stick Holidays of Future Passed, or Eternal Moonshine of The Simpson Mind, or any acclaimed recent episode in the middle of the Season 3-7 episodes next time you watch it and tell me there isn't a noticeable dip in quality. There's your answer.
I don't necessarily think it has declined in quality, but times have changed and maybe so has the content. I personally think that people tie classic episodes of The Simpsons to their own memories or things that may have happened in their own lives, and maybe newer episodes just cannot compete or compare with these older, slightly more special ones.

Yeah, the show is just as funny and fresh like it's been the first 8 seasons, that's why the staff took massive pay cuts to keep the show afloat.
As for your "explanation", all you said is people who like the early 'classic' Simpsons are people who hate change and are crying for their childhood. Uh, no. As much as I love Lisa's Substitute, I know for a fact we'll never see an episode with that tone or level of character depth ever again. Period. I've tried watching TV shows from the 80's and 90's that I used to love and I can't stand them because they're so damn cheesy. IMO, chasing Nostalgia is a massive waste of time and nostalgia has nothing to do with why I think the new episodes of the Simpsons are so damn inferior.
There's a huge difference between liking something that used to be awesome and something that used to be awesome and parades around like it's still awesome with fans who can't tell the difference.

Perhaps--
But I also have another "theory" we're just getting older and starting to depreciate cartoons.
Theyre not having the same impact on us as they were when we were,, say 11.
But then again- the writers these days are nothing compared to those of the classical era.

Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.
