In the mid '80s Strawberry looked like the next superstar in baseball. People were comparing him to Ted Williams(but with all star caliber defense!) Theres a sunfroof. Oh looky looky looky. Thats where Strawberrys carrer went. What an asshole, I loved me some Strawberry back in the day.

Strawberry was a talented player, but he was hardly in Ted Williams category as he didn't hit for average. He struck-out alot, but when he connected it was all over. Those coked up Mets teams from the 80's though were one of my favourite baseball teams of all-time.

You bring up good points, I remember that season in '87 when Strawberry joined the 30/30 club, that was a tremendous season for him.He defintely was one of the top young stars of the 80's . I agree that Ted Williams isn't the greatest hitter of all time, but by your logic Babe Ruth played the majority of his games at Yankee Stadium with the short porch in right. Cobb is probably the best of all time if I had to choose.

The way Adam Scott lost it with 4 straight bogeys was heartbreaking. I'm a big fan of his, but I'm also a big Ernie fan. Els went through a lot of self doubt to get back to where he is now the last few years. To win a major in three different decades is an amazing feat accomplished by only 5 other players. His place in history is secure.

Yankee Stadium, with the short porch in right, opened in 1923. Babe Ruth had his 2 best hitting seasons in 1920, and 1921.

Im a big baseball history junkie. Alot of people disregard Ruths stats, becaue baseball wasnt intergrated when he played. That is nonsense.

Back in Ruth's day, the MLB teams would go on "barnstorming tours", in the offseason. They would play the top non MLB all star teams from around the country, often making more than they earned from the MLB season. The biggest draw was always when the Yankees(or some other team Ruth was playing for that offseason) would play against the Negro League All Star teams. Babe Ruth destroyed the Negro League pitching. There are many quotes from the old Negro League greats, saying that Ruth was the best they ever saw. Keep in mind, to the Negro Leaguers, this was their World Series, it was their chance to prove to the country that they were just as good as the whites.

In the famous "called shot" game, against the Cubs, and what has almost been erased from history, is the Cubs fans were chanting "Nigger", every time Ruth was at bat. It was a popular belief back then, that Babe Ruth was partially black. Thats neither here nor there, but it is a part of baseball history.

His years in 20 and 21 were similar to his seasons in Yankee Stadium. What does stand out is that .847 and .846 slugging percentage of those years, crazy numbers. I guess the 60 HR's he hit in 1927 skewed my thinking a bit. Also of note, as soon as Yankee Stadium opened he hit a career high .393 in 1923, just food for thought.

From what Ive read, Ruth hit more homers on the road, then at home. Some of the ballbarks Ruth played in were huge. If I remember correctly, the ballpark in Washington D.C. so was so huge, that no player hit a ball out of the park, for ten years.........except for Ruth. It was 500 or more feet to center field, and Ruth was the only player, in the history of the park, to homer there.

In Ruths day, they used to mark where his homers landed, its a shame that all that has been lost to history. The guy who wrote, "The Year Babe Ruth hit 104 Home Runs" travelled around the country, and studied all the newspaper reports, of where Ruth's homers landed. He determined that Ruth would have hit 104 home runs, in one season, if he played into todays ballparks.

I just read he hit two 500 footers in one series in 1921 at that park. Mickey Mantle and Negro Leaguer Josh Gibson were the only ones to hit ones over the left field bleachers. The "tape measure home run" originated there in 1953 with a reported 565 foot blast by Mantle. Quite a storied home run history indeed.

Nah, I've cheered for 3 different hockey teams, so I can identify with your stance. I can't believe I cheered for the Leafs back in the day, but they had Gilmour, Clarke and Potvin. The refs still screwed them over in the '93 playoffs, that should have been a Leafs-Habs final but Gretzky is untouchable when it comes to a double minor high-sticking penalty.
