The NHC Top 100 Episodes

The results have been tabulated, and it is now time for the results. All this week, we'll be counting down the Top 100 Simpsons episodes of all time, as hand-picked by out NHC members. We had a total of 47 lists submitted, with each member submitting their own Top 50.

Methodology was done using a similar system as the Bottom 50 list, so stats nerds can check that out. We'll be releasing 10-20 episodes at a time up to this Sunday, so feel free to pick apart the list as we go and/or declare things over/under-rated.

Yeah. There is a good chance that I would have voted for all of them had we been allowed to compile a list of 100. And there are some on the list that I DID vote for, so I obviously thought they deserved to be rated better than 81-100.

Mountain of Madness would be an exception for me. It had some amusing moments, but the launching of the propane tank was just too much non-funny wackiness for me and the episode in general left a bad taste in my mouth.

It is certainly better than just about everything after the 8th season, but it isn't quite top 100 worthy IMO.

I was kinda surprised that Mountain of Madness only finished #84 on the list. Even if the plot is kinda gimmicky sometimes, it is seriously one of the funniest episodes The Simpsons has ever done.

Lisa's Rival at 100 is not right IMO!!! That is in my top five, I think. Honestly I couldn't decide what my top 50 episodes were. Too dificult. Kudos to all of you that did it. I know where a few would go and I know Lisa's Rival would have been top 5. Can't wait for the rest

Lisa's Rival would have missed the Top 100 completely had I not bumped it up late. I believe the only Scully-and-later episodes (non-holdover Season 9+) to make the cut are Eternal Moonshine and one other (probably obvious) episode that will show up somewhere around the 50-60 mark.

It's a good episode but I don't think it quite has the quality and memorable scenes to earn a top 10 place, all about opinions tho.

My own take is that it's ridiculous that 'Bart the Murderer' is as low down as #97 - honestly it's an incredible episode - and that an Al Jean episode (EMOTSM) managed to slither its way into the top 100 but except for that, good list thus far.

What why? Also I agree Bart the Murderer is a bit too low. Two Bad Neighbours and A Star is Burns also both shouldn't be on this. But no real surprises at any of the episodes in these spots.

100. Lisa's Rival
I don't know how far down my top 100 would extend, if I did one. I don't think this would be included, though. Still, it's a pretty harmless episode that's about average for the classic era, so why the hell not.

99. When Flanders Failed
I find Homer being mean for a whole episode irritating, so I'm not too fond of this episode. I must be a hypocrite though, as Lisa on Ice was in my top 50. Maybe it's that I don't like it when Homer's meaness is directed towards one person, like in Dead Putting Society, which I'm also not majorly keen on. Also, I just plain don't like the ending of this episode, which is quite cheesy IMO.

98. I Married Marge
I haven't seen this one in a while, but I have positive memories of it, so I don't hold any objection to it being here. Maybe it should be higher, but I can't say that until I give it a rewatch.

97. Bart the Murderer
I think this should be a little higher. Though it wasn't in my top 50, I can see it being somewhere in the 70s or something like that.

96. Saturdays of Thunder
More season 3. Like Bart the Murderer, probably could be a little higher, but not by a lot, though.

95. Bart Gets Hit By a Car
Nah. This isn't one of Season 2s better episodes, and is more like top 200 material. It's got some good bits to it, but falls short of being a truly great episode.

94. Moaning Lisa
Sounds about right... possibly. My 3rd favourite episode of Season 1, but to be honest, I think only Life on the Fast Lane would realistically make it into my top 100. This episode is great, but that's as far as I'd go with it. I'm not sure if any B/B+ episodes would make the cut.

93. Two Bad Neighbors
A fun episode, but I don't think this deserves to be here. It isn't one of Season 7s better episodes. However, it is pretty low down, so I'm really not fussed.

92. Brother From the Same Planet
Why not. I enjoy this episode, and was considering putting it in my top 50, but didn't. Haven't seen it in a while, but I remember liking it.

91. Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind
Eh. The best of its season, but still overrated. I like the whole psychological bit, looking through Homer's mind. The episode loses steam after that. It's not one of the few non-classic episodes, that deserves to be here, in my opinion.

90. Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie
The weakest/second weakest Itchy & Scratchy based episode. The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show, The Day the Violence Died, Itchy and Scratchy and Marge and Itchy and Scratchy Land all deserve a spot in the top 100. I don't personally feel that this one does, though.

89. Bart the Daredevil
Fair enough, though I'd have liked it a bit higher. It is the funniest episode from Season 2, I feel.

88. Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy
I don't really object to this. Not sure if I'd have it in my top 100, but it's a harmless, slightly underrated episode, so no objections here.

87. Treehouse of Horror VI
Second best Treehouse of Horror (or third, I'm not sure). It roughly deserves its position here. Perhaps it should be a bit higher, but that's just a minor quibble.

86. Lisa the Greek
Might have this a little higher, but at least it found a spot in the top 100. Uh, nothing else to say on this really.

85. Homer vs Lisa and the 8th Commandment
I'd say this actually deserves to be here... or maybe a tad higher. It's a great episode, but isn't one of my favourite of the season. Sits somewhere in the middle. Like all of season 2, the story is great, but I find Lisa to be a bit forceful at times in this one.

84. Mountain of Madness
I can never make my mind up on whether I like this episode that much or not. Whenever I see it, I think it's quite average for the classic season, but when thinking about it afterwards, it always goes up in my opinion. Hard to say if this should be here or not. I'll let it slide.

83. Black Widower
I don't think I'd have it in my top 100. Not a bad episode, by any means, but not really worthy of 'one of the 100 best episodes of the show' title. At least it isn't higher than #82 - that deserves to be here, and deserves to be a lot higher.

82. Brother From Another Series
What. What. Whaaaaaaaaat. This deserves to be much higher. The only Bob episode better is Cape Feare, and even then, there's only a small distance in quality between them. This episode is witty, exciting, and wonderfully directed. This is about 60 places too low.

81. A Star is Burns
I don't think that this should be here. It isn't bad, but is one of the weaker episodes of Season 6. I guess I just don't care for the conflict between Homer and Jay - which takes up a lot of the middle of the episode. Neither do I find Jay to be a that funny character. The films the townsfolk make can be hilarious. This is only near the end of the episode, which doesn't make up for the dragging middle. Like Two Bad Neighbours though, it isn't too high, so I shouldn't complain that much.

I don't want LETS in the top 5, but I'm betting that it will be there. Bart Sells His Soul looks like it will be in the top 5 (possibly #1?), and I reckon Cape Feare will be, too. Not sure what the other two would be.

Not to spoil anything later on, but if Saddlesore Galactica (or The Bob Next Door for that matter) can't make #100-81, then you're probably in the clear.

Everyone will be doubtless be disappointed in some way but this will probably be quite a good overrall reflection. Personally though I'm disappointed to see Lisa the Greek and Lisa's Rival low in the rankings as I believe them to both be fantastic all-round episodes. As for speculation - Bart Sells His Soul seemed to show strongly in the lists and it'd be nice to see it clinch Number 1, but realistically it probably won't.

Still, very much looking forward to the rest of the results, thanks once again to Jims for running this.

Not all of those would make my top 100 (When Flanders Failed, Two Bad Neighbors, Eternal Moonshine), meaning I know some ones I love will be left out entirely. Nothing too unexpected though. The one I value much higher is Itchy & Scratchy: the Movie which I don't think gets its due. Treehouse of Horror VI deserves better than its placing as well, boasting two top-notch segments.
