Er... how about the Top 3?

Besides, you can't judge "all music" by looking at the 100 most popular songs. So yeah, your generalization was kinda overly simplified.

I don't see why a song has to be great by coming up with a new genre, anyway. What's wrong with working with the ones we have? Just because the past invented new genres doesn't mean there's a sudden obligation to do so again.
Favourite/least favourite by seasons that I own (somewhat stolen from Financial Panther):

    3 - Dog of Death/When Flanders Failed 4 - Lisa's First Word/So it's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show 5 - Secrets of a Successful Marriage/Bart's Inner Child 6 - And Maggie Makes Three/Another Simpsons Clip Show 7 - Marge Be Not Proud/Bart the Fink 8 - Homer's Phobia/The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase 9 - King of the Hill/Trash of the Titans 10 - Wild Barts Can't Be Broken/Maximum Homerdrive

Radio has given you the wrong perception of all music of today, I suggest you start listening to more underground music and not what's on the radio. Not all music nowadays is commercial(ized), the majority of dark ambient and black/death metal bands out there in fact are venomously opposed to commercial music. Take Cannibal Corpse as an example, they're not commercial. I will agree however that the majority of music out there these days is commercial.

it's just annoying. i follow people on twitter because i want interesting tweets (or because they follow me, and i follow everyone who follows me; unless they retweet too much).

i made a joke tweet a while ago about how if i wanted to know who to follow, i'd follow an account that told 'popular' people to follow. a lot of the time, besides retweets, i get tweets from accounts like "follow (insert twitter account here), SO FUNNY!" (it also doesn't help that half the time, the other account really isn't funny)

I'm not judging all music, I'm just judging the music that's popular on the radio. A lot of the songs in the past have been on that list at one time or another and those songs still keep getting plays despite the age of it. A timeless song to me is something that manages to still retain it's charm and appeal 20 years after it's release date.

It doesn't; I'm just noting the various genres associated with eras and the genres that defined them as a whole. No song has to come up with a new genre to be great, it just has to be entertaining and memorable.

I barely listen to the popular stations on the radio (though I do listen to a few stations that I like.) and the stuff I have listened to seems to mainly consist of dance-pop or southern hip-hop. I'm aware of the existence of underground music, hell; I live in a house that has tons of underground punk music for me to listen to. What I'm trying to note is the music that's defining a culture; look back to the past, off the top of my head we've had artists like Queen, Nirvana, Metallica, Chic and Weezer; all bands who have had an impact in popular culture and are still being talked about today, every era has a band that has made it's way into impromptu popular culture, some for the stuff they did but many for the music they made, and the ratio was much higher back them. We may have a wider variety of music now and more distribution options then we had back then (leading to the decline of record labels) but we have more segregation then we did back then; there are various genres, each with their own popular songs. Many of those songs are only known to those who are following the genre and not to the general public, which still listens to music the traditional way.

The problem is that this new music isn't reaching the general public (one of my fears is how will I let people know about this, how will people know about my album, how will I promote and distribute it?), the internet may have more options but there's still a griphold when it comes to what music becomes popular and what's not. Clear Channel is the worst offender because they're prioritizing profit over music and they own the majority of radio stations across the country, even worse is that they hold corporate republican views that strictly limits what music can be played and what's even worse is that they're dipping their toes into the whole independent artists getting ratio attention thing by starting a service that allows people like us to upload songs for possible radio play. You have to force yourself to make a song that won't offend Clear Channel because if it contains a political message or anything that they consider offensive, you're not getting played. Compare that to Emmis Communications, they own less stations, allow their stations more freedom, play somewhat better music and has a better grasp at the consumer then Clear Channel does, even though they play most of the same music they do, the fact that they focus on the core essentials of the radio station makes Emmis a better company, but it doesn't make it the best.

What they need to do is abolish the Clear Channel way and whatever they stand for; they're the biggest, they're the ones who decide if your music gets popular, they turn local stations and make them into automated crap, they don't care about you at all. If we abolish that then maybe the other radio companies will see the error of their ways and adapt so that this new type of music can get played in avenues where almost anybody can hear it. Nobody wants to republicanize their songs, they want to release the songs the way they are. It's a shame where we're living in a world where the largest most republican companies have the most power; if only we could get those acts giving corporations more power repealed.

How can you judge whether a song will be popular in 20 years if 20 years hasn't passed? Anyway, not everything from 20 years ago that's still remembered today is great. Example? Vanilla fucking Ice.

I think that there are certain popular songs today (Somebody That I Used To Know, We Are Young) that will be remembered 20 years from now. Even so, being remembered doesn't necessarily mean "good", and vice versa. There are songs from the '90s that I completely forgot existed until I catch them on the radio, and I think "oh yeah, that song was great".

Remakes. I didn't use to mind them and some of the old ones like Night of the living dead and The Thing are pretty good. But nowadays they're remaking EVERYTHING. And they rarely manage to reach the same quality as the original.

In the same vein, there are too many damn sequels today. It's like nobody can write an original script anymore.

Trying, on foot, to cut across a full parking lot diagonally while cars zig-zag, looking for a spot, at a speed that forces you to stop and stand awkwardly before passing each lane. It's most annoying when it's just one car that manages to do this all the way through. It's not something that I feel enraged by, but it just happens to me every day, even when it feels like for once it won't. Sometimes I wonder how comical it must look from an overhead shot above, like God's twisted sense of humor.

People making bodily noises when they wake up and hence waking me up in the process.
I got very angry at my brother for this one day.
In retrospect, I think I should have been a bit more sympathetic.

The guy living above me in the apartment complex where I reside in is really getting on my nerves. The guy is probably a whopping 110 lbs but stomps around up there like he's an elephant doing kung fu! My wife tells me to relax because it's not that big of a deal but I'm about ready to kick his door down and throw him off his balcony! THE STOMPING HAPPENS EVERY FRICKIN' DAY!

It's hard to describe what gives a song that popular appeal; to me, it's a song that's still as listenable and fresh as the day I bought it. I'm aware of everything that's remembered today isn't great but I'm talking about the songs that manage to transcend barriers and sound fresh and entertaining in any era, not just the one it's released in.

See, I can name a fair number of songs from this era that still sound fresh after a few listens. I'd say it's about half-and-half for me; half the songs are great, half just suck.

Video games. Well... used to. I sold my consoles to fight my addiction and I feel much better sociable-wise. Anyways, playing a game used to make me angry, particularly Guitar Hero. I would usually sweat during the game in order to get it exactly perfect and whenever I made a mistake, I'd usually scream "FUCK!" and almost smash my guitar on the ground. I shouldn't be angry at this because whenever you make a mistake, you must learn from it. Don't stop there, keep going.

Also, whenever a show ends with a cliffhanger or questions that need to be answered in "next week's episode". This would generally piss me off unintentionally, until I learned that it's because they want to draw their viewers into wondering what happens next, therefore making them tune in the preceding week to find out. And since I want to head in that direction during my life (writer), I guess I shouldn't feel angry about this because I'd no doubt use it for my creations or else I'll lose viewers.

Then again, I do have slight anger management so that may be the problem.

These True Life shows really piss me off. There was this one about girls breaking up with their boyfriends and kicking them out and there was this one girl whining and begging her friend for money to help pay rent. Look, if you weren't such a dumb ass and a selfish bitch, you would still have your roommate and your boyfriend. This kind of show and Teen Mom just annoy the hell out of me. I don't watch these by choice, my wife watches this garbage!

dunno why but i really like cliffhangers. it's fun to guess what will happen next week (or next season if the show ends seasons on cliffhangers).

if i ever do go into tv production i plan on a bunch of cliffhangers. so you may hate me, leprechaun_dan, assuming you don't already for whatever reason

Yeah, most television annoys me. I often get snarky with friends and family who look forward to watching incredibly bland shows. Not sure what it's like in the US but a lot of British television is devoid of any real variety/intelligent programming at all.

I feel like I get upset when there's no cliffhanger although I really shouldn't be, because many episodes are great as standalones. Not that every episode in a serial drama needs one, but when following the overall plot of the season, cliffhangers are very reassuring the momentum will keep up. Also, waiting for the next episode doesn't bother me, because I like the idea that ten years from now, I can look back at a cliffhanger and feel grateful I was a part of the waiting/speculation process. The nostalgia of remembering your reaction to a really intense cliffhanger goes a long way.

i hate when one of my facebook friends makes a status saying "I'm going to delete some of my friends. If you're one, sorry" or something similar.

it just comes across as "I'm so cool, I'm going to delete some of my friends because I have so many" (or whatever reason, but that's the one i see most often).

if you're going to delete people, do it. don't post it as a status. or just don't delete people

I get angry at those statuses that target an unnamed person. I'm always tempted to comment on them and act really offended, as if they were talking to me.

I get angry at a lot of Facebook-related crap. First of all, joe, you're absolutely spot on about that. Second, attention-seeking idiots who express their problems on Facebook about someone they don't like in hopes of sorting it, but instead they're expanding it and making it worse. And people who make those "like this status and I'll bla-dee-bla-dee-bla" statuses.

In fact, one of my friends who can be a total dick at times, made a status which read "Like this status" and he got 70 likes. I really really hate people sometimes.

And this shouldn't make me angry because it's Facebook and it'll stay this way, won't change at all. I may as well forget it and move on
