    Which character declined the least?

Some awesomely deep and hilarious characters in seasons 1-8 have really become crappy. Either they became one line gags or just make you cringe at how they never fit right into a scene or just are unfunny now. One example is Chalmers, one of the great characters from the classic era, who was just aweful in some more recent episodes, especially that one he starred in. Basically that is all the characters though.

But are there any characters that are still great every time they show up? I have no idea what the answer to that is. Maybe Maggie off the top of my head?

Sideshow Mel has always been irritating, so in a way he hasn't declined much

Well, that really depends if you're talking about round or flat characters. That flat character I would find to have declined the least might be Groundskeeper Willie. He seems to be just like he always was. The round character would be tougher. I'd probably go for Moe.

I don't think Chief Wiggum has got that much worse, but I think that that's just because he's an easy character to write for. He's always been an incompetent cop played for gags.

Moe has changed drastically. He's gone from being the shifty, stiff bartender to a weirdo who befriends rags and contemplates suicide every other episode he's in. I'd say Chief Wiggum and Fat Tony, but they were never very important characters.
Out of the family, I'd say Marge.

edit: I just realised that they technically killed off Fat Tony in a plot almost as nonsensical and stupid as the Principal and the Pauper, so I guess he has changed quite a lot.

Maybe, except there was some episode in Season 21 that basically wrecked his character.

I'd probably say Moe or Nelson, though both have changed and some hate what they've become I actually think they are both still very enjoyable characters for the most part. Some episodes with them have bombed but I mean Moe Baby Blues, Eeny Teeny Maya Moe, Moe Letter Blues? I enjoy them all to an extent at least. I don't mind Moe in Rags to Riches or that American Idol episode either, but the American Idol plot was inherently bad and shouldn't have been made with anyone and Rags seems to be considered horrible but I just consider it different, probably another story that really shouldn't have been attempted...Nelson has Sleeping With the Enemy and The Haw-Hawed Couple, two episodes I hold in high regard. He appears in others too I guess like Loan-a-Lisa, but I consider that one "alright" and don't mind Nelson in it really at all. His shift from antagonist to second only to Milhouse as Bart's best friend is rather interesting.

I also enjoy several Flanders episodes during the Jean Era, but I know many hate the overly religious turn his character took so...

I have very bad recall of non classic era episodes, most of which I haven't seen in years, so it was kind of a shot in the dark. But I didn't remember her pissing me off much this season.

On a serious note, Cletus, because... well, he really didn't have much to decline on, since I always consider hillbilly/redneck characters to be those that can't really devel
