recommended non-pixar cgi animated movies

We all know the pixar line-up is overall quality.
But outside the installments of that high-regarded studio, which cgi animated movies are also worth owning?

There isn't many most other CGI movies have the same plots (Main character feels left out, falls in love, Goes on an adventure, returns as a hero)

i really liked bolt. it's pretty derivative of toy story but it's fun and the animation was great

I'll second shrek, but only the first one. shrek 2 maybe, but definitely no further than that.

Also, kung fu panda, and princess and the frog (disney, but not pixar).

How To Train Your Dragon is wonderful and probably Dreamworks' best. Also, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (by the Clone High guys) turned out surprisingly hilarious. Both are worth checking out, if you ask me.

I really enjoyed Kung Fu Panda and Monsters vs. Aliens. I haven't seen How to Train your Dragon but I heard it's excellent.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is great, probably the best non-Pixar cg movie in a long time. Other than that, all I can think of that is really worth recommending would be Monster House from a few years back. I liked that one quite a bit.

Yeah, Shrek is good, and I didn't mind Shrek 2 as much as I could've. How to Train Your Dragon is one I really want to see, heard nothing but positive thoughts on it. One I personally like (depending on whether you watch the original French film vs. NA/UK edited film) is Arthur et les Minimoys. May not catch your fancy as much as it did mine. I like whimsical little stories, though.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is one of my favorite CGI films. So pretty and colorful and delicious and funny. I recommend that to anyone.

I also really really love Monster House, it's personally my favorite of the "performance capture" movies. Ironically it's also the only one not directed by Robert Zemeckis; he was just a producer. It was really good though, it has a very dark and eerie atmosphere and is really funny too. Hell even the video game based on it was half decent.



Has anyone else ever run into a person who refers to ANY CGI-animated film as a "Pixar film"? A friend of mine was telling me about some Dreamworks movie and calling it a Pixar movie and I was like There is a difference.

I'll second Cloudy. Easily one of the funniest non-pixar animated films. I also thought the first (and only the first) Ice Age was very hilarious and enjoyable

Cloudy, Panda and Dragon have been mentioned, I'd like to add Surf's Up, Over The Hedge and Bee Movie, lots of fun in them.

If you think they suck, well, maybe Ratatoing is for you.

Am I allowed to say Wallace & Gromit and Chicken Run? They're not technically CGI but they're not traditional animation either, and they're both masterpieces.

Horton Hears a Who is the best of the Dr. Seuss movies. No overly crude jokes, and no complicated story devices like the live-action features. The only slight problem was Jim Carrey's casting as Horton. Not really a good match.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meetballs was a pleasant surprise. Nothing less was expected from the creators of Clone High.

Monsters vs. Aliens was a rare hit from DreamWorks. Or maybe because it was the first DreamWorks feature I've seen beyond the first three Shreks.

I put off looking at How to Train Your Dragon when DW got carried away with success again. But Chris Sanders worked on it, so...

Chicken Little was actually good, despite its less favorable place in modern cartoon history. It proved during a time Disney was having trouble keeping up with the Joneses that they were at least still capable of making decent animated films.

Bolt was fine, but the more I hear about American Dog, the more I wish that was made instead.

Rapunzel (or um, Tangled) is looking interesting.

I'm just gunna add Monster House and Over the Hedge to my list. Both pretty enjoyable but two that never really spring to mind (as evident by the thread).

And yes, W&G and Chicken Run are also great but aren't CGI so shouldn't really count. Still deserve a mention.

I really liked this movie too, I thought it was really well done despite a couple of lame pop-culture gags ("WhoSpace"? Really?). But I loved it, the music and all.

I liked Igor. It's different.. Although it was a little bit tiring for me near the end. But it had some good jokes and black humor.

Steve Buscemi voicing a suicidal immortal rabbit is something to see!
