    Episodic Minority

Are there any episodes that you seem to be in a small minority for either loving, loathing, liking or disliking?

I hear a lot of dislike for 'Tennis the Menace' when I found it to be a pretty funny episode

I also found 'Holiday of Future's Past' to be really average when many people were raving about it...

Aside from much of the past 13 years? A Star is Burns is still in my personal top 5 episodes of all time.

I hate Homer's enemy, and yes, I get it was supposed to be an experiment to see a relatively normal person in Springfield.
Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.

Liking almost all of season 1, especially "Homer's Odyssey", "There's No Disgrace Like Home" and "The Tell-Tale Head"

Disliking the majority of the second half of season 9. One episode that I see praised alot on here, "Simpson Tide", would be the standout difference of opinion.
Also not liking "All Singing, All Dancing", while most people are indifferent to it.

    Overrated

"Dead Putting Society" - Very, Very bad characterization and it's not funny
"Mr. Plow" - I just don't find this one very entertaining and the plot is quite disjointed
"A Star is Burns" - The plot was thin and just felt like it was made to use the Critic

    Underrated

"A Streetcar Named Marge" - A fantastic, emotional and hilarious main story with a brilliant subplot
"Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase" - Brilliant portrayal of the crumminess of Spin-Offs and Troy McClure was on top form (As always)
"Bart the Mother" - A sweet Marge and Bart episode with a lot of great jokes

    More later...

You should have been on here 5 years ago. This episode was in a lot of people's top ten.

I find Dead Putting Society very underated on here, much like Bart of Darkness which was up in 33 on the top 100 list. Same with I love Lisa which was very high.

Apart from that Trilogy of Error and Eternal Moonshine are rated quite highly which is bemusing to say the least.

That 90s Show is one of those odd duck episodes that is possible to enjoy if you're able to consciously ignore how it takes a dump on the continuity established in every flashback episode that preceded it. Selman's one of the few ultra-talented writers the show has left in its stable and the episode is fine when treated as some alternate universe tale as it does have strong characterizations and the Nirvana parody is pretty inspired.

I like There's No Disgrace Like Home, Bart Gets an Elephant, The Otto Show, Radioactive Man, Burns, Baby Burns, Trash of the Titans, The Trouble with Trillions and Homer's Odyssey. I quite like When You Dish Upon A Star. I find Saddlesore Galactica and Bart-Mangled Banner okay (although I haven't seen either in years)

Moe Baby Blues, Eternal Moonshine of the Simpsons Mind, Holidays of Future Passed and Trilogy of Error are all overrated. They're quite good but nowhere near classics.

I prefer Season 11 to Season 13 (but again, haven't seen either one in a while)

    I prefer Season 2 to Season 4

I'm not a huge fan of Homer at the Bat, even though it's from one of the very strongest seasons of the show and does have some decent jokes nonetheless. It's one of the best of its format on the show (doesn't match Krusty Gets Kancelled but much better than any later guest star episodes) and the pacing and writing on the episode is good but really it doesn't particularly grab me.

I found 'Holidays of Future Passed' quite bland and uninteresting. The characters did feel like humans rather than cartoons but it doesn't stop the fact I barely gave out a chuckle during the episode.

I might get murdered for this but 'Simpson Safari' isn't as bad as people make it out to be in my opinion. Yes it's a poor episode, but not in my 'worst 20'.

    Oh boy, here we go.

NOTE: An episode I say I like a lot more than most MUST STILL BE ABOVE-AVERAGE in my eyes. The same goes with the episodes I dislike more than most; they must be below-average. For example, I don't find Lisa's Substitute as great as most people, but as I don't find it below-average, I will not put it on my list. This is to keep it from appearing that I am a big fan of Kill Gil or a hater of Lisa's Substitute.

Episodes I Like a Lot More than Most

    Lisa the Greek
    Bart's Friend Falls in Love
    Brother From the Same Planet
    Bart's Comet

    Saddlesore Galactica
    Homer vs. Dignity

Episodes I Dislike a Lot More than Most

When scoring the Top 100 lists, I found that people like three episodes waaaaaaaay more than me. In particular, Homer vs the Eighteenth Amendment, The Springfield Files, and Homer Badman.

I'm one of those people who gets really hung up on the ending of an episode (see my rant about Lisa the Iconoclast), and the ending of Homer Badman has always bugged me. They don't really foreshadow Groundskeeper Willie very well in the story, so the way it is written, he just feels like a big deus ex machina. Granted, they have to clear Homer somehow, but they could have definitely executed it better.

It's also a very angry and negative episode in general, so I don't really enjoy watching it much.

As for episodes I probably like more than others, probably Homer to the Max is the biggest one. People seem to hate that episode for some reason, but I think it's great. Yeah, it does go a bit off the rails in the 3rd act but the first two acts are almost flawless and even the 3rd act has some funny gags (like Ed Begley Jr's car).

I also like Homer the Moe. Sue me.

Nah, I said I don't like the ending of Lisa the Iconoclast. I'd have to find the rant post I made about it, but I believe I called it the biggest cheat ending of the Classic Era.

EDIT: That was easy to find. Hooray Advanced Search function.

They're basically saying that EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO WAS STARING EXPECTANTLY RIGHT AT THE COFFIN DIDN'T SEE THE GUY REACH TOWARD THE SKULL AND PULL SOMETHING OUT. That he just magically was able to see through the dust better than everyone else and then was able to grab it without being seen by anyone.

That is such garbage, and is definitely the kind of thing we would utterly destroy if it happened today. I would be somewhat okay with this if the reveal was in a jokey way or they lampshaded it, but the episode plays it so straight with the Dramatic Mystery Reveal that it makes me think the writers think this is a clever twist. And yeah, I guess it's surprising in a way but it's so utterly cheap and implausible.

(The first time I saw this episode, I assumed he exhumed the body by himself beforehand because I assumed no one could've pulled that off. But on subsequent viewings, it's clear that he means when he was with everyone else. Maybe I need to rewatch it and he really meant as they were prying open the case he saw it, but I don't remember it being framed that way either.)

And, ugh, then the guy goes ahead AND HIDES THE TONGUE IN THE MIDDLE OF A SET DISPLAY THAT EVERYONE CAN SEE. I mean, what the hell. Who on Earth would do something like that? Especially someone so concerned with the legend of Jebediah Springfield? It's so stupid it feels like it's a joke in the episode, but they play the moment completely straight.

I like the Homer/Lisa aspect of the episode and themes and stuff, but this Act 3 silliness with the tongue is really, really distracting for me.

Yes. The ending is the worst ending I've ever seen. It completely ruins the episode and leaves a sour taste in my mouth. It is my least favorite episode of the series.

On the contrary I think the ending was pretty much perfect.

That's fine. I'm a person who needs the truth to be told, and I can't stand liars. But I can see your point.

  27. #27

I've always liked Homer v.s Dignity (and I'm sure I'm one of the only members on here that likes the episode).

I've always hated Gone Maggie Gone (and on the french simpsons forum, a lot of the members consider it to be the strongest episode of Season 20 --> I don't like the atmosphere in the second half of the episode. It's just too crazy!!! Even if it's trying to parody The Da Vinci Code).

I don't have a problem with Homer vs. Dignity. In fact, I probably should write it in my list.

  29. #29

I'll tell you why I liked it FP. I liked the point that they made which is that sometimes not knowing the truth and being happy is better than knowing the truth and being miserable. Especially when you consider Jebediah Springfield was dead for hundreds of years or w.e. I think that having Lisa carry on her 'He's a fraud, you should all be ashamed' stance would have made for a very bad ending.

It would've certainly been a wackier ending, yes, but I still would've preferred it to what we got. Just my opinion, though.
