A Springfield is in Oregon; 21 states leave Union

Suppose someone should post this... Matt's gone and done an interview where he "finally" reveals what he named Springfield after, and surprise, surprise, it's the Springfield in his home state of Oregon. Although in the same paragraph he also says he named it after Father Knows Best.

I'm sure this is shocking information to literally no one, but there you go. I'm sure he's said it before and if not, it's hardly surprising. Note how I have bolded "named" because that does not mean the same as "located" as about seven people have already decided to think it does on the Wikipedia page.

Uh, he's always alluded to Springfield as being connected to Oregon. Now, he's just not being as coy about it.
Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.

Yup, Matt likes to talk about his origins in Oregon.

    Ah crap, tongue twister.

^^THANK YOU. I knew this wasn't new information. Also he's just saying Springfield, Oregon was the inspiration not that it's actually the state in the show.

I like that the news outlets are declaring this as meaning the show's Springfield is in Oregon, which I'm pretty sure wasn't Groening's intentions.

I think Matt Groening was inspired by the life in Oregon, but the Simpsons family lives in another Springfield. I forgot but I think it was based on Portland (?). Anyways if you look at the documentary of The Simpsons in the 20th Anniversary Special, Groening stated that somewhere in the film. I believe he said that many characters of the show were based off of the street names. A very interesting documentary though, fun thing to watch even though it is three years old now.

If you go to downtown Portland and walk around... you realize some of the street names were used when naming Simpsons characters.

And I've heard Matt mention this before in interviews/specials... but in person it's actually pretty cool to see Flanders, Wiggum, and Lovejoy street signs.

I've often thought that Oregon would be the most logical location for Springfield, anyway.

I always hear the town was partially based on Pickering Ontario's layout, its similar and has a nuclear plant

I knew it was based on Oregon before I even read the article. I mean, come on, can anyone really be THAT shocked? If you've watched the Morgan Spurlock documentary on The Simpsons, all of the answers were right there.

So I just read the interview and the most interesting little thing is how he comments on how the family was initially always worried about money but they got away from it to do more outlandish stories and how he misses that. Nothing we didn't know, but interesting that he actually commented on an issue that I've seen at least mentioned here a few times recently.

Yeah this isn't news, he's said this numerous times before. What did anyone expect? Of course it's going to be inspired by a town Groening grew up around. Never understood why anyone cared about this, it's a fictional town with fictional characters.

In Portland, there's a donut shop called Voo Doo Donuts...it would make sense since we all know how much cruellers are vital in Homer's diet.

Oregonians: ever been there? Heard about Voo Doo Donuts on Travel Channel.

Whoa whoa hold on. There's an Oregon? I thought that place was a myth.

I can see Homer trudging out of bed:

    HOMER:
    Time to eat the doughnuts...

Back on topic, well now that we've all been shown Springfield is connected Oregon, now we must find the location of BEDROCK.

We the citizens of Springfield, Vermont are greatly disappointed by this news. Our community had become known around the world as the "official" hometown of the Simpsons in 2007 after we beat out 13 other Springfields in a video contest. Originally we weren't even invited to participate in the contest because they didn't think we couldn't compete well with the larger Springfields. For a look back at the big Hollywood movie premiere in small town Vermont, visit The Simpsons Springfield Vermont website.

The Springfield in The Simpsons is only based on the Springfield in Oregon.

Here is a source that explains 11 reasons why the Springfield on The Simpsons is not in Oregon:

Yeah, it always made as much sense geographically as anywhere else that has been theorized - there is a lot of Californian influence in the town (not far away from Oregon) and if my memory is correct Simpson Tide reveals Springfield to be on the West Coast. I'm also recall something about Matt Greoning mentioning something relating to his hometown being behind Springfield around the time of the movie as towns with that name were getting a publicity boost, even though I think the one in Vermont won the movie premiere contest. I'm not absolutely sure on that one, though.

But yeah, the only real Springfield is in our televisions, since the writers have all grown up in and been influenced by very different areas.

It also should be necessary to know that in addition to Springfield being fictional, The Simpsons takes place in a geographically fictitious version of the USA. In the episodes "Itchy and Scratchyland" and "The Bob Next Door" there is a place called "five corners". There is no place in the real USA where 5 states meet. Not only that, "Mr Lisa goes to Washington" gives an indication that Springfield is in one of the states that is a "four corners state" and the state borders shown are nothing like the perfectly straight lines formed for Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. (But then the four corners states are not the same in the Simpsons Movie so don't point that out to me)

And while we're on the subject of cartoon locals, besides Bedrock, we need to know the EXACT locations of:

    Riverdale (The Archies)

    Lawndale (Daria)

    The Banana Splits' clubhouse

    The Krabby Patty (SpongeBob Squarepants)

    Mordhaus (Dethklok, aka Metalocalypse)

    The planet the Jetsons reside

    Jellystone Park (Yogi Bear)

    Bugs Bunny's rabbit hole...and Daffy Duck's pond.

EXACT locale in Mexico where Speedy Gonzales resides

That's all I can think of...my fellow veteran cartton fans can fill in more cartoon locales!
