thanks to you too, financial panther
The couch gag for this milestone was pretty good. Other than special occasions like this they need to keep it short.
Just watched this, it's nowhere near a 5/5 episode, what are you people on? But one joke that was genuinely funny was Principal Skinner standing by himself in the abandoned Springfield.
A decent episode. Certainly not the best, but not the worst. I'll give it a 3/5.
Personally I thought this was easily one of the weaker episodes of the year which was really disappointing
a) Because it was the 500th episode
b) The plot sounded really interesting on paper and I think there was potential for a MUCH better episode
I get what they were trying to do making it in true Simpsons style, a massive change that was just forgotten the next week. But it didn't pay off at all and for me really put a damper on something as historic and rare as a 500th episode.
2/5

what i liked:
-the couch gag
-I pick up books like you pick up beers!
Then you have a serious reading condition
-I can drive drunk when I'm actually sober!
-Sideshow Bob's appearance
-"I withdraw my diddly."
-It wouldn't be you if you didn't say 'excellent'
-Cancel their subscription to the opera!
We hate the opera.
Then give them a subscription to the opera!
NOO!
The last act or so got kind of boring, but as a whole, it was decent. 3.5/5 rounded to a 4
Haven't watched a single new episode in ages and have only just returned to see this milestone episode.
I would say it's quite good. Story is a bit sloppy, definitely a rushed, silly ending. I felt the pacing was off due to how short the episode was. But the jokes were strong and I laughed quite a bit, additionally there were a lot of nice scenes such as Homer and Marge staring out over the starry sky and then having 'fugitive sex' hahaha. I like the lack of pop culture references compared to other new episodes. Julian Assange's appearance was brief, and, well... a bit awkward, but I think it was okay really.
I'll give this 3.75 GOLDEN MONKEYS OUT OF 5 rounded to 4 GOLDEN MONKEYS OUT OF 5!

Ugh....I just watched this again and boy did this suck. The whole rewatchability of the last couple of seasons totally suck ass.
What made this worse was the reasoning for the townsfolk following the family to the Outlands was stupid as fuck.

Watched this the other day and it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. Nothing was too cringeworthy and yet nothing was too funny. The plot and first two acts were decent but it sort of declined as soon as the family arrived at 'The Outlands', maybe if this hadn't been so rushed and they had done an hour long episode then it could have worked. 3/5
The ending was the worst thing ever. The bit with Bart going back to rescue Skinner. What the fuck. The funniest thing in the episode was Skinner being the only one left in Springfield, with that sad music playing. Why do they destroy good jokes. WHY. WHY THE FUCK. GISNDGKjsgkdnsbfksfd

Upon re-watching it, I'd say it's definitely one of the worse of season 23. The density of humor was not only low, it was not really entertaining either. For a milestone episode, this probably the most disappointing one (Other than the 300th episode). In addition to that, I could not have cared less about the guest star.
I am quite pleased with the couch gag montage for the 500th episode's opening. It brings not only a nostalgic look at the show's former glory, but also one of the most eye-catching one in the HD seasons. Despite the couch gag having its positive aspect, it did not compensate for the episode's poor execution that happened after the Simpsons moved into "The Outlands", nor the ending, which was indescribably stupid.
