Grin If you could change one thing about the new Simpsons, what would it be?

The title is pretty self-explanatory. Please don't say general things like "make the new simpsons more like the classic simpsons" or something like that. Specifics, people!! I'm curious as to what all you fine, intelligent people would do to improve the show, and I'm also crossing my fingers that someone from the show will read this thread and HEED OUR COMPLAINTS (I don't care how preposterous the latter is, I'm going to keep hoping anyhow!).
PS. I don't want like a million "cancel it"'s either. Please, let's make this mentally stimulating, shall we?

Give us SMART surreal humor instead of generic wacky shit.
Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.

The writing process would be the main change for me. But I'm guessing Fox may have been trying to quicken that process up over the years. They have a reputation for trying to dilute the contributions from the creators and for forcing less rewrites from writers; in order to adhere to a tighter release schedule. Shame really, that the more successful a show the more the corporate desk-fellating corporate wank-monkeys feel the need to butt in, when it was the shows original methods that won the fans over in the first place.

Not that the show would be any good now anyway it's been 23 years and there's been several writing room changes and shortcuts taken. I just ignore most of the shows history now, so maybe I would change anything. Modern Simpsons is not a show I care about, it's legacy is already ruined, it deserves to die. Think of how many new, potentially better shows are failing to get made because networks are afraid to mix things up a bit and try something new.

I would say let us end the series at 25 seasons.. unlike Al Jeans evil plan of at least 40 seasons.

    That's what I would change.

I'd get rid of burnt-out terrible writers left over from the Scully era; namely John Frink, Tim Long, and Caroline Omine. When's the last time their names have been attatched to anything worth watching?

    Seasons 1-9 - Classic era
    10-12 - Scully era
    13-16 - Silver age
    16.5 - Into the abyss
    17 - The shit abyss
    18-24 - Zombie Simpsons

    - Don't have some crazy story revolving around a celebrity every show.
    - I don't know if they still do, but I'm sure they do: Stop the extremely lame puns for the episode's names. (even though that isn't the most important thing, it says a lot about what the show is aiming for)

Erase seasons 10-12 and 17-Present, then make Holidays of Future Passed the Finale.

Less guest appearances, better stories and character development.

Oh in all seriousness I definitely agree on less guests. Only half the episodes of the season at most, excluding regulars like Marcia Wallace of course...

get back to fully rounded funny characterisation, particularly Homer. Kills tow birds with one stone by bringing back likeability for the characters and if they keep up these characteristics removing the crappier Jerkass Homer/Fundie Flanders/Weepy Moe/Needy Burns etc. jokes

Most of the ones in the Running gags that just disappeared thread at the bottom of page 1 on General Discussion.

My favourites were things like Homer talking to his brain (or vice versa), Eye On Springfield, fantasy sequences like Slumberland in Lisa's Pony and Donut Court in Simpson Tide, etc, file photos, Mcbain and Mcgonigle style movie parodies, just to name a few.

The show probably still does some of these in some way, but the style and execution in the classic era was amazing. Many of these gags were lost due to the writers running out of ways to use them at the time, but I'm sure they could revive them with a little effort.

I want some old running gags to return. And get rid of guest stars who play themselves. If anything, guest stars are only good if they play a character.

Less 'up to date' technology! Have them in a mid 1990s era setting.
