    Something about Season 9...

I don't know what to do in the holidays. And I remembered something...

The results were shocking. First I thought that this is the worst season only in the Scully Era, but after rewatching it turned out that it's also the Worst. Season. EVER!

Without much further ado, here are my points:

The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson- 10\10
The Principal and the Pauper- 0\10
    Lisa's Sax- 10\10
    Treehouse of Horror VIII- 4.5\10
    The Cartridge Family- 0\10
    Bart Star- 2.0\10
    The Two Mrs Nahasapeemapetilons- 6.0\10
    Lisa the Skeptic- 7.0\10
    Realty Bites- 2.0\10
    Miracle on Evergreen Terrace- 0\10
    All Singing, All Dancing- 0\10
    Bart Carny- 4.0\10
    The Joy of Sect- 10\10
    Das Bus- 10\10
The Last Temptation of Krusty- 1.0\10
    Dumbbell Indemnity- 1.0\10
    Lisa the Simpson- 0/10
    This Little Wiggy- 5.0/10
    Simpson Tide- 5.0/10
    The Trouble With Trillions- 5.0/10
    Girly Edition- 7.0\10
    Trash of the Titans- 4.0/10
    King of the Hill- 9.0\10
    Lost Our Lisa- 10/10
    Natural Born Kissers- 1.0/10

    Season 9 average: 4.62/10

    Can I explain?

The Principal and the Pauper, Bart Star, Realty Bites, The Last Temptation of Krusty- boring, unfunny episodes with awful plots. Plus in Bart Star we also could see the first appearance of the Jerkass Homer

Treehosue of Horror VIII- First part was excellent, second was decent, but not great, and the last... that was boring. And awful intro.

    The Cartridge Family-

And the first episode to air after such a long time of watching nothing but taped episodes was The Cartridge Family which massively failed to deliver.. It didn't live to my expectations and my idea of what Simpsons used to mean to me during that waiting period. It was just a huge WTF for me and in a way it became a symbol of the beginning of show's decline.. Couple of good jokes can't change the general uncomfortable feeling I get while watching it.

Agree, and OOC of all Sprinfieldian. And THAT:

    Retarded Marge?

All Singing, All Dancing- No comments

Dumbbell Indemnity- Boring, unfunny and- your applause!-Batstard Moe!

Lisa the Simpson- well, idea is already awful. Execution was even worse. That isn't a Jerkass Homer. that's Retarded Homer. Plus Retarded Simpsons Men, final Homer and Bart scene. B-plot... if Season 11 is retarded and wacky, then this is retarded^5 and wacky^3.

Natural Born Kissers- it was more like a Family Guy average episode, than a "classic" episode of the "classic" season.

So... this isn't a season, this is catastrophe, even worse than this:

Even Season 19 average was 5.05/10. For comparison: My Season 11 average- 7.75/10

Why is it that whenever a character acts in a negative way, they're labeled as a "jerkass"? Is the show meant to be sunshine and rainbows all the time?
Favourite/least favourite by seasons that I own (somewhat stolen from Financial Panther):

    3 - Dog of Death/When Flanders Failed 4 - Lisa's First Word/So it's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show 5 - Secrets of a Successful Marriage/Bart's Inner Child 6 - And Maggie Makes Three/Another Simpsons Clip Show 7 - Marge Be Not Proud/Bart the Fink 8 - Homer's Phobia/The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase 9 - King of the Hill/Trash of the Titans 10 - Wild Barts Can't Be Broken/Maximum Homerdrive

Anyway, the only episodes I disliked in that season are Trash of the Titans and The Joy of Sect. If I had to give an overall rating to the season, it'd probably be a B+.

"Jerkass" is a term referring to a character being deliberately mean spirited, and no almost no reason. Moe wasn't a "jerkass" in Dumbbell Indemnity, he was just a glimpse of sappy Moe from the Jean era.

As for "awful plots", what's wrong with Bart taking up (and sucking at) a sport? Or Krusty discovering that his style of comedy is outdated?

I almost completely disagree (apart from me not liking Realty Bites or Principal and The Pauper), but I guess you're entitled to your opinion.

Season 9 is my second favorite season. If it is indeed the beginning of "jerkass Homer," it's still to a degree where he's still extremely entertaining

I completely agree on "Lisa The Simpson". The main idea of the episode is ridiculous and the only somewhat funny scene in this episode is Lisa imagining being married to Ralph Wiggum. For me, this is one of the worst episodes in the series. Even the episode about a talking bar rag is better.

Other than "Lisa The Simpson", the overall season is not that bad. There are some very good episodes, after all.

I'm not bothered about the prominence of 'jerkass Homer' - admittedly, the character changed, but so did the entire style of the show. I just find a large part of Season 9 to be a bland combination of dull attempts at O&W style writing and Scully whackiness.

There are good episodes however, and the classic era was evidently still fresh in the writers' minds, so it's probably superior to the rest of the Scully era for me. I do have a fondness for the all-out Scully style of Seasons 11 and 12 but it seemed to produce just as many tedious episodes.

The fact that you liberally hand out 0/10s and 10/10s to episodes that really aren't that different to each other suggests to me that these reviews aren't worth commenting on. Goodnight everyone!

    G'night Moe!

(this got 20 thumbs up before things changed. remember that)

How does this show maintain an audience after so many years?

    I'm DYING to know!

Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.

It's good for the most part, but a hodgepodge of classic and post-classic episodes. That four different showrunning regimes contributed episodes to this season makes for some inconsistency for sure.

Highlights: The Holdovers, the Joy of Sect, The Cartridge Family, Natural Born Kissers
Lowlights: Trash of the Titans, All Singing All Dancing, The Last Temptation of Krust

pretty inconsistent season to me, as one episode would be a 5/5, the next 2/5, the next 4/5, etc.

the first 'bad' season, but not nearly as bad as some of the stuff that came after.

Yeah, tell me about it, it's like bizarro world in here sometimes where all the episodes that made a season good are now terrible while marginal or just plain shit episodes are great.

This season is classic era worthy in my eyes. The mix of several showrunners offered a variety of styles. This is Mike Scully at his best in my opinion, and I will continue to call this the last classic season.

For the record I voted mediocre. The first half was pretty consistent but by the second half the Scully era was in full flight. Even the David Mirkin episode "The Joy Of Sect" was nothing to write home about. "Lisa the Simpson" (Oakley/Weinstein) was actually one of the standouts of the second half of season 9.

Technically, the viewership numbers have been dwindling (with some fluctuations) ever since season 1, haven't they?

Besides, a couple of bad episodes per season is not enough to drive many people away from the show. How come after horrendous season 18 people are still watching The Simpsons?

  25. #25

I really don't see what's so objectionable about The Cartridge Family, it's a very funny episode and "homer as gun nut" doesn't seem an outrageous stretch, at least as far as the purposes of this episode are concerned. It certainly feels no worse tp me than "Homer as homophobe". The episode also feels much better structured compared to most Scully era episodes with the conflict and resolution progressing quite naturally. I'd also point out that it's a bit rich complaining about Jerkass Homer in Bart Star only to give Trash of the Titans 10/10, even though I rather like TotT and am not so keen on Bart Star.

    My comment still stands.

I mean, how could you not like the sequence where Homer waits for that gun for a week?

Giving this a 0 is a little bit far fetched, don't ya think?

IMO "Miracle on Evergreen Terrace" was the seminal last episode of the classic era for me. "Trash of the Titans" pretty much gets what it deserves.
