Thread: Renewed! Zombie Simpsons lives on to 2012

We're close enough to the coveted 25th Anniversary (and all the accompanying possibilities for hype) that I suspect we won't see any genuine discussion about the show finally being brought to an end until after afterwards. And by then, won't they be close enough to the 600th episode milestone to be tempted by that? And at what point will they be close to passing by the Gunsmoke record for most episodes? It's hard to imagine FOX wanting to let that go unchallenged...

Unless the ratings really do plummet completely into the toilet, but I doubt that will happen. The Simpsons still has its fan base, and people who watch it out of a sense of familiarity. It's as cozy as a beloved old blanket or family pet.

Whether or not they hype a 25th anniversary celebration is hard to tell. They did not have any sort of a "15th anniversary celebration". But then again, there was no "150th episode hype" but they did have 250th, 350th, and 450th episode hype.

I did remember Malcolm in the Middle had "150th episode hype" but the only episode to air after that one was the series finale.

The "200th episode hype" of the X-Files reaching that landmark was also the episode right before the series finale.

The 200th episode of That 70's Show doubled as the series finale which meant a double landmark promotion.

Anyway, landmark 100th, 200th, etc. episodes (and also anniversary celebrations) don't always mean more years on the air.

not counting the THOH, the 250th episode was the premiere for s12, so that's probably why it was hyped

Exactly, That is why I wouldn't be surprised if The Simpsons gets a 23 episode season this year just like season 21 did so they could more easily time the landmark episode to air after the Daytona 500 NASCAR race which sounds like a logical choice for that episode number promotion since it involves using the number 500 twice.

God I wish they'd just put the show out if its misery. I guess I can't really consider myself a fan anymore after more or less despising it for ten years now. But sometimes it's still fun to watch in a "how on earth did it come to this?" kind of way.

I can't wait to see how bizarre the final episode is though.

Now I'm really curious to know what they intend to do w/ the voice actors if they keep the attitude that they're not going anywhere. At least Harry Shearer still sounds fine, but Marcia Wallace is starting to sound reeeallly bad, as per another thread discussion...

After the oldest VA's retire, are they slowly going to put those characters into the background, give them less lines, and give them different VA's like they did to Helen Lovejoy? I wonder...

it will be hilarious when shearer retires and they're forced to recast 50% of the recurring characters

if harry had any balls he'd do it

I suspect he doesn't want to be the guy who kills the show and puts a bunch of people out of work

Harry Shearer is the voice actor that has been critical over the decline in quality of recent seasons. I have a feeling that FOX just keeps offering him and the others offers they can't refuse. Maybe he will quit The Simpsons when the current contract no longer requires him to do additional voice work and say "I have plenty of money to retire happily".

yeah, but it would still be epic if he did... I kind of suspect he doesn't want to be doing the show into his 70's, so I think there's a legitimate chance he either quits completely or cuts back significantly in the next few years.

Mel Blanc did voiceovers till he was in his 80's.
Well, ya'know if you stay positive and forget about trivial things like "proper characterization," "Satire," and "emotional depth" watching new Simpsons episodes can be a seemingly enjoyable lie.

Pretty much this. He'd be vilified by some casual fans also for 'killing the show'. My question to them is how can you kill something that is already dead?

According to this person who attended a table reading of the episode NABF20 The Food Wife, Harry Shearer wasn't attending the table reads. He was being represented by a speaker phone in the middle of the table. Nowadays he rarely attends them or even the recording sessions and mostly does his voice work over the phone from home.

Could it be that Harry Shearer wants out of The Simpsons? I grew a little suspicious since he declined to do voice work for The Simpsons Ride.

Hell, if I could do my job without having to leave my house, I'd do it.

My first guess as to what their last season might be was season 23 since they would hit episode 500. After that, I would guess season 25 because of the number. They would need to get to 635 (I think) to beat Gunsmoke for episodes and that would take them to around, what, season 30? If Al Jean gets his way...

If The Simpsons airs the usual amount of 22 episodes each season, it will overtake Gunsmoke during season 29 since by the end of the 29th season, it will have 640 episodes. If the ratings keep having a steady decline, I don't think it will make it.

Since the voice actors have demanded big pay raises in 1998, 2004, and 2008, I am 100% sure they will refuse pay cuts for additional seasons. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if they demand 1 million per episode for season 24, 25, etc.

The writers should make an episode where they don't use the voice actors in which the episode is done like an old silent movie.

Yikes. IF the Simpsons lasted that long, it'd be the best worst show in TV history.

Yeah, if they manage to keep the show on the air for 30 years I would be extremely impressed.

I really hope Season 23 is the end and they give it a proper ending. It can't go on for much longer.

No, I'm guessing it'll get renewed for Season 24 due to the praise Season 23 will be getting. (Hint: They're drinking the kool-aid. If all a comedy series have to do is make a person laugh then what's the point of innovative comedy.) If The Simpsons can be lazy and get praise then what's the point?

Oh, I'm 99% sure it will be renewed, but I can dream.

I don't want the Simpsons to be canceled. I want the show to suddenly improve into a second golden era. Then the show can go on for another 20 years.

But this will probably not happen.

    There for cancel it.
