In no particular order, five of my favorites:

1. New Kid on the Block. Conan O'Brien is on this one, and he offers some very interesting behind-the-scenes insights (Don Rickles was supposed to guest star as himself at one point, but he turned down the part) and goes off on some extremely funny tangents ("Yeah, everyone's here, they all have throat cancer, though.")
2. Treehouse of Horror V. David Mirkin explains where the inside-out fog came from, David X. Cohen reveals a deleted scene in which Homer wants to cook Milhouse, and Matt Groening sings the praises of B-grade maple syrup.
3. Marge Be Not Proud. Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein's breakneck recollection of what a harrowing experience it was to work with Lawrence Tierney is absolutely hysterical. "SHUT UP! WE'RE TRYIN' TO REHEARSE OVER HERE!"
4. Another Simpsons Clip Show. With only 23% new footage on the screen, David Mirkin, Matt Groening, and David Silverman instead tell the fascinating story of how an episode is made, from conception to broadcast. Lots of fond memories of writers' retreats are shared.
5. Deep Space Homer. Mark Kirkland's real-life tale of Homer Simpson in outer space is great, but what really makes this one stand out is Matt Groening's reaction to Homer turning into Richard Nixon. "Oh no, oh no, oh NO!"

I attest to the quality of 'Another Simpsons clip show'. That track teaches you how classic era Simpsons shows were written.

The Stan Lee commentary(I Am Furious Yellow) is one that entertains me greatly, but only because I love how they all react to him throughout. As far as Simpsonian information goes it isn't that good.

The Cartridge Family

For that one brief voice appearance (possibly) from the guy we all wanted to hear for the preceding eight seasons DVD releases. However Mountain of Madness and the aforementioned THOH V also spring to mind as being particularly funny/interesting - Dave Thomas as a poorly-treated 'contest winner' was pretty convincing.

I forgot Cartridge Family, between Swartzwelder and a funnier than usual Matt Groening that probably is one of my favorite commentaries.

The "Marge vs. Monorail" Episode is my fave they describe working with Conan O' Brian it had me literally on the floor laughing. I fell of the couch I was laughing so fucking hard. They also describe how he would go insane if he didn't host his own TV show or was an entertainer. I can totally understand what they are talking about.

Another Simpsons Clip Show is the most hillarious in a way. You get the impression that the commentators immediately acknowledge that the episode really isn't worth commenting on. I think there were only a couple of remarks related to it: 1. The changing of Moe's hair color from black to blue. 2. The 'amazing clip' from Life on the Fast Lane.

Haven't heard it in awhile, but I think I remember they talk about how it was made during that famous earthquake for a bit and David Mirkin comes off as funny/kinda obnoxious.....which is par for the course with him actually...

Does the commentary of Bart Of Darkness are good ?

It's a nice solid one. They discuss the North Ridge Earthquake, dish about the Star Trek episode that inspired this episode's Itchy and Scratchy, make fun of Dan McGrath's laugh, wheedle Jim Reardon for insider Pixar info (he was working on Wall-E at the time the commentary was recorded) and they go off on a tangent towards the end about Alvin and the Chipmunks creator Ross Bagdasarian (turns out he's the guy playing the piano in Rear Window).

Bart of Darkness is a very good commentary; David Silverman and Jim Reardon talk about the animators!

I haven't watched it in awhile but Mirkin continuing to bash Australia in the Bart vs. Australia commentary made me laugh pretty hard the first time. I agree with Wavy Gravy that the Marge Be Not Proud one is good also. The Lawrence Tierney story was probably the most interesting one I've heard from them.

It wasn't until today that I actually learned that the guy was Dave Thomas. I guess it's true that you learn something every day. You can't fault him for being a character actor.

Any of the commentaries with Jon Lovitz, Al Jean and Mike Reiss. Especially A Streetcar Named Marge where Lovitz really plays up Al and Mike being gay .

Commentaries where guest stars show up: Stan Lee in "I Am Furious (Yellow)", Mark Hamill in "Mayored to the Mob", the Jon Lovitz commentaries already mentioned, Dave Thomas in "Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment." And any commentary with Conan. You can get some worthwhile info, but also a lot of entertainment value from people that haven't (as I think Selman once said) "done a thousand of these."

I thought more about this and one of, if not THE best commentary has to be for Dead Putting Society. Everyone there clearly hasn't seen it in forever and the levels of giddiness/laughter they get to over several things but mainly how extreme Homer is throughout the episode are wonderful. I laugh every time I listen to that one.

Oh, that I'll grant you, but I grew up reading Marvel and always found Stan an entertaining fellow in his appearances.

And as cringey as it can be listening to the writers gush about him for twenty-two minutes, I found it preferable to listening to the writers gush about themselves for twenty-two minutes. (Seriously, a couple seasons before this point in the series, the commentaries started getting a little too self-congratulatory and thin-skinned to make them worth listening to.)
