RE: AV Club review grades, it's a mistake to get too upset over them. By the admission of many of the site's writers, the grades themselves are often somewhat arbitrary and not really meant to be thought-out as much as the actual content of the reviews, which is what's important. Basically, there's no real functional difference between an A- and an A, and you should just be using the grades as a general guide for the reviewer feels, not scrutinizing it, because such a small difference in grade is probably just dependent on how the reviewer feels about it at that particular moment. As it is, the AV Club didn't even have grades in their reviews for years, and only added them for reader-ease and because of reader demand.
Um, but anyway. I tried watching this show a couple times in high school, and I know I saw the movie. I wonder if I would appreciate it more now. At the time, I thought the animation was impressive but in all honesty I couldn't really really follow what was going on at all, which is usually a problem for me with Japanese animation.
Two eyes, two ears, a chin, a mouth, ten fingers, two nipples, a butt, two kneecaps, a penis. I've just described to you the Loch Ness Monster. And the reward for its capture? All the riches in Scotland. So I have one question: why are you here?
I really like this show because yeah it's pretty amazing. At the same time I feel like strangling people who auto-suggest this to others getting into anime. It's technically a really good pick, and I realize it deserves its accolades, but goddamn I am so tired of hearing about it.
And Evangelion is definitely great. And I probably do like it much more than Bebop. Maybe that's why I hate hearing about Bebop. I have the entire thing on VHS from so long ago. I could barely comprehend what the fuck was going on in some episodes, and especially the last ones. And 10 year old kupo certainly had no idea what the significance of those odd noises Shinji made over Asuka's lifeless body in EoE meant.
cowboy bebop is the unquestionable sovereign lord of anime and it is not pleased with all of your insubordination
it was the first anime i ever saw and it's still probably my favourite show, so i dunno. maybe not the best thing for getting into anime but i still think everyone should watch it, whether they're interested in anime or not.
Yeah it was nowhere near my first anime. It sort of hadn't done anything I wasn't expecting, but it's still a show to watch regardless. The dub is definitely bearable, too.
How 'bout Vision of Escaflowne? Anyone besides Miss Diko into that?
I never finished the series but I enjoyed what I saw and I liked the movie.
Cowboy Bebop is the cool kid everyone loves that makes it through life just fine, Evangelion is the kid everyone ignores but also makes it through life just fine anyways.
also, this thread needs more forbiddendonut.
"Sleeping Beast"
Great show and all, unfuckwithable.
But Vicious is one of my favorite characters ever.
the second review is up, stray dog strut. pretty good write up for a somewhat boring episode.
For me though even the "boring" episodes of Cowboy Bebop were cool, just for the atmosphere alone. And Hakim was pretty badass but funny at the same time.
If you guys haven't checked it out yet, I'd really recommend the Rebuild of Evangelion movies being released right now (there's two so far). It seems like a simple retelling of the series in movie form, with massively superior animation and production values...but it soon starts to change a lot of small things that in turn accumulate into massive changes. I have no idea where Anno's taking the movies at this point, so I'm pretty excited about it. It's too bad they're taking so long to make and the state of the production's always so vague.
I've seen Escaflowne as well, it's a pretty underrated series. I saw the premier of the movie..which was kinda underwhelming but it was still pretty.
Honestly if it has giant robots in it I've probably seen it, mecha anime's like a guilty pleasure for me.
You see, the good thing is... now that you're getting all of these out of the way, you'll find better series to talk about.
And from there you will realize the impotence of anime and welcome the kingdom of manga.
