For the sake of variety I tried to put things into categories (jerkass homer, current events, excessive clock-eating, excessive unfunniness, etc.) with 2 episodes apiece, then I whittled it down to 25. I did not include episodes I haven't seen in their entirety (rome-old and juli-eh, almost all of seasons 21 & 22) or episodes I only vaguely remember (principal and pauper, kill the alligator and run). Some terrible episodes were spared by virtue of having at least one great joke (computer wore menace shoes, million dollar maybe)

Thanks for the link. Mr. Murphy, if you want to view why I personally dislike the episode, here's a direct link to my review after watching the Season 12 DVD. My main problem is what was originally an interesting idea in the 2nd act gets escalated so ridiculously into a war from Jerkass Homer that it begins to resemble a Saturday morning cartoon plot.

You know the writers have run out of ideas when they send in a badger to put the episode out of its misery.

'Behind the Laughter' isn't bottom 25 material IMO, but it is an overrated episode.

I'm gonna try and do my bottom 25 soon, but I have quite a few gaps in it, so I'm not going to post it yet.
Also, out of curiosity, when will the top 100 thread be?

Thank you Pinafore. Very well put. Panther, they weren't pulling back the curtain and revealing that the simpsons are actors but rather, they were parodying a popular show with their own characters. It was just an obscure, out-of-the-box episode like spinoff showcase, 22 short films or El Viaje. Either way, I totally respect your opinion but I am a lover of that episode so I wanted to defend it. My list will be coming shortly.

In addition to the examples that Mr. Huffnagel posted, this concept was originally visited in the 138th Episode Spectacular. So if the episode is going to be knocked purely for the concept, then there are several previous episodes that have to be knocked down as well.

Behind the Laughter is all right. It's just kind of a novelty episode for me.

I think what helped me love Behind the Laughter is both that I instantly understood it was a spot on Behind the Music parody(and clearly not canon), and also that I first saw it when I was 11. To this day I hold the episode in high regard, easily the best of Season 11. Homer's "I thought the cop was a prostitute" line is one of my favorite from the entire series. The line delivery and his little nod after saying it seals the deal and kills me every time.

Behind the Laughter is okay... I mean it certainly got some good bits in there but I can't find myself watching that episode as much as I did in the past...

I did really love that Simpsons song that they featured in the episode, the bassline from "Boogie, Oggie, Oggie" just sells the entire thing, as well as the synthesized notes. Why can't they make songs like that anymore?
