Question If "The Simpsons" were to cancel this season...

    What would the Finale be?

I think it should be an homage to all the greatest Series Finales that TV has to offer from "Seinfeld" to "Newhart" (I can see Tracy Ullmann wake-up with one of her star-actors from that show and she's talking about this city of Springfield where the people were yellow).

I think that the series finale should be rather emotional/depressing. Well, no matter how the episode is, I'd probably find it sad anyway...

What I don't want to see is for it to "pull a St. Elsewhere" because a final scene of us discovering the whole series was the imagination of Ralph Wiggum won't cut the mustard.

i want it to have it all- humor, emotion, action, and a satisfying ending. as for plot, i don't really have any idea. i just want it to end in a way that justifies it being on so long.

one of my original wants was to have every single writer write it- writers who left, new writers, people who wrote only one episode of the show. but that would be quite impossible

    allow me to finish.

If "The Simpsons" were to cancel this season...I would be very happy.

Personally I wouldn't want a bunch of writers of writers to write the series finale because too many writers can often spoil the script. They should stick to no more than 4 writers.

I think it's a must that they have an hour long episode. AKA: a two part episode when shown in syndication.

my original intention was to have every single writer. i even wrote down a list of all the writers. i don't remember how many there were, but definitely too many to write one episode. i also felt like it should be a 90 minute tv movie, something where maybe for once, the simpsons go on vacation, and love the place so much, that they decide not to come back to springfield. but now, i dunno

    Rule for the finale:

Lock Mike Scully out of the writers's room and make sure Al Jean is a supporting writer as Oakley and Weinstein are the executive producers.
Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.

i read somewhere that the last scene of the finale would supposedly be a slow zoom out from the simpson house to reveal that they live next to the eiffel tower which is probably the worst possible way to end the show short of bart finally consummating his incestuous lust for aunt patty

A terrible showrunner but tbf Scully is a good writer, he just didn't have the balls or energy to demand enough re-writes from his writers. John Swartzwelder for instance (still a great writer) should never be left to his own devices without supervision

They reveal in final episode that the last 13 years of the show was only one big prank on us.

Final scene: The Simpson family drive out of town in a mack truck filled with cash

It's too late for me to really care anymore probably, but I always sort of liked the idea of the final scene just being the family sitting on the couch watching TV. Finish the show where it's always started.

A "final" Simpsons wouldn't make that much sense anyways. What's there to wrap up? Just do a normal episode but make sure to incorporate most of the characters and put in a few finale in-jokes.
Two eyes, two ears, a chin, a mouth, ten fingers, two nipples, a butt, two kneecaps, a penis. I've just described to you the Loch Ness Monster. And the reward for its capture? All the riches in Scotland. So I have one question: why are you here?

Bart tells the school secretary that him and Lisa are dead, causing Principal Skinner to celebrate and Ms. Pompous to mourn their passing while B&L are at home watching old TV shows from earlier episodes and eating nachos.

I always think of a finale for "The Simpsons" but I can never bring a plot together. I'd think that it should be emotional, cutting-ties, funny, and somewhat touching. The final scene should be something touching, such as the family walking down the street together/watching television on the couch/etc. If they end the show saying that it was all Ralph's imagination and/or God's I'd be pissed to the nth power because that.... I can't even explain it. That would be too horrible for words.

But let's stop talking about it ending that way. Writers read this forum!

They make a full-length version of [MG20] World War III, but it turns out that it was really WW III.

This is why I am staying out of the thread that announces the demise of the show. I can't see why it would make anyone happy. No one is forcing you to watch it, so while it's reasonable to be sad that the show is ending, there is no reason to be happy when you didn't have to watch it in the first place. There are still many people who enjoy watching it, so I do think it's kinda selfish to pray for the show to end.
You can do anything if you put your mind to it.

    Everything happens for a reason.

Just be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.

Don't worry about the world ending today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.

I know nobody is...and I hardly do watch the new ones anymore. The last one I saw was about Cheech and Chong and it was subpar. Admit it, you love this show and will defend it in every way. Why are you in this thread anyway and why did you thumb down my comment? I'm stating my opinion. I didn't tell everyone, "You should ALL be happy if it were to cancel this season!"

Because you said you would be happy if the show was over, and I can't see any reason to be happy, even if you hate the show. Please explain why you would be happy, rather than getting aggressive with me over simply saying that you don't have to watch it if you don't want to.

I thought you were gone from this thread, vanished. Apparently not. Well, it has overstayed it's welcome. They recycle old gags, they reuse old plots, they make up cringe-worthy gags, predictable Homer stuff, it needs to stop. It should be put to sleep like Old Yeller. Painfully. And by the people that housed it. 'Cause it's got rabies, man.

I'm fine with you thinking that, but my point is that you don't have to watch it. If you don't like the show now, then there is no reason to keep watching. There is also no reason to want it to end, since no one is forcing you to watch it.

  27. #27

Yeah, we all have our opinions. BUT. I still want it to end. I'll admit it has its moments, and I do find myself watching some of the (early) post-classic episodes. Hell, some are even enjoyable.

But why do you think it needs to stop? You can stop watching it if you want, which would be the equivalent of the entire show stopping because since it's no longer part of your life, the fact that you don't like it now won't mean anything to you anyway.

BTW, sorry if I'm sounding a bit too harsh. This is not just directed at you, but to the other members who also want the show to end.

It's understandable. For someone who was a longtime fine or who loves the older seasons, it's become kind of embarrassing to watch and kind of embarrassing to say that you're a fan of it, because it's just gotten so mediocre/poor over the years. From that standpoint, it's understandable to want the show to end and stop disgracing the years when it was great. Whenever I talk to someone who's never really seen it, I can't recommend it without adding the caveat that they probably shouldn't watch the last 14+ years of it. That's kind of pathetic.

I mean, at this point I care a lot less about it than I used to. The mediocre seasons outweigh the great ones and have for a while now. It's past the point where ending it would make any difference, and I find the majority of people (that I talk to) who've ever actually watched it agree with me anyway. But it makes sense. It's hard to witness something that you loved or even meant a great deal to you become garbage, and I'm sure even the current Simpsons writers would agree considering the parodies they've done of the newer Star Wars movies a few times. It's sad to witness even if you don't really have to watch it anymore.

That said, I do wonder about the person who's continually watched it over the last 14 years and just hates it every single week. At some point, I'd think that person would give up the ghost already.

I can see your point, but I don't agree with it. There is no reason to be embarassed to be a fan of it. Almost no one who I've talked to knows about the decline and I've showed some of my friends a mixture of episodes from different eras. They couldn't tell a difference. They enjoy watching the show. I can understand, however, if you have had different experiences involving The Simpsons, that you would think that way. I am glad that you brought up people who still watch and hate the show, because if they haven't liked it in 13 years, they probably should stop watching it.
