and the subject of depression/mental illness is something pretty personal to me and I'd like to see it better portrayed in the media, but even when you put aside that, the joke just comes outta nowhere and doesn't add to anything or make a point, it's just there to be mean-spirited. Like thanks but if I wanna see lame, mean jokes which aren't clever or funny and exist purely to offend/make people uncomfortable I'll watch Family Guy.

I don't really remember much else about this episode, but overall it's one of those eps I'm willing to keep on if it comes on TV, but will probably stare at my phone or go on the internet while plays so I don't have to give it my full attention.

Not as bad as people imply. Not the worst episode ever for sure. I found it less cringe-worthy than other episodes I can think of, like Politically Inept, or the 7 minutes of Homer farting in thoh 22.
This episode was unremarkable but really not that bad.

I hate this episode so much I can't put it into words. It destroys Lisa's character just to make Lady Gaga look like a god, seriously this screams corporate on every level. -2/5

this episode is just another guest star fellation and they've done tons of them and people only hate this one because they hate lady gaga and if the justin bieber episode had been like this instead of just a cameo as it turned out they'd hate that one too for the same stupid reasons.

not that this is good, it isn't, but it isn't abysmal. it's just mediocre like most of the surrounding lot.

I know nothing about Lady Gaga, but I don't like this episode simply because it's all just a suck-up. They don't poke fun at her at all like they do with most other celebrities. If a guest has a large role in an episode, it gets tiring if they're just treated wonderfully the entire time.

This is nothing more than guest star porn. Now, a television show doing episodes about a guest star with characters going on about how great he/she is, is a very old trope. Hell, Mister Ed did it with Clint Eastwood Meets Mister Ed! The difference however is that there, the guest star was still just a regular person. He didn't act like a houlier than thou person, the humor stemmed from the reactions from other people.
But if the guest star is characterized as houlier than thou, you have to poke fun at it. If you do, and it's done well enough, there might be some entertainment to be had.
But if you don't even do that, and have both the characters and the guest star acting like someone is god-like... then you better for the love of God back it up with a good plot or at least solid jokes.

Lisa Goes Gaga fails at every single step and as a result winds up being a laughless, forced, embarrassing affair. It deserves every single bit of hate it gets and does not deserve any "Well, it's not that bad actually" reception. There are worse episodes (Every Man's Dream became my new least favorite), but that doesn't mean people have been too harsh on it.

Go fuck yourself, Lisa Goes Gaga.

I don't care for Lady Gaga. I like some of her music and The Fame Monster was a good album. But man, this episode is goddamn cheesy beyond any recognition. No celebrity in the past was worshipped to this level, she's basically depicted as a goddess that everyone loves and is fabulous because of her psychic powers while she's just a fucking entertainer in real life. Most of the episode focuses on "LADY GAGA DOES GAGA THINGS", with the cartoon freedom of handling it in a surreal manner that goes with it (which is very inappropriate), instead of "LADY GAGA HAS A PROBLEM". The ending is particularly insulting because Gaga didn't do any contribution for the resolution of the conflict, all she had to do is being herself and everything returns to normal because of that.

Saying that this episode is hated only for Gaga is a sweeping simplification to me, it's like saying the Scully Era is hated for Jerkass Homer... Oh wait.

Actually, almost every episode that focuses on a celebrity guest star as the main plot are hated. Take The Musk Who Fell to Earth, Beyond Blunderdome and A Midsummers Nice Dream for example. Elon Musk was a name that not a lot of people on here have heard of prior to this episode and while he has more importance in the world compared to someone like Lady Gaga, the episode still revolved around praising him and Al Jean disguised it as "Not an ass-kissing episode" by having pretty safe jabs like his password being "Musk rules".

Beyond Blunderdome is one of the more polarizing episodes in this category as it does have it's defenders just like When You Dish Upon A Star. (Then again even the most hated Scully episodes have it's defenders.) I'm neutral to the episode, but most people seem to hate it due to the wacky plot and Jerkass Homer which isn't that much different from the typical Scully episode with the only difference being that focuses on a celebrity.

A Midsummers Nice Dream is different since Cheech and Chong are the most respected celebrities from these episodes. They're pretty much well known for making the "Stoner Comedy" sub-genre what it is today and Up in Smoke is considered to be a comedy classic. Still, the episode does focus on praising them as comedic geniuses and even over-explains one of their comedy bits and why it was so funny. I actually like that episode mainly because I like Cheech and Chong's brand of humor and didn't really mind that the episode focused on them especially considering that the subplot wasn't that great. Still humor is subjective and a lot of people here didn't really find it funny and this seems like an episode where people who are more familiar with Cheech and Chong is more likely to enjoy it.

I've only seen this episode once and I don't want to watch it again, (Mainly because this is one of those episodes that if I hated the first time, then the chances of me liking it on re-watch is highly unlikely.) but I don't hate this episode because I'm not a fan of Lady Gaga's music or that it focuses on a celebrity guest star for that matter. I hate it because it focused on her in the worst way possible and it's a great example of The Simpsons trying to stay relevant, but this episode is starting to get more dated as time goes on and I don't even think I'm exaggerating when I say that this episode was dated when it first aired. That's how bad it is.

I don't entirely get why this episode is so extra-hated. It feels like the writers just went nuts here, just making an episode as ridiculous and over-the-top as possible. It... well, it doesn't entirely work, and the episode does feel slow at parts. Homer climbing the wrong tree, the town cheering about the Waterloo comment, there were some legitimately funny moments, although they were spread somewhat thin. Gaga herself is amusing in just how ridiculous her character is. The biggest problem with the episode was Lisa's problem, though: I just didn't care. It just felt kind of empty. The best Lisa episodes make me feel, but this one doesn't.

Anyway, it's not a very good episode, but I don't hate it, either. It's kinda' fun.

Well said, I don't think I could waste 22 more minutes of my time watching this drivel, I already felt dirty watching it once, keep in mind I was able to get some enjoyment out of The Greatest Story Ever D'ohed, (Tour Guide and Homer withstanding) but this episode is just awful. Not a single funny joke and the plot is atrocious garbage. They didn't put any satirical spin it ("Funny costumes" doesn't count) which completely goes against what makes the show so enjoyable and instead feels like a cheap attempt to make the show modern while simultaneously dating itself big time. If there's any relief to this trash it's that I don't think I'll ever hate an episode more.

I had been warned to avoid this by literally every single source. However I decided to watch this to form my own opinions.

    Now I'm regretting it.

If it were possible rate this negative out of five, I would. Because good god that was almost the worst thing I've ever seen!

Who the hell looked at that this episode at the Simpsons team and thought at the end "Yes, I've done a good job there. In fact its so good, lets make it our season finale!"

Where to start... There was potentially a good Lisa/Bart episode there with Bart trying to redeem himself after betraying Lisa at the start, or Lisa trying to rise above the exclusion and bullying she was facing. But no. What then proceeds in front of my eyes is the LOWEST I've ever seen a show sink to.

There were some good jokes in the episode, I'm not that narrow-minded. However, its a bit like trying to dissolve a kilogram of sugar with a single drop of water. The sheer CRAPPINESS of the episode completely overshadows any gags.

Lisa's "breakthrough" at the end is her finding belief in herself, and then she proceeds to sing about herself to send a message to all of Springfield. Now, off the top of my head I can think of two things wrong with that:

    1: The song she sings is SO self-centered. Lisa would never do this such a thing;
2: Lisa already DOES believe in herself. That's how she is so academically successful despite little to no encouragement from her parents or teacher. The problem she was facing in this particular episode was that she was being excluded and straight up bullied by the kids at her school. How singing in front of the town about her interests fixes everything? I do not know.

I'm not sure everything wrong with this episode can be expressed in words. There's been some bad episodes of The Simpsons. Some had incoherent plots, some didn't make sense, some almost ruined minor characters, and some were just plain boring.

However. Lisa goes Gaga is TOXIC. I should have avoided it.

I even get the feeling that Yeardley Smith - who knows Lisa's character better than anyone else - couldn't do this episode properly. For the most part her acting was below par (aside from maybe the bit when Lisa was yelling about how useless Lady Gaga actually is at cheering people up), and also Smith is a great singer (just look at the Simpsons Sing the Blues album, or episodes like "'Round Springfield"), and yet she really did not deliver her usual high standards at the end during the stupid song Lisa sang at the end (Co-incidence? I think not).

I'm going to finish with the narrators lines at the end of the episode:

Narrator "I bet a lot of folks are wondering: Did this story REALLY happen?"

Me: "OH GOOD GOD! I HOPE NOT!"

    Narrator: "Well it did."

Me: [Rips out computer monitor and throws it across the room.]

-[TREE(3)] / 5 (If ya don't know what Tree(3) is, google it. I think you'll find my score very generous.)

I've had some further thoughts on this episode.

1 - It seems to fall under the category of "Hard to Watch." Somehow I don't think this is a good attribute for a TV show.

    Certainly an unpopular episode!

Before it even begins, the guest star is going to play a big role in how much you like or dislike the episode. If you dislike Lady Gaga, there's very little chance you'll enjoy the episode. If you're a fan or largely neutral towards her, that's not going to be an issue. I lean towards being fairly neutral, so the concept alone didn't put me off. I thought Lady Gaga's performance was fine, certainly no worse than any other guest star who isn't an experienced actor, and she had some good lines, including a couple of self-deprecating ones. The moment with Moe at the end certainly stands out as some good dark/acerbic humour.

Unfortunately, that's where the positives end for me. While I don't mind Lady Gaga guest starring, she certainly had too big of a role. That needn't have necessarily been a bad thing, but there was basically a lot of fawning over her. I don't think the show necessarily has to be too vicious towards guest stars, and certainly not outright mean-spirited, but it was too much. The end result is that a potentially entertaining and humorous plot revolving around cheering Lisa up instead comes across like bad fan-fiction from someone who's a big fan of The Simpsons and Lady Gaga, and has her visit Springfield just because. Ranty Lisa is also pretty grating, even when she has a point, and there was too much meanness in her being named least popular student (and then Bart unmasking her sock puppet). As such, the episode got rather unpleasant in parts.

I feel like there was potential for a more decent episode, but the way they ended up using Lada Gaga held it back instead of making it funnier. I'd give it a 1/5. It doesn't outrage me or anything, but it just falls completely flat.
A little less Generic than before.

After doing some math, I found out that this episode has a NHC rating average of 1.57. This could possibly be the lowest rated episode in NHC history.
