    Springfield Elementary

This has been bugging me for some time now.

Lisa and Bart are second and fourth graders at an elementary school. Yet at times, it shows that the kids are in a middle school because there is a bell which may signify the end of one class and they are shown roaming the halls midday.

I am confused. Perhaps discussion on the subject will cause me to make more sense of it. Thank you.

Kearney who has a Son, is still illegible to attend Springfield Elementary so God knows what's going on there.

Closest excuse I can give is recess, which could explain a bell and hall roaming. However, I'm overly familiar with the US elementary school system, and I didn't attend school so I can't draw personal comparisons.

It's called broadening the satire of school systems in general so the writers have more freedom to keep the show relatable to older audiences considering the kids don't age. It's not a mistake by any means or even a cheat because the whole concept that it's an elementary school is not meant to be taken so literally. It's stretching some boundaries when compared to the reality of your average elementary school system, but it's not something to be bothered by.

There is a lot of characteristics of Springfield Elementery that resemble middle and high school anyway.

"Homer vs Patty and Selma" features "P.E. sign up" as part of the sub-plot. Most elementery schools at least in America don't have this. All students in the same class attend P.E. together. In fact, at my high school, we didn't have the option of choosing our P.E. classes until the 11th grade.

P.E. classes in the gymnasium constantly features students in gym uniforms which suggests that there are locker rooms at the school and we see one in the episode Wild Barts Can't Be Broken and there is also communal showers in there as well. That could also mean there could be an "everyone must shower" policy at the school even though the rule nowadays is often regarded as outdated.

There are also suggestions that the school teaches middle and high school elective classes too:

"Lisa on Ice" suggests the school teaches Home Economics (Nelson does quite well in it)

"Lisa gets an A" suggests the school has shop class (Bart substitutes a wooden dummy for himself that he made in the class)

Seymour Skinner does what he wants, when he wants (unless someone tells him not to).

Yeah, I never really paid much attention to this, but now that you bring it up, it is odd. It still doesn't really bother me, though.
Favourite/least favourite by seasons that I own (somewhat stolen from Financial Panther):

    3 - Dog of Death/When Flanders Failed 4 - Lisa's First Word/So it's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show 5 - Secrets of a Successful Marriage/Bart's Inner Child 6 - And Maggie Makes Three/Another Simpsons Clip Show 7 - Marge Be Not Proud/Bart the Fink 8 - Homer's Phobia/The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase 9 - King of the Hill/Trash of the Titans 10 - Wild Barts Can't Be Broken/Maximum Homerdrive

My elementary school had bells. And that was back in the 60's, so there is some precedence for them.

Anyway, British schools make more sense. 3-11 yrs in Primary School, 11-18 in Secondary. Simples.

No. British school system is fucked aswell. In England it's as you described it but in Leicestershire (but not in the city of Leicester) it is 4-11 then 11-14 followed by 14-18. No consistency.
