Alright then, two main with occasional third.
Let's stray away from archetypes (or "the" characters, like "the smart one" "the dumb one", "the girl", "the kid", "the awkward guy", etc.) It can work sometimes, but it can lead to characters being one-dimensional. If we have an awkward character, it shouldn't be that every time we come up with an awkward situation or someone acting awkward it should immediately be written to that character. In other words, no "go-to" guys as far as plots and jokes go. Try them out with each character in your head and think who would lead to the funniest reaction/results.
edit: yeah I'm a guy. my avatar has a boner pencil in it dude

We should have an emanuelburnell type character. Someone who says something and then immediately contradicts himself. At least once in a while
Edit: nevermind, HappyPalooza doesn't think it would work. oh well
VA auditions should come after we've worked out the character personalities, so we can find a voice that fits the character.

I was thinking the characters would be like the lowest common denominator of the middle class. Two high school drop outs working at a video store. Everybody hates them, but they think they're cool. Something like that.

What's the age of these characters going to be? Teens, middle aged, twenty somethings? I think we should go with characters of all age groups, but we need an age of the main characters.

Well if the character is a popular, charismatic lawyer or politician filling his speeches with holes, fallacious logic, and contradictions in almost-Colbert deadpan manner it could work.

One thing we should avoid is creating a character like the Fonz. I mean one that overshadows other characters, and makes viewers become bored with the other cast.

So the ideas for the set-up so far are:
People who work on a small animated sitcom
People surviving in post-apocolyptia
People running a cult
Gay people
Guys living on the side of a highway/small apartment
High school dropouts working in a videogame store
and no families

Oh my God, they totally ruined that show in the final seasons. It sucks. We must never do outlandish things like that for ONE character.
If I ever made a show {cough Robot Richard cough}, and there was ONE character way more popular then others, I wouldn't want the show to continue. I mean, it would demean everything I had worked so hard for, especially for all the other characters, it wouldn't be what I had envisioned for my show
