    Running gags that just disappeared?

    Examples?
It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I went on a Simpsons binge recently, so off the top of my head...

The ambiguity of Waylon Smithers' sexual preference
    "Yoink!"
    "____, eh?"
    Homer's lifelong dreams
    Prank calls to Moe
    Barney's belches
Moe hiding stuff in the back of the bar
    Lenny's eye
Crappy films from the past (Usually involving Troy McClure)
    Three Stooges immitations
Bart doing funny voices (also ties in with the above)
Eyes only visible when in the dark
    "Hi everybody!" "Hi Dr Nick!"
"Smithers, who is that ___?" "He's Homer Simpson, sir, one of your ____ from sector 7G."
Mr Burns owing Smithers a coke
"Let's get out of here!" and other variants, while someone is in peril
    "It burns!"
"Hello, I'm Troy McClure. You may remember me from..."
Stuff between the Simpsons floorboards during a pan from floor to floor
    "WHAAAA?!!!"
    Krusty's illiteracy
    Random explosions
    "One last day until retirement."
    Maggie falling down
"Eat my shorts", "Bitchin'!", "Cowabunga!" (Yes, he did say it)
Bart swearing and Marge scolding him for it
    Homer talking to his brain
"I'm Bart Simpson, who the hell are you?"
    "Thank you, come again."
Someone running offscreen and a car engine starting
Marge hiding stuff in her hair
Mr Burns looking at the surveillance monitors
    Homer mispronouncing words
    Lisa writing in her diary
    "Meh"
    Skinner's war stories
Space mutants, happy little elves, mcbain, etc
Thoughts going through people's head ("Hello joe!" "Is there a chance the track could bend?")
Homer threatening and shaking his fist
Calling something and told to hold, while ironic music plays
"Won't somebody please think of the children?!"
    Grampa's rants
Homer throwing books into the fireplace

Hard to imagine all these gags in a HD episode, but it would be nice...

since diversity pumpkin listed all the ones i could think of, i'll just list my favorites that they don't do:

-prank calls to moe (really kinda disappointed they didn't bring this back in lost verizon)

    -homer's lifelong dreams

    -inappropriate hold music

-Troy McClure. You might remember me from (though it's obvious why they stopped this one)

some gags i miss more then others of course, but oh well. now they have new gags! it's just a shame not all of them are you know... good.

Oh, that thing where a character hears the same line over and over in their head. "A part of us all, a part of us all, a part of us all".

Rainier Wolfcastle's latest scene from a movie.

"Now lets go out for frosty chocolate milkshakes" which in addition to being used in early episodes was also used in the Tracey Ullman shorts.

    - Marge's slight perverted streak (which went a long way to explaining her marriage to Homer).

    - Skinner's random mispronunciations.

    - ORANGE DRINK.

    - Chief Wiggum's "that's some good/fine work, boys" proclamation after the Springfield cops do something asinine or inappropriate.

    - Grandpa's letters.
    Dear Advertisers:

I am disgusted with the way old people are depicted on television. We are not all vibrant, fun-loving sex maniacs. Many of us are bitter, resentful individuals who remember the good old days when entertainment was bland and inoffensive. The following is a list of words I never want to hear on television again:

    • Number one: bra.
    • Number two: horny.
    • Number three: family jewels.

    Sincerely,
    Abraham J. Simpson

There were always these little hints that Marge had a bit of a dirty side: her whispered comment to Homer about the Washington Monument, her comment to Lisa in "Lisa The Greek", the entire plotline of "Natural Born Kissers". etc. And let's not forget where Bart was conceived. It just added another dimension to her relationship with Homer.

And I think "orange drink" is self-explanatory.

Basically, whenever there was a Springfield Elementary School pageant of some kind, Principal Skinner would also try and peddle some watered-down "orange drink" to the parents in order to make some extra money for the failing school. The gag didn't last long, but it always made me laugh.

This is a great bit in I Love Lisa, but did it actually appear in any other episode?

New Kids on the Blecch mentions it...

Principal Skinner: No I didn't. I even came in early and made orange drink!
    L. T. Smash: Orange drink? What, do you live with your mama?

A better Skinner running gag is how he used to mispronounce words whenever he was giving a speech. ("And now, Sherbert's...eh, Schubert's Unfinished Symphony...") I think the last time they used it was in "Lisa's Sax".

Actually, they had one of these recently, in S22 Flaming Moe: Burns voice in Smithers' head, "True admiration, self-made man, kill the other two heads…"

    1. What about Lenny's eye, exactly?
    2. How is this a gag?
    3. YES. In fact, there should be more Grampa in general.
