Do you think there's any chance someone will open Season 14 DVD thread to discuss packaging, commentaries, news?

I finally finished the season. I've had it since the day it came out but I've been watching them really slowly. This season is pretty good and it's actually pretty close to what I would consider classic. The weakest episode is almost certainly Lastest Gun in the West, but overall there are a lot of episodes I would give A's to, especially in the last half. Blame it On Lisa, Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge, Little Girl in the Big 10, Frying game... I'd almost consider these to be classics. This is probably the closest 'post-classic' season I'd almost consider to be a classic, because I know right now I would not consider 18+ classics, and I probably wouldn't 16 or 17 either... as for 14 and 15, I don't have much of an opinion on those seasons until I see them in their entirety. But s13 was good. The first half of episodes wasn't that good, but the second half almost entirely makes up for it. I think I'd give the entire last half A's, with maybe one or two exceptions. As for the boxset itself, pretty cool. I like the theme being video games (Even though I myself am not an avid video gamer). The menus look kind of blurry though, is it because it is also on Blu Ray or is it just the way it is? like it looks really blurry to me. The packaging is nice, as usual, even though I'm still not a fan of the way the discs are in, I can still place them somewhere else. Jean's first season as showrunner (even though some of the earlier episodes were Scully) was pretty good and I eagerly await further news of s14 (as of now all we have is the box might be Sideshow Bob, which isn't 100 percent positive I don't think so)

So again, they did reference the negativity of online reactions in the audiocommentary.
One of the speakers even said he tried to avoid places like this one because it is so filled with hate.

They reference it a bit in general, but I don't think there was too much about specific moments/episodes in season 13.

Jean talks about the Lastest Gun in the West being strongly disliked for reasons unknown to him. While it's not particularly interesting, I agree that the hate is unfounded given so much else that slid by before and after. Generally though, I don't think that many of Jean's season 13 episodes have particular notoriety. Scully's episodes are weak, but they don't seem to get the coverage of the blunders from 10-12.

Should be getting S13 in a couple weeks, but just want to say after buying S12 cheap today:

"Shut the fuck up, Marge" was worth the price of the box set alone. I've listened to it over and over and over and it still makes me cry with laughter.

I don't like all those court-episodes in this season. It doesn't end: The Parent Rap, Brawl in the Family, the Frying Game...
It's missing any form of court-satire that made episodes like 'The Boy that Knew Too Much' and 'The Day the Violence Died' so appealing.
And Gil as a lawyer just doesn't work.

I never really thought about that. There really are a lot of episodes that have a courtroom involved. A lot more than usual. I never would've noticed.

I live in the UK and I'm gonna order the blu ray import from the US over Amazon. I've checked on a few websites and it says it's region free which means it should play on my PS3, just wondering if anyone in the UK can confirm that?

Definitely my favorite season set so far. Great extras and deleted scenes. Superb commentaries (a serious improvement over Mike Scully's).

I absolutely loved the Ralph theme in the menus. Great to finally see a new design, after 8 seasons in a row with the same structure. And it worked, for the most part.

It was great to have the likes of James Lipton and Stan Lee participate in these tracks. Al Jean, David Silverman and Matt Groening are always in top form. Matt Selman overbearing as always. Lots of Tim Long, Carolyn Omine, John Frink and Don Payne. I only missed the animation directors this time around, but having Mike B. Anderson and Lauren MacMullan more than make up for it (I've yet to see Steven Dean Moore miss a commentary).

And the mood during the sessions was great. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. Surprisingly good tidbits from Deb Lacusta also. I didn't know about the Tracey Ullman details.

And it really paid off getting it on Blu-Ray. Everything looks much better (aside from some annoying line and shadow effects on a few episodes, as well as some pixelated frames). Overall, the old style animation still looks pretty good in 1080p, even the Gump Roast clips looked good. The sound is also improved. Great to have a DTS 5.1 Master Audio track at last.

And I just discovered Al and Joe Mantegna gave away the character of Fit Tony months in advance (this was released in august, four months before the episode).

what's with Al Jean thinking he needs to fill dead audio commentary air with jokes?

Al Jean always seem to control the tempo of commentaries, and I think he does a great job

I know it's a bit late, but yes it is region free. I got my copy from Amazon when it was first released and it plays in both my PS3 and standalone Blu-ray player.

Been working my way through it after finally finishing S12, and I love it. S13 has so many brilliant episodes, and the commentaries have been great so far. Just like how I felt with the previous showrunner transitions, I'm going to miss Mike Scully's commentaries - he's really funny and comes across as a really nice guy. Listening to the commentaries on seasons 9-12 has made me appreciate the episodes a lot more (not that I ever thought they were bad to begin with).

For me, S13-16 was an almost flawless run of great episodes, so I'm eagerly awaiting the next box sets.

Well that's like if you listen to the commentary for Flaming Moe's, he actually mentions turning Moe's into a gay bar. Not actually saying that it would be a future plot idea like he did with the Fit/Fat Tony thing, but mentions it. Then I think it's funny how he mentioned something else and said, "If we would have done that, then it would look like we ran out of ideas." That's the thing Al, ya have. It's interesting listening to those old commentaries and you'll actually find a number of jokes for plot ideas in the commentaries turned out to be actual episodes in the past few seasons, or are just now turning out to be future episodes.

The commentary for Brawl in the Family is definitely one of the best so far. Delroy Lndo asks so many great questions and it makes for a really interesting discussion about the producers and viewership and history of the show. Having an outsider genuinely interested in the show like that is great for these commentaries, they often ask questions that the regular staff don't think of.

my biggest complaint with the DVD was that the extras seemed like such filler. the two Ralph segments were basically the same thing and then the two clips that just used the audio commentary sound bites. jean's comments on the deleted scenes were total wastes of time as well

but generally, the audio comms were as good as ever

Not to mention there were no 'A Bit from the Animators' segments. They were always my favourite extras, I hope they return for S14

Also, I liked seeing the sketches, but I had to watch them on mute because the looped saxophone music started to drive me insane. Here's a tip: if you have 7+ minutes of sketches to show, use a longer track as BGM, don't use a 30-second clip and then loop it twelve times! The 'Land of Chocolate' music would have worked better there, it was designed to be BGM in the first place.

haha yes that did get a little aggravating.

was kinda weird that they did Brand New Badge as the first commentary when its the season finale. comments like Jean's "i'm going to talk in a deep voice" for this whole season didn't really work

  27. #1497

They spend the whole damn commentaries going on and on about how great the guest star was in EVERY damn one.
