Here's a short that Seth made for Cartoon Network in 1997.

I don't have my sound on right now but the animation looks a bit better then his current shows.

It actually looks like it has animation and not just stiff gestures and sterile camera movements made frame to frame. it kind of reminds me of the whole old Marge vs new Marge in the market from the Simpsons intro.

I like the man. Sure, he may seem like a bit of a high-strung douchebag, but overall, he seems like a nice guy all around who can willingly take a jab or 2 at himself (the ending of "It's a Trap", for example), is obviously extremely talented in many things such as Voice Acting, Singing, and whatnot and, well, I think we can all agree that he's a preety cute guy, as well.

    I concur

[Edit not about the cute part and also I'm aware that this is a shameful thread bump to give new NHCers and whoever the chance for more discussion on this fascinating subject]

I couldn't possibly judge how he is as a person, but I think all the hate you see levelled at his shows is a bit overblown. Family Guy has its moments, and I don't think it plagiarises the simpsons at all, besides featuring a nuclear family with an idiot father figure. Its humour always has Family Guy is notorious forhad far more of a surreal bent. The show I think Family Guy is actually closest to is The Young Ones, which even had random cutaway sketches.

American Dad is the best of his shows, being more tightly focused, and it's rare for it to misfire too badly. The Cleveland show's just unwatchable crap, though. I'd take any of them over current Simpsons.

I'm kind of on the fence. The shows are hit and miss for me. As a person, he seems like the sort of guy who'd be fun at a party, but at the same time, he probably wouldn't have a problem with hitting on your girlfriend.

^ Ahahha too right. As a woman I can say I'd love to have him as a buddy but I wouldn't trust or tolerate him as a boyfriend.

christmas_ape, The Young Ones is a really interesting comparison. I agree - the shows are similarly subversive and include a hell load of random cutaways that equally fall completely flat if you don't get the humour. Could even say FG reminds of this because the "dysfunctional family" behaves exactly as thrown together as a group of teenage housemates and they lack emotional attachments to each other accordingly. Spot on!

I love American Dad, dislike Family Guy and hate The Cleveland Show, where does that put me?

You'd accept an invite for a party at his house but wouldn't think twice about taking a shite in his kettle.

he loves one show, dislikes another, hates another. no similarities; he doesn't 'love' two of the shows or dislike two; he 'loves' one of the shows, he dislikes another and he outright hates the last. so he doesn't have a strong opinion on seth because his shows are hit-and-miss

I'd say slight dislike if we're being precise here.
Favourite/least favourite by seasons that I own (somewhat stolen from Financial Panther):

    3 - Dog of Death/When Flanders Failed 4 - Lisa's First Word/So it's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show 5 - Secrets of a Successful Marriage/Bart's Inner Child 6 - And Maggie Makes Three/Another Simpsons Clip Show 7 - Marge Be Not Proud/Bart the Fink 8 - Homer's Phobia/The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase 9 - King of the Hill/Trash of the Titans 10 - Wild Barts Can't Be Broken/Maximum Homerdrive

He's okay. He comes off as an arrogant douche-bag sometimes, though he doesn't actually seem to be.

Oh, here's a previous version of Larry and Steve, made in 95. Many scenes from here made it into the pilot of Family Guy.

I'm actually a little surprised they have lasted this long. Their ratings haven't been that great to begin with and they have gotten worse since they moved out of their 8:30 timeslot.
Jimbo Jones: [about Homer] I hear that guy's ass has it's own congressman!
Bart Simpson: I wash myself with a rag on a stick.
Homer Simpson: [takes cap out of dryer and puts it on his head] Mmmmm... I CAN feel three types of softness.
Lisa Simpson: [from upstairs] Dad, what are you doing down there?
Homer Simpson: Washing my fat guy's hat honey!

    My viewership probably didn't matter.
I'm not the US. I wouldn't have a clue about their timeslot.

Family Guy has grown on me over the last couple years. While it's nothing outstanding, it can actually be very funny in a dumb, sophomoric kind of way. However, MacFarlane's other shows (American Dad, The Cleveland Show, and those shitty webtoons) are complete garbage.

Funny that you say that, because I think Family Guy is complete shit and American Dad is utter brilliance.

I am on meh terms with family guy, sometimes its enjoyable, other times its just irritating.
Cleveland show, by all means is a waste of airtime and production values, on occasion I have laughed at it though.

American Dad is like, my 3rd favourite show of all time behind Beavis and Butthead and The Simpsons, I really like Roger, just how selfish and effeminate he can be is hilarious.
"I just want you to know, when you die I will visit your grave every year and leave a rose...I will once...Il think of you...I wont.."

American Dad just gets a bad rep

Al Jean did some decent work in the 90's, are we still saying he's good?

This is just like saying you're either gay or with America (by the way, that's just trying to prove a point and not a hateful comment against gay people). You just don't either like or hate him, you could like American Dad and hate Family Guy. Seriously this thread!

Holy shit, a 1995 pilot! I prefer Larry and Steve though. Lots of jokes and cutaways made it into the first season of Family Guy it seems. Chris looks almost identical to the Family Guy version. Wonder what it would be like if Family Guy turned out like that! Also I think he acts like a douche on purpose and isn't personally one, I'd act like a douche if it would piss people off.
Everybody's a jerk. You, me, this jerk. That's my philosophy.
