Is John Swartzwelder the basis of...

...Ron Swanson from Parks and Recreation?

This is a crackpot theory that just occurred to me. I couldn't find anything on the Internet supporting said crackpot theory, so I figured I'd post it here.

    Evidence supporting:
    * Parks and Recreation was created by Simpsons writer Greg Daniels.
    * According to various Simpsons commentaries, Swartzwelder is a staunch libertarian, not unlike Swanson.
    * They're both burly men with mustaches.
    * Their last names start with the same three letters. Now that I think about it, even their first names rhyme.
    * In the only episode that features Swartzwelder in a DVD commentary ('Cartridge Family'), the writers call him up and ask what he's doing. Swartzwelder answers, "I'm cooking a steak." This is exactly what Ron Swanson would be doing if you randomly called him up.

I just hope this means Swartzwelder has a secret life as a jazz musician.

    I wouldn't be surprised.

    Best.

    Thread.

    Ever.

It's so completely and utterly perfect. It's amazing that no one (at least on here) has ever come up with this connection, even if it is a bizarre subconscious coincidence.

And remember the story Oakley and Weinstein told how Swartzwelder would sit at a booth in a diner and spend a whole afternoon writing and smoking cigarettes. And how when the place closed, he bought the booth and put it in his home. If you can't imagine Ron Swanson doing that too, then you haven't watched P&R.

I thought "weird manly-man isolationist libertarian" was already a common archetype?

I've never watched Parks and Recreation, but I can see the resemblance.

That Swartzwelder picture was taken in 1992, though. I wish I could find a more current picture of the guy. Even Alan Moore wasn't so hard to find.

Off-topic to the original poster, nice avatar. I still have that Bart vs. the Space Mutants NES cartridge, even though my original console's long gone.

    More Swartzwelder "Head Shots"

Found this collection of the original 'Writers Room.' From the Old Simpsons Illustrated Fan magazine back in 1992:

This thread got mentioned: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...usaolp00000003 [edit: dang beaten to it]

If we're up for some mindless (and when I say that, I mean it) Swartzwelder speculation...

-A man named John J. Swartzwelder Sr. died on April 1st. He could well have been John Swartzwelder's father...
-He was born in Renton. Some guy added to Swartzwelder's Wiki page that he was born in Renton. (see how mindless this is already?)
-He has two sons, one unsurprisingly also being called John
-Said John lives in Los Angeles; as does his brother Steve. I recall someone in Ortved saying Swartwelder lived in the California mountains with his brother
-And blow me down if the guy on the right doesn't look like Swartwelder

Whatever the case, condolences to the family of Swartzwelder Sr.

Swartzwelder does indeed live with his brother, and his brother is named Steve. Must be his dad.

Them basing Ron Swanson on him would be cool. I can see it being true.

I highly doubt it. The guy's like sasquatch, man.

From everything I knew of Swartzwelder in my early teen Simpsons craze years, it only actually occurs to me now that this is the first time I've seen a picture of him. Amazing.

Great thread. This has actually made me want to try Parks and Rec, everyone on the audio commentaries say Swartzwelder is a genuinely funny guy.

Who would've thought that members of Boards & Recreation would love anything Parks & Recreation related?

So, if SpaceMutant's post is popular now, appearing on other websites, then I'll revel in the glory of being the first person to "thumb up" his post.

Ugh huh huh huh. I'm popular.
